  • Exhaust manifold is a very important component that is directly connected to air environment pollution and that requires strict mechanical properties such as high temperature fatigue and oxidation. Among stainless steels, the ferritic stainless steel with body-centered cubic structure shows excellent resistance of stress-corrosion cracking, ferromagnetic at room temperature, very excellent cold workability and may not be enhanced by heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics of four cast ferritic stainless steels which are high heat-resistant materials, were analyzed. By comparing and evaluating the mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature in a range of 400℃~800℃, a database was established to control and predict the required properties and the mechanical properties of the final product. The precipitates of cast ferritic stainless steels were analyzed and the high-temperature deformation characteristics were evaluated by comparative analysis of hardness and tensile characteristics of four steels at room temperature and from 400℃ to 800℃.

  • The use of ion exchange resins to remove ionic impurities from solution is prevalent in industrial process systems, including in the primary heat transport system (PHTS) purification circuit of nuclear power plants. Despite its extensive use in the nuclear industry, our general understanding of ion exchange cannot fully explain the complex chemistry in ion exchange beds, particularly when operated at or near their saturation limit. This work investigates the behaviour of mixed-bed ion exchange resin, saturated with species representative of corrosion products in a CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactor PHTS, particularly with respect to iron chemistry in the resin bed and the removal of lithium ions from solution. Experiments were performed under deaerated conditions, analogous to normal PHTS operation. The results show interesting iron chemistry, suggesting the hydrolysis of cation resin bound ferrous species and the subsequent formation of either a solid hydrolysis product or the soluble, anionic Fe(OH)3-.

  • Buddhist image engraved on the bronze mirror in the Goryo period were conserved in 1986 and 1996, respectively. As the time passed, re-conservation was required that powdered copper corrosion product on the mirror image occurred. Accordingly, additional conservation including stabilization and consolidation were carried out to prevent further corrosion. The powder filled in the line of the buddhist image and the chasing techniques were examined using microscope and portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer. The result showed that composition of powder were gold, silver and calcium(calcite or gypsum). The main chasing techniques used to engrave pattern seemed to be dotted-line, hairline and the kicking-line engraving.

  • The practices of the construction and management of the petroleum and hazardous chemical compound storage facilities in Korea were investigated extensively, and the problems were identified. The advanced technologies in the U.S.A were comparatively studied. Considering the effectiveness of leak prevention and applicability, the following measures were suggested. To prevent corrosion of a tank, a clad tank, an interior lining tank, or a double-wall tank were thought to be the most cost effective. For piping. use of non-metalic materials was suggested. A catchment basin seemed to be effective for preventing spills. For monitoring of leaks, constructions of more than one of detection systems, such as an automatic leak detection device. a vapor detection system, a groundwater monitoring system, or a double-wall monitoring system, were recommended.

  • High temperature oxidation of Fe-19Cr and Fe-19Cr-0.2Ti alloys is studied at 1173-1373 K in 16.5 kPa $O_2$ - balances $N_2$ atmosphere aimed at clarifying the effect of titanium addition. Oxidation rate of Fe-19Cr alloy was accelerated with titanium. For both alloys chromium rich $(Fe,\;Cr)_2O_3$ was formed as a major oxidation product. On Fe-19Cr-0.2Ti alloy, a thin layer composed of spinel type oxide and titanium oxide was also formed and an internal oxidation of titanium was observed. Titanium was concentrated at the oxide surface and internal oxidation zone but a small amount of titanium was also found in the intermediate corundum type $(Fe,\;Cr)_2O_3$ layer. Crystals of corundum type $(Fe,\;Cr)_2O_3$ formed on Fe-19Cr alloy are coarse but that formed on Fe-19Cr -0.2Ti alloys were fine and columnar. Reason for the difference in oxidation kinetics and crystal structure will be discussed relating to the distribution of aliovalent titanium in corundum type $(Fe,\;Cr)_2O_3$ oxide layer.

  • Manure compost is a main product from animal wastes in Korea. Solid manure is usually treated by aerobic composting at manure composting facilities for land reinforcement. Agricultural use of manure compost as organic fertilizer resources, mainly manure compost, is now recommended in Korea. This study investigated the evaluation of durability about the manure composting machinery and structures which was controlled by aeration and periodic agitating. The questionnaire addressed three main topics as follows: operating practices, machinery and maintenance of the manure composting facilities are being operated. A total of the 22 manure composting facilities in an agricultural cooperative were surveyed. The results obtained in this survey were summarized as follow: The major causes of manure composting apparatus trouble were corrosion and wear, overloading and foreign matter etc. The highly trouble frequency of the agitator, packer and conveyor were chain, agitating blade and shaft, motor and screw vane, respectively. These analytical results can be used as basic information to establish the maintenance control methods and durability standard of manure composting facility.

  • This study examines the damage to the submarine's escape trunk hatch spring through microstructure analysis. The cause of the escape trunk's damage during the submarine's construction and its improvement measures were reviewed. To determine the cause of breakage of the escape trunk spring, samples were taken from the damaged product and analyzed for chemical composition, hardness, and microstructure. In particular, the breakage part of the spring was analyzed in-depth by using a scanning electron microscope to determine the cause of corrosion destruction. Finally, a spring shape design method was proposed through the investigation of the cause of spring breakage. In addition, a newly improved spring was produced by applying a nylon coating with excellent corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance. Applying to an actual submarine trunk hatch revealed that the coating peeling phenomenon due to the contact between the springs is significantly improved when the hatch is opened or closed compared to the existing products.

  • In the flux used in the batch galvanizing process, the effect of the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 on the microstructure, coating adhesion, and corrosion resistance of Zn-Mg-Al ternary alloy-coated steel is evaluated. Many defects such as cracks and bare spots are formed inside the Zn-Mg-Al coating layer during treatment with the flux composition generally used for Zn coating. Deterioration of the coating property is due to the formation of AlClx mixture generated by the reaction of Al element and chloride in the flux. The coatability of the Zn-Mg-Al alloy coating is improved by increasing the content of ZnCl2 in the flux to reduce the amount of chlorine reacting with Al while maintaining the flux effect and the coating adhesion is improved as the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 decreases. Zn-Mg-Al alloy-coated steel products treated with the optimized flux composition of NH4Cl·3ZnCl2 show superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-coated steel products, even with a coating weight of 60 %.

  • In the powder bed fusion (PBF) process, a 3D shape is formed by the continuous stacking of very fine powder layers using computer-aided design (CAD) modeling data, following which laser irradiation can be used to fuse the layers forming the desired product. In this method, the main process parameters for manufacturing the desired 3D products are laser power, laser speed, powder form, powder size, laminated thickness, and laser diameter. Stainless steel (STS) 316L exhibits excellent strength at high temperatures, and is also corrosion resistant. Due to this, it is widely used in various additive manufacturing processes, and in the production of corrosion-resistant components with complicated shapes. In this study, rectangular specimens have been manufactured using STS 316L powder via the PBF process. Further, the effect of heat treatment at 800 ℃ on the microstructure and hardness has been investigated.

  • Ceramic materials have excellent material properties such as stability at high temperatures, chemical stability, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, so they are applicable even in extreme environments of high temperature and pressure. In particular, silicon carbide can be applied in the field of structural ceramics due to its characteristics of high strength, hardness, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance even at high temperatures. In this study, considering the application of silicon carbide materials to next-generation turbines, silicon carbide materials were manufactured using a liquid phase sintering method. When manufacturing liquid phase sintered silicon carbide, sintering additives were added to lower the sintering temperature and densify the material. In Al2O3-SiO2, it was confirmed that the secondary product of the sintering additive was observed as a slightly dark area and was evenly distributed overall, and the fracture surface of Al2O3-SiO2 was in the form of transgranular fracture in which cracks progressed along the crystal plane, and the flexural strength for Al2O3-SiO2 was about 445.6 MPa.
