Comparison of Quantitative Analysis of Radioactive Corrosion Products Using an EPMA and X-ray Image Mapping

  • Radioactive corrosion product specimens were analyzed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray image mapping. It is difficult to analyze the composition of radioactive corrosion products using an EPMA due to the size and rough shape of the surfaces. It is particularly challenging to analyze the composition of radioactive corrosion products in the form of piled up, small grains. However, useful results can be derived by applying a semi-quantitative analysis method using an EPMA with X-ray images. A standard-less, semi-quantitative method for wavelength dispersive spectrometry. EPMA analysis was developed with the objective of simplifying the analytical procedure required. In this study, we verified the reasonable theory of semi-quantitative analysis and observed the semi-quantitative results using a sample with a good surface condition. Based on the validated results, we analyzed highly rough-surface radioactive corrosion products and assessed their composition. Finally, the usefulness of the semi-quantitative analysis was reviewed by verifying the results of the analysis of radioactive corrosion products collected from spent nuclear fuel rods.

  • Factors affecting corrosion of stainless steels such as pH, oxidation and redox potential (ORP), soil resistivity, water content of soil, chloride ion concentration, bacteria activity, and corrosion potential have been investigated using soil analysis, bacterial analysis, surfacial analysis, and analysis of corrosion potentials of several stainless steels buried in 8 sites of Seoul metropolitan for one year. Corrosion potential was affected by occurrance of corrosion as well as bacteria activity but the behavior of corrosion potential with time is different depending on occurrance of corrosion and bacteria activity. The main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in soil is level of chloride ion concentration which is also a main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in chloride containing drinkable water. Furthermore, guideline of stainless steels in drinkable water is concluded to be applicable to that in soil by the results from surfacial analysis.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of non-uniform corrosion distribution on the analysis of concrete cover failure. A series of experiments have been undertaken to measure the corrosion rate of reinforcement according to the concentration of chloride ion so as to suggest a relationship between the reinforcement corrosion rate and chloride ion density. The corrosion induced pressure depending on the density of chloride ion has been derived. And nonlinear analysis assuming nonlinear corrosion distribution for cover cracking was achieved and compared with other experimental results to verify the accuracy of the model. Analysis was also performed for various parameters to compare their effects.

  • Corrosion detection and analysis is a very important topic in reducing costs and preventing disasters. Recently, image processing techniques have been widely applied to corrosion identification and analysis. In this work, we briefly introduces traditional image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms applied to detect or analyze corrosion in various fields. Recently, machine learning, especially CNN-based algorithms, have been widely applied to corrosion detection. Additionally, research on applying machine learning to region segmentation is very actively underway. The corrosion is reddish and brown in color and has a very irregular shape, so a combination of techniques that consider color and texture, various mathematical techniques, and machine learning algorithms are used to detect and analyze corrosion. We present examples of the application of traditional image processing techniques and machine learning to corrosion detection and analysis.

  • The research trend in the corrosion behaviour of stainless steel weldment has been reviewed. The welding technology plays an important role in the fabrication of structure such as chemical plant, power plant, because welding can influence various factors in the performance of plant and equipment. This has led to an increasing attention towards the corrosion behaviour of weldment which has been one of the major issues for both welding and corrosion research engineers. The aim of this paper is to give a short survey of the recent technical trends of welding and corrosion including the electrochemical corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion fatigue in connection with the welding materials, welding process, and welding fabrication. This study covers the corrosion behaviour of stainless steel weldment collected from the COMPENDEX DB analysis of published papers, research subject and research institutes.

Effect of Flow Rate on Erosion Corrosion Damage and Damage Mechanism of Al5083-H321 Aluminum Alloy in Seawater Environment (해수 환경에서 Al5083-H321 알루미늄 합금의 침식부식 손상에 미치는 유속의 영향과 손상 메카니즘)

  • In this study, erosion tests and erosion-corrosion tests of Al5083-H321 aluminum alloy were conducted at various flow rates in seawater. The erosion tests were conducted at a flow rate of 0 to 20 m/s, and erosion-corrosion tests were performed by potentiodynamic polarization method at the same flow rate. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion test was conducted by surface analysis. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion-corrosion test was performed by Tafel extrapolation and surface analysis. The results of the surface analysis after the erosion test showed that surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. In particular, intermetallic particles were separated due to the breakdown of the oxide film at 10 m/s or more. In the erosion-corrosion test, the corrosion current density increased as the flow rate increased. Additionally, the surface analysis showed that surface damage occurred in a vortex shape and the width of the surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. Moreover, damage at 0 m/s, proceeded in a depth direction due to the growth of pitting corrosion, and the damaged area tended to increase due to acceleration of the intermetallic particle loss by the fluid impact.

  • Safety operation of main pipelines is primarily provided by anticorrosive monitoring. Anticorrosive monitoring of oil pipeline transportation objects is based on results of complex corrosion inspections, analysis of basic data including design data, definition of a corrosion residual rate and diagnostic of general equipment's technical condition. All the abovementioned arrangements are regulated by normative documents. For diagnostics of corrosion-technical condition of oil pipeline transportation objects one presently uses different methods such as in-line inspection using devices with ultrasonic, magnetic or another detector, acoustic-emission diagnostics, electrometric survey, general external corrosion diagnostics and cameral processing of obtained data. Results of a complex of diagnostics give a possibility: $\cdot$ to arrange a pipeline's sectors according to a degree of corrosion danger; $\cdot$ to check up true condition of pipeline's metal; $\cdot$ to estimate technical condition and working ability of a system of anticorrosive protection. However such a control of corrosion technical condition of a main pipeline creates the appearance of estimation of a true degree of protection of an object if values of protective potential with resistive component are taken into consideration only. So in addition to corrosive technical diagnostics one must define a true residual corrosion rate taking into account protective action of electrochemical protection and true protection of a pipeline one must at times. Realized anticorrosive monitoring enables to take a reasonable decision about further operation of objects according to objects' residual life, variation of operation parameters, repair and dismantlement of objects.

Comparative analysis of modeling approaches for sulfide-induced corrosion of copper disposal canisters in a 3-dimensional domain

  • Copper canisters are commonly employed to contain HLW for the long-term, making it crucial to understand how corrosion affects the canister. This study conducted a comparative analysis of two widely used calculation methods for modeling canister corrosion within a 3-D DGR domain. The first method, termed transport-limited corrosion, assumes an immediate sulfide-copper reaction and has been traditionally used due to its conservative nature. The second method, known as the potential-limited corrosion, considers coupled redox reactions at the canister surface and computes corrosion rates through anodic current density. From the results, we found that the edge of the canister geometry and the omission of electrochemical kinetics impose critical limitations with the transport-limited corrosion method. These limitations include the singularity problem, excessive sensitivity to the curvature of the canister's edge, and an inability to evaluate the distribution of corrosion rate over the canister surface as a function of the sulfide concentration. On the other hand, the potential-limited corrosion method avoided the limitations found in the other method. Since the factors relating to these limitations are critical to the design and optimization of the copper disposal canister, careful consideration when selecting appropriate calculation methods for corrosion will be required.

  • The corrosion failure analysis for the heating pipeline of apartment was performed. Usually, the heating pipe was layed in the concrete. However, it was known that the corrosion problems could be induced by admixture containing chlorine such as set accelerant. antifreezer and so on. Therefore the new construction method using stone ash instead of concrete was attempt to solve these problems. However water leaking accidents by corrosion occurred after 1 month from the completion of the apartment. In this paper, the reason of corrosion failure was investigated by the field study and laboratory analysis in many aspects.

Design Considerations to Enhance Perforation Corrosion and Life Prediction of Automotive Body Panel

  • The corrosion forms of automotive body panels are various. One of the representations is a corrosion pitting and its propagation on the lapped portion by galvanic corrosion. But it has been difficult in correlation analysis about the corrosion propagation rate and mechanism of pitting and the actual automotive body in field. This present study interprets experimentally the rust pitting occurrence mechanism on the lapped panels through experimental methods. And field car investigation was executed for correlation analysis with experimental results. This paper compares corrosion propagation rate by pitting on hot-dip galvannealed steel sheets with corrosion forms in the automotive field condition. The research fundamentals which make it possible to predict the pitting occurrence and propagation on the lapped panels in the actual vehicles are given.
