  • With the advent of lean-six sigma era, an extensive use of analytic tools such as control charts is required in the field of manufacturing. In relation to statistical quality control (SQC) or process control (SPC), the Korean standards have undergone a meaningful change. In this study, the theoretic backgrounds for evaluating the control limits in connection with the variable control charts are examined in view of better understanding the related constants and coefficients. This paper is intended to help the quality control practitioners understand the mathematical backgrounds by comparing related quality control constants and also to encourage them to make use of and to take the advantage of the variable control charts which are very useful for implementing the concept of lean-six sigma in many industrial sites.

  • In this paper, we consider the control charts applicable to monitoring the change of the population mean for sequentially observed individual data. The most representative control charts are Shewhart's individual control chart, the exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart, and their combined control chart. We compare their performance based on a simulation study, and also, through real data analysis, we present how to apply control charts in practical application and investigate the problems of each control chart.

  • A control chart is very useful in monitoring various production process. There are many situations in which the simultaneous control of two or more related quality variables is necessary. When the joint distribution of the process variables is multivariate normal, multivariate Shewhart control charts using the function of the maximum likelihood estimator for monitoring the dispersion matrix are considered for the simultaneous monitoring of the dispersion matrix. The performances of the multivariate Shewhart control charts based on the proposed control statistic are evaluated in term of average run length (ARL). The performance is investigated in three cases, where the variances, covariances, and variances and covariances are changed respectively. The numerical results show that the performances of the proposed multivariate Shewhart control charts are not better than the control charts using the trace of the covariance matrix in the Jeong and Cho (2012) in terms of the ARLs.

  • Control chart is most widely used in SPC(Statistical Process Control), Recently it is a critical issue that the standard control chart is not suitable to non-normal process with very small percent defective. Especially, this problem causes serious errors in the reliability procurement, such as semiconductor, high-precision machining and chemical process etc. Procuring process control technique for non-normal process with very small percent defective and perturbation is becoming urgent. Control chart technique in non-normal distribution become very important issue. In this paper, we investigate on research trend of control charts under non-normal distribution with very small percent defective and perturbation, and propose some variable-transformation methods applicable to CUSUM control charts in non-normal process.

  • During the past two decades, a huge amount of research on adaptive control charts has been accomplished. Especially, variable sampling interval (VSI), variable sample size (VSS), and variable sample size and sampling interval (VSSI) charts have been focused by many researchers due to their simplicity and efficiency. On the other hand, the difference among notations, assumptions, methodologies may cause confusions in per forming further studies or practical implementations. This research analyses and compares diverse models so as to provide a unified view on statistical and economical characteristics. As a result, we perform comparative study on economical design models of VSI, VSS, and VSSI charts, respectively, We also present practical guidelines to utilize those adaptive control charts.

  • A model for the economic design of an pn control charts with an assignale cause is presented and the loss-cost function for control schemes using these charts is derived. By minimizing this function with respect to the three control variables, namely, the sample size, the sampling interval and acceptance number, the economically optimal control plan can be optained. The article shows what influence increasing or decreasing condition, according to changeability of the size of these factors, of expected cost can have on the economy when an attribute control chart is used.

  • In this paper, we compare the robustness to the assumption of normality of the single control charts to control the mean and variance simultaneously. The charts examined were semicircle control chart, max chart and MSE chart with Shewhart individuals control charts. Their in-control and out-of-control performance were studied by simulation combined with computation. We calculated false alarm rate to compare among single charts by changing subgroup size and shifting mean of quality characteristics. It turns out that max chart is more robust than any of the others if the process is in-control. In some cases max chart and MSE chart are more robust than others if the process is out-of-control.

  • CUSUM control charts are widely used to monitor processes with small shifts. CUSUM control charts are, however, less effective in detecting for recurring cycles or frequent small shifts in the processes. With Shewhart control charts, we have applied the variety of run rules to check the stability of process in addition to the situations that some points fall outside the control limits. In this paper, we propose the Z -CUSUM control chart for monitoring the process with recurring cycles or frequent small shifts by use of the zone concept as like the Shewhart control charts.

  • Since Duncan(1956) first proposed an economic design of $\bar{X}$-control charts, most of the succeeding works on economic design of control charts assumed the exponential failure model like Duncan. Hu(1984), however, assumed a more versatile Weibull failure model to develop an economic design of $\bar{X}$-control charts and Banerjee and Rahim(1988) further improved Hu's design by changing the assumption of fixed-length sampling intervals to variable-length ones. In this article we follow the approach of Banerjee and Rahim(1988) but include a pair of warning limits inside the control limits in order to search for a failure without stopping the process when the sample mean falls between warning and control limits. The computational results indicate that the proposed model gives a lower cost than Banerjee and Rahim's model unless the early failure probability of a Weibull distribution is relatively large. The reduction in cost is shown to become larger as the cost of production loss outweighs the cost of searches for a failure.
