Marine microalgae have long been used as food additives and feeds for juvenile fish and invertebrates as their nutritional content is beneficial for humans and marine aquaculture species. Recently, they have also been recognized as a promising source for cosmeceutical, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical products as well as biofuels. Marine microalgae of various species are rich in multiple anti-oxidant phytochemicals and their bioactive components have been employed in cosmetics and dietary supplements. Oil contents in certain groups of marine microalgae are extraordinarily rich and abundant and therefore have been commercialized as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid supplements and mass production of microalgae-based biodiesels has been demonstrated by diverse research groups. Numerous natural products from marine microalgae with significant biological activities are reported yearly and this is attributed to their unique adaptive abilities to the great diversity of marine habitats and harsh conditions of marine environments. Previously unknown toxin compounds from red tide-forming dinoflagellates have also been identified which opens up potential applications in the blue biotechnology sector. This review paper provides a brief overview of the biotechnological potentials of Korean marine microalgae. We hope that this review will provide guidance for future marine biotechnology R&D strategies and the various marine microalgae-based industries in Korea.
VVC (Versatile Video Coding) is a new video compression technique that is being standardized, and it supports HD / UHD / 8K video, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video with a goal of approximately 2 times higher coding efficiency than the conventional HEVC. It also aims to support a variety of functionalities such as screen content coding, adaptive resolution changes, and independent sub-pictures. In this paper, we investigate the signaling process of intra prediction mode first, and develop an effective coding method of the chroma intra prediction mode. In case of the DM mode, the proposed method simplifies the prediction mode of the chorma intra prediction mode when referring to the angular mode of the luminance block. It can improve coding efficiency of the chroma intra prediction mode, and the proposed process can also consider the size of the block in order to further improve its coding efficiency.

Developing a home network and a ubiquitous infrastructure requires various communication techniques and devices with more advanced hardware. With this development, increasing realtime access to multimedia data results in rapid degradation of qualify for multimedia playback. This paper presents a traffic allocation technique based on MPP(Media Preference for Presentation) that can steadily maintain multimedia playback quality by adaptively allocating streaming traffic requested from clients with different playback performances. Media preference is defined in accordance with content popularity and playback performance of client devices. Through experiments when requested stream data exceeds processing ability of a midea server, the proposed allocation technique shows 10% quality improvement comparing to the system without applying the proposed allocation technique.

The emerging high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard adopts the quadtree-structured transform unit (TU) in the residual quadtree (RQT) coding. Each TU allows to be split into four equal sub-TUs recursively. The RQT coding is performed for all the possible transform depth levels to achieve the highest coding efficiency, but it requires a very high computational complexity for HEVC encoders. In order to reduce the computational complexity requested by the RQT coding, in this paper, we propose a fast TU size decision method incorporating an adaptive maximum transform depth determination (AMTD) algorithm and a full check skipping - early termination (FCS-ET) algorithm. Because the optimal transform depth level is highly content-dependent, it is not necessary to perform the RQT coding at all transform depth levels. By the AMTD algorithm, the maximum transform depth level is determined for current treeblock to skip those transform depth levels rarely used by its spatially adjacent treeblocks. Additionally, the FCS-ET algorithm is introduced to exploit the correlations of transform depth level between four sub-CUs generated by one coding unit (CU) quadtree partitioning. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed overall algorithm significantly reduces on average 21% computational complexity while maintaining almost the same rate distortion (RD) performance as the HEVC test model reference software, HM 13.0.

Video transcoding techniques provide an efficient mechanism to make a video content adaptive to the capabilities of a variety of clients. However, it is hard to provide an appropriate quality-of-service(QoS) to the clients owing to heavy workload on transcoding operations. In light of this fact, this paper presents the dual transcoding method in order to guarantee QoS in streaming services by maximizing resource usage in a transcoding server equipped with both CPU and GPU computing units. The CPU and GPU computing units have different architectural features. The proposed method speculates workload of incoming transcoding requests and then schedules the requests either to the CPU or GPU accordingly. From performance evaluation, the proposed dual transcoding method achieved a speedup of 1.84 compared with traditional transcoding approach.
Diet and feeding patterns of 10 species of gonostomatid fish in the Rockall Trough and Porcupine Seabight, northeastern Atlantic, were investigated as a part of studies analyzing the meso-and upper bathypelagic micronektonic fish communities in these two areas. Copepods were the major food organisms, composing more than 72% in both areas, and ostracods the second most abundant prey organisms (〉13%). The results of stomach content analyses reveals that most of gonostomatids, including two important species, Cyclothone braueri and C. microdon, feed continuously regardless of light cycle and a little at a time. The gonostomatids appear to be planktivores that consume small-sized prey; relative size of most preys was about one-tenth of fish length. These feeding patterns could be an adaptive characteristic of fish living in great deep water where the food items are scarcely present. In general there are no considerable inter-and intraspecific differences, not to mention regional differences, in the feeding of the gonostomatids at both stations except the large specimen of Gonostoma elongatum fed fish. Thus several coexisting species of the gonostomatid fish utilize the same resources, showing competitive relationships.
As recent fusion industry and ubiquitous technology have grown fast, network contents, which require high load, are provided in various infrastructures and facilities such as u-city and smart phones. Therefore, it is anticipated that the playback quality of multimedia compared to network loads degrades dramatically due to the drastic increment of real-time reference of conventional high load contents (eg. multimedia data). In this paper, we improved the method of the traffic assignment based on MPP which elevated the playback quality of multimedia by assigning discriminately the possible traffic of MMS with TP coefficients. When the TP coefficient which combines content preference with media preference was applied to a real-time traffic assignment scheduler, the simulation results showed that the multimedia playback stream was assigned within the possible traffic of a server. The real-time scheduling algorithm was improved by using the TP coefficient that combines the time-dependent image contents and the weighted value of media preference. It was observed from the experiment that the loss of the possible traffic decreases to 3.91% and 3.88% for three and four clients respectively.

Multimedia is a very popular service in the Internet. But, we cannot provide multimedia service at a uniform content, because networks and devices are various. Thus, an adaptive service is needed for multimedia transmission. Video Transcoding is the good solution that can service multimedia adaptively. This paper proposes the streaming system that is composed of encoder, transcoder, decoder The encoder enhanced time complexity and PSNR in case of transcoding using PP(Prediction Period). The decoder is almost same as the traditional media player. Transcoder reduced time complexity through combination of prediction period in encoder and skipping period to control frame rate in transcoder. In simulation results, the performances of proposed scheme outperform the system with traditional transcoder in time complexity and PSNR.
The importance of data service with mobile is becoming more and more significant with the development of wireless network. However, due to the several type of mobile devices and contents, there is a problem that mobile contents should be edited according to the features of the mobile devices and the service providers. Fortunately, there is some solutions that convert mobile contents automatically according to mobile operator. Nevertheless, it has some issues that the response time of content service is delayed when converting mobile contents in real-time. In this paper, we propose an image cache replacement algorithm for minizing the volume of the real-time image transformation. Also, using both of the pre-conversion method and the real-time conversion method to improve storage space and response time.

This paper proposes a fast learning-based interpolation algorithm to up-scale an input low-resolution image into a high-resolution image. In conventional learning-based super-resolution, a certain relationship between low-resolution and high-resolution images is learned from various training images and a specific high frequency synthesis information is derived. And then, an arbitrary low resolution image can be super-resolved using the high frequency synthesis information. However, such super-resolution algorithms require heavy memory space to store huge synthesis information as well as significant computation due to two-dimensional matching process. In order to mitigate this problem, this paper presents one-dimensional patch-based learning and synthesis. So, we can noticeably reduce memory cost and computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides higher PSNR and SSIM of about 0.7dB and 0.01 on average, respectively than conventional bicubic interpolation algorithm.
