  • One of the important factor for port selection is total handling charge(THC) of container terminal, and consequence of that the actual cost is vital for variation of THC. However, a great majority of the reported ABC applications have been limited to manufacturing and a little has been written on how the ABC approach can be used for logistics company especially for container terminal. This study proposes the applicable conceptual framework and cost management model based on Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing for container terminal.

  • Because strong wind is one of the few forces that, although considered in container crane design, still cause significant damage, a container crane was tested to investigate wind load characteristic in uniform flows. So, this study measured an external point pressure at the each members of a container crane according to a wind direction and a shape of members in a wind-tunnel test. The result of this test was compared to those of computation fluid dynamics using a CFX 10. The scale of a container crane model for wind tunnel test applied similarity scales to consider the size of the wind tunnel test section and the boundary condition for CFD is like wind tunnel test.

  • A Container terminal is a physical link between the ocean and land modes of transport and a major component of the container physical distribution system. A number of projects to increase terminal productivity in the world were found to be tied directly to increasing the efficiency of the intermodal activities, that is, to improving the physical distribution process. This is an indication that the productivity of container terminal is being considered withing a system prospective. The purpose of this study is to establish a model of the container physical distribution system for Pusan port linked with 4 sub-systems including Navigational aids system, Cargo handling/transfer/storage system on dock, Off-dock CY system and In-land transport connection system. and to analyze the system. From this analysis, we found that the system had three bottlenecks on the container physical distribution process in Pusan port : a) cargo handling b) storage and c) inland transport, and showed a way to improve the system.

  • The economy of South Korea has experienced two financial crises: the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2008 global financial crisis. These crises had a significant impact on the nation's macro-economic indicators. Furthermore, they had a profound influence on container traffic in container ports in Busan, which is the largest port in South Korea in terms of TEUs handled. However, the impact of the Asian financial crisis on container throughput is not clear. In this study, we assume that the two financial crises are independent and different, and then analyze how each of them impacted container throughput in Busan ports. To perform this analysis, we use an intervention model that is a special type of ARIMA model with input series. Intervention models can be used to model and forecast a response series and to analyze the impact of an intervention or event on the series. This study focuses on the latter case, and our results show that the impacts of the financial crises vary considerably.

  • In this paper, we propose quantitative evaluation method that enable security comparison between Security Container Runtimes. security container runtime technologies have been developed to address security issues such as Container escape caused by containers sharing the host kernel. However, most literature provides only a analysis of the security of container technologies using rough metrics such as the number of available system calls, making it difficult to compare the secureness of container runtimes quantitatively. While the proposed model uses a new method of combining the degree of exposure of host system calls with various external vulnerability metrics. With the proposed technique, we measure and compare the security of runC (Docker default Runtime) and two representative Security Container Runtimes, gVisor, and Kata container.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of new operation system for port container terminals. We assumed that the operation system of container terminal consists of monitorig & control system, operation system, planning system, and information technology, and we selected total 19 technology alternatives. Through the results of questionnaire and interview received from field expert, we established the evaluation model and analyze the productivity improvement by estimating the weight and the priority of productivity for operation system. From the developed model, we provide useful implications to introduce new technologies of operation system for domestic container terminals.

  • As the annual growth rate of port handling container volume in Korea has faced slowdown, this paper attempts to find strategies for the domestic container terminal operators in order to enhance competitiveness. For this, the model of using AHP and the fuzzy set theory is used for evaluating competitiveness between domestic and global container terminal operators. The evaluation model hierarchy is developed based on SERM(subject-environment-resource-mechanism) theory of business strategy. The results show domestic operators are ranked lower than global player so that they particularly pay attention to the areas of scale of economy, business diversification, and globalization strategy.

  • Container technologies are widely used in infrastructures to deploy and manage applications in cloud computing environment. As containers are light-weight software, the cluster of cloud applications can easily scale up or down to provide Internet-based services. Container-based applications can well deal with fluctuate workloads by dynamically adjusting physical resources. Current works of scheduling applications often construct applications' performance models with collected historical training data, but these works with static models cannot self-adjust physical resources to meet the dynamic requirements of cloud computing. Thus, we propose a self-adaptive automatic container scheduling framework AutoScale for cloud applications, which uses a feedback-based approach to adjust physical resources by extending, contracting and migrating containers. First, a queue-based performance model for cloud applications is proposed to correlate performance and workloads. Second, a fuzzy Kalman filter is used to adjust the performance model's parameters to accurately predict applications' response time. Third, extension, contraction and migration strategies based on predicted response time are designed to schedule containers at runtime. Furthermore, we have implemented a framework AutoScale with container scheduling strategies. By comparing with current approaches in an experiment environment deployed with typical applications, we observe that AutoScale has advantages in predicting response time, and scheduling containers to guarantee that response time keeps stable in fluctuant workloads.

  • This study aims to implement an empirical research about the efficiency of container Ports, and to suggest an effective strategy which can operate container Ports more well. This paper presents a new approach to the measurement of efficiency. Data envelopment analysis(DEA), as it is called, has particular applicability in the service sector. This study applies DEA to provide an efficiency measurement for fifty three container ports including Pusan Port. As a result, we suggest several ideas that can improve the efficiency of container terminals. They are as follows. Firstly, we discriminate between efficient and inefficient container ports and then present a method that can move to efficiency container terminal and a benchmarking port. Secondly, we evaluate the efficiency of Pusan port, and grasp the position at the present time, suggest an advanced direction in future.
