A Study on Korean and Japanese Consumers' Attitudes and Consumer Knowledge about Luxury Brands (한국과 일본 소비자의 명품 브랜드에 대한 태도 및 소비자 지식에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to understand the characteristics of Korean and Japanese consumers by analyzing the relation among consumer attitudes, concepts, and knowledge about luxury brands. In addition, the present study is to help to establish more effective marketing strategies for luxury companies by providing new data based on consumer knowledge. The author conducted a survey on a total of 816 male/female Korean and Japanese subjects ranging in age from 20 to 50s. The results of this study are as follows: First, Korean consumers have more positive attitudes toward luxury brands than Japanese consumers. Second, regarding the concepts about luxury brands, Korean consumers have concepts of luxury such as "involvement" "symbol of status" "scarcity" and "hedonism"and Japanese consumers have concepts such as "involvement" "ostentation" "high value"and "ornamentation" Third, Korean consumers are more confident in their knowledge and experiences about luxury brand consumption than Japanese consumers. The subjective knowledge has positive impacts on consumer attitudes toward luxury brands and becomes one of the reasons for the friendlier attitudes of Korean consumers toward luxury brands, compared to Japanese consumers. Fourth, the level of objective knowledge of Korean and Japanese consumers is high; but there is no statistically significant difference in the two countries.

  • This paper attempts to show that consumers' own information processing mode can play an important role in inducing favorable product evaluations, which is the most key goal of marketing. Th elaboration likelihood model contends that consumers' motivation and knowledge, in addition to the outside marketing information, affects the evaluation process. On the other hand, The resource matching hypothesis suggests that an excessively high level of information processing may lead to negative evaluations. In this study, Need for closure exacerbated overall evaluations of consumers. Such relationship was more salient in the condition of low severity that in the condition of high severity. Also under the situation of low severity, consumers with high level of relevant knowledge made evaluations more favorable, compared to the consumers of low knowledge. On contrast under the situation of high severity, relevant knowledge leaded to less favorable evaluations. This experiment identifies the appropriateness of the elaboration likelihood model and the resource matching hypothesis. Especially This study suggests an rare example that consumers' knowledge may not paly an desirable role in making their judgments.

  • When it comes to the development of a retail market, it has not only influenced the supply and sales of seafood, but it has also led to considerable changes in consumers' purchasing behavior and purchasing purposes. As consumers' incomes and lifestyles have improved, the tendency to purchase seafood has rapidly changed. In addition, the increase in two-income family incomes that resulted from women's active participation in society has increased the number of consumers purchasing home meal replacements (HMR) or convenience food rather than original food. With these changes in social-economic background and in consumers' needs, the purchase of seafood is gradually changing. As a result, companies are constructing diverse marketing strategies to satisfy their needs. Companies' marketing strategies have an immediate and vital effect on consumers' purchases of seafood. The most important and fundamental role is providing an opportunity for consumers to choose what to buy by being giving information and knowledge. In this paper, the purchasing behavior of consumers buying seafood will be examined with respect to their knowledge. First, which factors among a diverse range of marketing strategies exerted a significant impact on consumers' objectives and subjective knowledge was examined. Second, the study investigated which knowledge factors were important in influencing attitudes and purchasing purposes based on knowledge level. By comparing and analyzing factors related to consumers' knowledge with respect to seafood purchases, information is provided to inform companies about efficient strategies for marketing tactics.

  • Purpose - The study verified the effects of consumers' knowledge perception upon word-of-mouth intention and purchase intention of consumers who were exposed to a lot of information, and examined consumer's behavior from multi-dimensional points of view. Research design, data, and methodology - The study conducted the test of difference between consumer's cognition on importance and satisfaction of HMR product by gap of HMR (Home Meal Replacement) product for IPA analysis. The consumer's reliability and words-of-mouth were measured by the questionnaire method with 4 questions according to Likert 7-point scale. Conversion into z-score removed the difference of variables. Results - The causal relation model for importance, satisfaction and gap, not relying upon multi-dimensional scaling and others, could construct causal relation model to give implications. Difference (d) of the products could lessen consumer's reliability to increase consumer's knowledge perception, word-of-mouth intention, knowledge perception, and purchase intention. Therefore, enterprises should make an effort to lessen consumers' complaint for the products and to elevate consumers' reliability. Enterprises also try to give consumers exact information and to promote purchase intention. Conclusions - Difference (d) of consumers' complaint and/or disappointment decreased consumers' reliability to increase knowledge perception. Enterprises should supply consumers with products according to their requirements to minimize the gap and to give them proper information.

  • This study, the second in two part series, focuses on effect of product involvement and consumer knowledge on consumers' perceptions of six dimensions of clothing price: price -quality schema, prestige sensitivity: sale proneness, price mavenism, value consciousness, and price consciousness. Additionally, correlation between product involvement and consumer knowledge was examined. Multi-item measures of six dimensions of price, product involvement, and consumer knowledge were included in the questionnaires. The subjects were 264 college students living in Seoul, Korea. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by factor analysis, regression analysis, and correlation analysis using SPSS PC. In addition, two focus group interviews were conducted to obtain qualitative data for the result interpretation. Results of this study showed that the degree of consumers' product involvement significantly affects consumers' perceptions of each price dimension except price consciousness dimension. Consumers' knowledge about clothing has a significant effect on consumers' perceptions of all price dimensions. Dimensions of product involvement and consumer knowledge were partially correlated. Marketing implications based on these results were suggested.

Effects of Brand Knowledge and Affect on Brand Choice Confidence of Global Fashion Brands -Moderation Effect of Overseas Residence Experience- (브랜드 지식과 감정이 글로벌 패션 브랜드 선택 확신에 미치는 영향 -해외 거주 경험의 조절 효과-)

  • This study examines how the overseas residence experience of Korean consumers influences the relationship of global fashion brand knowledge and brand choice confidence. We contrast two kinds of consumer brand knowledge, using the concepts of Alba and Hutchinson's expertise and familiarity. Considering the effect of positive affect on intuitive information processing, the present study investigated the role of positive affect in consumer brand knowledge and brand choice confidence link. The proposed model was tested with structural-equation analysis. The results show that expertise and familiarity effect the positive affect. Positive affect, in turn, influences brand choice confidence. The results indicate that the processes underlying global fashion brand knowledge and brand choice confidence link are different between the consumers with overseas residence experience for more than a year and the consumers without it. The route from expertise to positive affect has a significant impact on the consumers with overseas residence experience but not on the consumers without it; however, the route from familiarity to positive affect and the path from positive affect to brand choice confidence have a greater impact on the consumers without overseas residence experience than the consumers with it. We find that the consumers with overseas residence experience favor expertise in the process underlying global fashion brand knowledge and brand choice confidence link, whereas the consumers without it favor familiarity and affect based thought.

Effect of Attentiveness in Purchase behavior and Consumer Knowledge on use of unit Price Information

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate consumer use of unit price information introduced in Korea 1999. A total of 571 observations were analyzed by frequency, percent, and paired t-test using SPSS. The main findings are (1) consumers use unit price information to make better purchase decisions, (2) consumers with higher than average attentiveness in purchase behavior utilize unit price information to make better buying decisions, and (3) consumers with higher than average knowledge utilize unit price information to make better buying decisions. (4) Also if either attentiveness in purchase behavior or consumer knowledge is lower than average, unit price information helped consumers make better purchase decisions. (5) However, there was no difference among those consumers with below average or above average attentiveness and knowledge.

The Study on the Effect of Waiting Line on Consumers' Perceived Quality and Emotional State

  • This study examines a model which simultaneously contains two paths between waiting line and purchase intention: one tested the positive effect of waiting line through consumers' perceived quality, whereas another one go through consumers' emotional state to test the negative effect of waiting line on purchase intention. To further understand perceived quality, the study divided perceived quality into perceived product quality and perceived service quality. The study used restaurants in the experiment. Results indicated that although long waits in line will directly increase both consumers' product quality perception and negative emotions, the total indirect effects on purchase intention are still significantly positive. For consumers' perceived service quality, long waiting situations have no such effect on it. Significant results from a moderation analysis also shown that consumers in low-level knowledge settings are more influenced by waiting lines than those in high-level knowledge settings when they make the product's quality-related judgment. However, the level of consumer knowledge does not moderate the relationship between waiting lines and service quality.

The Association Between Consumers' Knowledge and Behavior on Antibiotics Use for Common Cold (항생제에 대한 지식이 소비자의 항생제 사용행태에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study is to examine the association between the knowledge and behavior of consumers on antibiotics use for common cold. Consumers' knowledge about antibiotics was measured by a questionnaire consisting of six items related to the effect of antibiotics and another three items about use of antibiotics. Telephone interview was conducted during the days between June 24 and July 2, 2009, and 1,015 persons responded the interview. Final analysis included 896 persons without missing data. Thirty six percent of respondents answered that they checked their prescriptions to ensure that antibiotics was prescribed for common cold. About 6% asked their doctors to prescribe antibiotics for common cold, and 9.7% asked them not to. More than a quarter of respondents answered that they used to take antibiotics leftover from a previous illness. Patients who knew better about the effect of antibiotics on common cold were more likely to ask doctors not to prescribe antibiotics (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.45~3.65), or to check prescriptions (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.40~2.46). Higher knowledge about use of antibiotics was related to low probability of asking doctors to prescribe antibiotics. This result suggests that consumers' knowledge about antibiotics can influence doctor's prescription of antibiotics for common cold.

  • This study examined the influences of product knowledge(subject knowledge, purchase experience and information search) on perceived risks and benefits to natural dyeing product. Data were collected from a total of 213 Korean females ranging from 20 to 50 years old who know natural dyeing product through online survey. There were significant differences between(or among) groups with different levels of subject knowledge, purchase experience and information search in several types of perceived risks and benefits to natural dyeing product. Consumers with high knowledge of natural dyeing product perceived several types of risks lower than consumers with low knowledge but they perceived several types of benefits higher than consumers with low knowledge.
