  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) subluxation and dislocation are uncommon but very unpleasant and distressing conditions to patients. Subluxation of the TMJ is an excessively abnormal condylar excursion secondary to flaccidity and laxity of the capsule. When the condyle head excurses anterior to the eminence upon wide opening, it can return to the fossa by self-manipulation or non-surgical conservative reduction. Surgery is recommended if a complete dislocation, so-called open lock, occurs as a chronic or recurrent protracted condition that cannot be reduced voluntarily. A range of surgical procedures can be performed to limit condylar hypermobility inclusing soft tissue tethering, creation of articular obstacles, removal of mechanical blockade and augmentation of articular eminence using different kinds of grafts. In the present case, a 74-year-old woman was diagnosed with a chronic TMJ dislocation that had lasted for 6 months. Bilateral condylectomy was performed and the post-operative results were good without functional limitations or recurrence.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of Two dimensional backward-facing step by numerical approach. A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA algorithm is used for the solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to simulate the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow conditions at which the experimental data can be available for the backward-facing step. The twenty kinds of Reynolds number are used for the calculations. In an effort to demonstrate that the reported solutions are dependent on the mesh refinement, computations are performed on seven different meshes of uniformly increasing refinement. Also to investigate the result of inflow dependence, two kinds of the inflow profile are chosen for the laminar flow. As criterion of benchmarking the result of numerical simulation, reattachment length is used for the selected Reynolds numbers.

  • This study investigated the influence of composite resins with different elastic moduli and occlusal loading conditions on the stress distribution of restored notch-shaped non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) using 3D finite element analysis. Two different materials, Tetric Flow and Z100, were used as representative flowable hybrid resins for the restoration of NCCL. A static point load of 500 N was applied at the buccal and palatal cusps. The ratios of stress reduction to energy dissipation were better in the compressive state than the tensile state regardless of the restorative material. The total dissipation ratios for Tetric Flow were 1.5% and 4.2% larger than those for Z100 under compression and tension, respectively. Therefore, tensile stress poses more of a risk for tooth fracture, and Tetric Flow is a more appropriate material for restoration.

  • This paper deals with the problem of designing a linear sliding surface design for a class of uncertain systems with mismatched unstructured uncertainties. The uncertain system under consideration may have mismatched parameter uncertainties in the state matrix as well as in the input matrix. In terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), we give a sufficient condition for the existence of linear sliding surfaces guaranteeing the asymptotic stability of the sliding mode dynamics. We show that our LMI condition can be less conservative than the existing conditions and our result supplement the existing results. Finally, we give a numerical example showing that our method can be better than the previous results.

  • This paper deals with an output feedback H control problem for linear time ivariant systems with state delay. The proposed output feedback controller is represented by the lower linear fractional transformation of alinear time invariant system and a delay operator. Sufficient conditions for the existence of the output feedback controller are given in the form of linear matrix inequalities which are less conservative than those for the existence of a rational output feedback controler. We also present a numerical example to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.of the proposed method.

  • Welding is required for a connection between two different components in the nuclear fuel of a pressurized water reactor. This work relies on a mechanical experiment and analytic results to investigate the structural integrity of nuclear fuel in a situation where some components are not welded to each other. A series of lateral vibration tests are performed in a test facility, and the test structures are examined in terms of dynamic behavior. In the tests, the displacement signal at every grid structure that sustains fuel rods is measured and processed to identify the dynamic properties. The fluid-elastic stability of the structure is also analyzed to evaluate susceptibility to a cross flow with an assumed conservative cross flow distribution. The test and analysis results confirm that the structural integrity can be maintained even in the absence of some welding connections.

  • Disorders of the shoulder in which conservative management is indicated as a primary treatment include idiopathic frozen shoulder, atraumatic instability. acute calcific tendinitis , subacromial impingement syndrome, partial thickness or small full thickness tear of the rotator cuff, and chronic rotator cuff tear in elderly population. Aside from medication and various physical modalities used for relief of pain, the mainstay of orthopaedic rehabilitation consists of stretching of the tendons and capsulologamentous complex, and strengtnening of rotator cuff muscles as well as surrounding muscles. However, orthopaedic rehabilitation in chronically painful conditions of the shoulder differs in detail according to the specific diseases or injuries, And it is important to make the rehabilitation program that can be undertaken by the patients rather than adhering to a fixed schedule. Also the program should be changed as the condition of the patient improves or deteriorates. Nevertheless there are basic rules of stretching and strengthening , which should always be observed in applying orthopaedic rehabilitation treatment.

  • The dissolution process of NAPLs is significantly important in predicting the transport and/or fate of the contaminants and designing remedial systems. In this research, experimental observations on dissolution of TCE pool under various hydrodynamic conditions are done using an aquifer model. Hydrodynamic parameters such as linear pore velocity and dispersion coefficient are estimated from the results of preliminary tracer tests using bromide as conservative tracer before doing the TCE dissolution experiments. It is found that hydrodynamic parameters are distinctly affected by the clay lens imbeded in the aquifer model. Nonequilibrium and transient dissolution rates are observed from the results of TCE dissolution experiments.

  • In this paper, the guaranteed cost filtering design method for linear time delay systems with convex bounded uncertainties in discrete-time case is presented. The uncertain parameters are assumed to be unknown but belonging to known convex compact set of polytotype less conservative than norm bounded parameter uncertainty. The main purpose is to design a stable filter which minimizes the guaranteed cost. The sufficient condition for the existence of filter, the guaranteed cost filter design method, and the upper bound of the guaranteed cost are proposed. Since the proposed sufficient conditions are LMI(linear matrix inequality) forms in terms of all finding variables, all solutions can be obtained simultaneously by means of powerful convex programming tools with global convergence assured. Finally, a numerical example is given to check the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper describes the synthesis of robust and non-fragile Η$^{\infty}$ output feedback controller for parameter uncertain systems with time delay. The sufficient condition of controller existence, and the design method of robust and non-fragile Η$^{\infty}$ output feedback controller are presented. The obtained conditions can be represented as parameterized LMIs, and PLMIs feasibility problems involve infinitely many LMIs hence are very hard to solve. Therefore, PLMIs are replaced by a finite set of LMIs using relaxation techniques(separated convexity concepts). This method is potentially conservative but often provide practically exploitable solutions of difficult problems with a reasonable computational effort. The compatibility of resulting controller is illustrated by numerical example.
