  • Adaptive reinements yield a large sparse system of equations. In order to solve such a system, the core storage requirement is an important consideration. Accordingly, an iterative method which minimizes the core storage and provides a high rate of convergence is called for. In this paper the conjugate gradient algorithms with various preconditionings including the incomplete Cholesky decomposition are examined.

  • The wavelet analysis technique is applied in the spectral domain to efficiently represent the multi-scale features of the impedance matrices. In this scheme, the 2-D quadtree decomposition (applying the wavelet transform to only the part of the matrix) method often used in image processing area is applied for a sparse moment matrix. CG(Conjugate-Gradient) method is also applied for saving memory and computation time of wavelet transformed moment matrix. Numerical examples show that for rectangular cylinder case the non-zero elements of the transformed moment matrix grows only as O($N^{1.6}$).

  • We are concerned with mathematical analysis related to the bi-pointwise control for a mixed type of wave equation. In particular, we are interested in the systematic build-up of the bi-pointwise control actuators;one at the boundary and the other at the interior point simultaneously. The main purpose is to examine Hilbert Uniqueness Method for the setting of bi-pointwise control actuators and to establish relevant algorithm based on our analysis. After discussing the weak solution for the state equation, we investigate bi-pointwise control mechanism and relevant mathematical analysis based on HUM. We then proceed to set up an algorithm based on the conjugate gradient method to establish bi-pointwise control actuators to halt the system.

  • It is known that the steepest descent(SD) method and the conjugate gradient(CG) method [1, 2, 5, 6] converge when these methods are applied to solve linear systems of the form Ax = b, where A is symmetric and positive definite. For some finite difference discretizations of elliptic problems, one gets positive definite matrices that are almost symmetric. Practically, the SD method and the CG method work for these matrices. However, the convergence of these methods is not guaranteed theoretically. The SD method is also called Orthores(1) in iterative method papers. Elman [4] states that the convergence proof for Orthores($\kappa$), with $\kappa$ a positive integer, is not heard. In this paper, we prove that the SD method and the CG method converge when the $\iota$$^2$ matrix norm of the non-symmetric part of a positive definite matrix is less than some value related to the smallest and the largest eigenvalues of the symmetric part of the given matrix.(omitted)

  • This paper is concerned with a boundary control problem for the vorticity minimization, in which the flow is governed by the stationary two dimensional Stokes equations. We wish to find a mathematical formulation and a relevant process for an appropriate control along the part of the boundary to minimize the vorticity due to the flow. After showing the existence and uniqueness of an optimal solution, we derive the optimality conditions. The differentiability of the state solution in regard to the control parameter shall be conjunct with the necessary conditions for the optimal solution. For the minimizer, an algorithm based on the conjugate gradient method shall be proposed.

  • An inverse problem to determine two-dimensional total heat exchange factor is studied for the prediction of the billet temperature in the reheating furnace. Temperature measurements by the experiment are used in the inverse analysis. This inverse analysis employs the conjugate gradient method. The total heat exchange factors for 12-zones of the cross-section of the billet are estimated. The estimated temperatures at measurement locations are in good agreements with the measured temperatures.

  • Multi-layer perceptron neural networks have been constructed to classify four types of defects in steam generator tubes. Three features are extracted from the signals of the eddy current testing method. These include maximum impedance, phase angle at the point of maximum impedance, and an angle between the point of maximum impedance and the point of half the maximum impedance. Two hundred sets of these features are used for training and assessing the networks. Two approaches are involved to train the networks and to classify the defect type. One is the conjugate gradient method and the other is the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method which is recognized as the most popular algorithm of quasi-Newton methods. It is found from the computation results that the training time of the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method is much faster than that of the conjugate gradient method in most cases. On the other hand, no significant difference of the classification performance between the two methods is observed.

  • This paper deals with the problem of time delay estimation using de-convolution. Two approaches, conjugate gradient method and the total lease square method have been presented to solve the de-convolution problem. Numerical simulation demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed methods over the conventional GCC based algorithms and FIR filter method.

  • Recently, ADI scheme has been a most common tool for solving shallow water equation numerically. But ADI models of tidal flow is likely to cause so called ADI effect in such a region of the Yellow Sea which shows complex topography and has submarine canyons especially. To overcome this, a finite difference algorithm is developed which adopts fully implicit method and preconditioned conjugate gradient squared method. Applying the algorithm including simulation of intertidal zone to Sae-Man-Keum. velocity fields and flooding/drying phenomena are simulated well in spite of complex topography.
