Finishing methods and compressive strength-void ratio relationships of in-situ porous concrete pavement

  • In this paper, the effect of finishing methods on the relationships between compressive strength, permeability and void ratio of porous concrete (POC) or pervious concrete is discussed, using core specimens taken from actually constructed POC pavement. To attain reliable performance in the construction work, a newly designed finisher for POC is developed, and the performances as well as methods for controlling void ratio are examined. The POC pavements were finished with three finishing methods viz., no finishing, finishing with standard compactor and finishing with prototype compactor. The results show that the prototype POC finisher is efficient in controlling the void ratio and the quality of POC pavements. The relationships between compressive strength as well as permeability and void ratio of the in-situ POC pavements finished by the prototype machine were obtained. They are slightly different from the laboratory test results owing mainly to the mold effect and the differences in compaction modes.

Numerical analysis of thermal and composite stresses in pre-stressed concrete pavements

  • One of the major benefits of the pre-stressed concrete pavements is the omission of tension in concrete that results in a reduction of cracks in the concrete slabs. Therefore, the life of the pavement is increased as the thickness of the slabs is reduced. One of the most important issues in dealing with the prestressed concrete pavement is determination of the magnitude of the pre-stress. Three dimensional finite element analyses are conducted in this research to study the pre-stress under various load (Boeing 777) and thermal gradient combinations. The model was also analyzed under temperature gradients without the presence of traffic loading and the induced stresses were compared with those from theoretical relationships. It was seen that the theoretical relationships result in conservative values for the stress.

Evaluation of Internally Cured Concrete Pavement Using Environmental Responses and Critical Stress Analysis

  • Three full-scale instrumented test slabs were constructed and tested using a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) to evaluate the structural behavior of internally cured concrete (ICC) for use in pavements under Florida condition. Three mix designs selected from a previous laboratory testing program include the standard mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio, the ICC with 0.32 water-cement ratio, and the ICC mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio. Concrete samples were prepared and laboratory tests were performed to measure strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion and shrinkage properties. The environmental responses were measured using strain gages, thermocouples, and linear variable differential transformers instrumented in full-scale concrete slabs. A 3-D finite element model was developed and calibrated using strain data measured from the full-scale tests using the HVS. The results indicate that the ICC slabs were less susceptible to the change of environmental conditions and appear to have better potential performance based on the critical stress analysis.

Optimal Sawcutting Methods for Hydrating Concrete Pavements

  • The details of an approach to account for the factors that have been found to affect the ability and the probability to control cracking due to sawcutting in newly constructed concrete pavements are presented. Several factors such as material strength parameters, method and quality of curing, slab and subbase stiffness, and concrete shrinkage affect the probability of crack initiation. Others are relevant to concrete mixture characteristics that affect development of early aged stresses caused by shrinkage and thermally induced contraction. This paper presents the results of a probabilistic analysis of the factors that affect crack control using sawcut notches. Cost analyses on both conventional and early-entry sawcutting methods are shown to support the results of the probabilistic analysis. From both an operational and cost standpoint, it is evident for the environmental conditions considered that early-entry sawcut methodology holds a significant advantage over conventional methods.

유리섬유 그리드를 이용한 포장면 반사균열 억제 (Reducing the Reflection Cracks of the Pavement using Glass Fiber Grids)

  • Reflection cracks can be occurred in the asphalt layer overlaid on portland cement concrete pavements, because this layer is sensitive to environmental conditions including temperature changes and displacements of the pavement. A result of trial applications using glass fiber grids is introduced in this paper. Glass fiber grids were used between the asphalt layer and the concrete base to reduce the reflection crack of the asphalt layer. No cracks were observed in the glass grid installed area about 2 years later from trial constructions.

유한 요소법에 의한 콘크리트 포장 구조의 평면 거동연구 (Finite Element Analysis of Planar Effect on the Concrete Pavements)

  • 콘크리트 포장구조에 있어서 온도팽창과 건조수축으로 인한 평면 변위 거동은 차량 하중에 관계없이, 포장슬래브와 노반과의 마찰에 의한 줄눈의 개폐에 주로 기인하고 있다. 따라서 콘크리트 포장구조의 평면 변위 거동을 해석하기 위하여 한 절점에서 dx, dy, 2 자유도를 갖는 직사각형 평면요소의 강성행열과 마찰, 건조수축, 온도 등으로 인한 등가절점 하중을 유도하였다. 콘크리트의 건조수축으로 인한 포장슬래브의 구조해석결과, 슬래브 길이가 길거나 지반과의 마찰계수가 큰 경우를 제외하고는, 큰 응력은 발생하지 않았지만, 차량하중과 조합할때는 인장응력의 증가와 함께 포장 슬래브에 균열이 발생할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

  • 노후화된 콘크리트 포장 슬래브를 원위치에서 파쇄하여 기층재료로 활용하고 그 위에 덧씌우기 포장을 건설하는 원위치파쇄기층화 공법은 반사균열 문제를 완벽하게 해결할 수 있는 장점 때문에 미국에서는 성공적으로 사용되어왔다. 국내 콘크리트포장은 미국에 비하여 포장두께가 두껍고, 린콘크리트 보조기층을 사용하는 특이점을 가지고 있어 이 공법의 국내 적용시 시공성과 경제성을 확보하는 것이 필요하다. 따라서 국내 포장조건에 적합한 Multi-Head형식의 파쇄장비를 개발하였다. 이 장비는 반사균열을 제어하면서 우수한 지지력을 가진 기층으로 파쇄 되도록 설계되었다. 폐도와 사용중인 고속도로에 개발된 원위치 파쇄장비를 이용하여 시험시공을 수행하였으며, 시험시공 결과, 설계에서 목표한 파쇄골재 입경과 파쇄깊이로 노후 콘크리트포장을 파쇄하였으며, 매우 높은 지지력을 확보한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 일반적인 재포장에 비하여 우수한 시공성과 경제성의 확보가 가능함을 보였다.

골재노출 콘크리트의 소음 저감 특성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Properties of Noise Reduction on the Exposed Aggregate Concrete)

  • Generally, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, It is known that PCC pavements create more noise than asphaltic surfaces due to the noise from interaction of tire and pavement surface. Recently exposed aggregate concrete(EAC) pavement was sugested to reduce traffic noise. So in this paper, we considered several materials and mixture proportions for proper depth of exposed aggregate which was measured by the sand patching test, and then according to those relationships, we tried to find out dosage of retarding agents and optimum mixture proportions for expecting good effects to noise reduction. It were also evaluated sound level at every conditions of surface texture as like depth of aggregate exposed, profile peak, distance of aggregate and types of aggregate.

바이모달 트램 전용선로 포장 형태에 따른 온도의 영향 (Temperature Effect on Pavement Types of Bimodal Tram Dedicated Lane)

  • To analyze the effect of temperature on pavement types of dedicated lane, we have performed a temperature monitoring for pavements which were constructed in test track for Bimodal Tram. These pavements classified into four types; natural and artificial lawn, concrete and asphalt. Dedicated lane composed of natural and artificial lawn has a complex structure with concrete slab in contact surface of tires, and with 1m natural or artificial lawn in the middle part of lane. From monitoring results for pavements, dedicated lane with natural lawn shows lower temperature value compared with other dedicated lanes, and it is expected to decrease the heat island effect of conventional road if constructed.

특수 구간 도로 포장에 포스트텐션 콘크리트 포장 적용 방안 (Application Methodologies of Post-Tensioned Concrete Pavements for Specialized Section Pavements)

  • 본 연구는 특수 구간의 도로 포장에 포스트텐션 콘크리트 포장(PTCP: Post-Tensioned Concrete Pavement) 공법을 적용하기 위한 설계 방안을 제시하기 위하여 수행되었다. 본 연구에서 고려한 특수 구간으로는 기존의 포장에서 많은 문제점이 발생하는 도심지 버스전용차로 정류소 구간과 고속도로 암거 설치 구간을 선정하였다. 이러한 특수 구간의 PTCP 설계는 응력 기준 설계와 피로파손 기준 설계로 이루어지며 두 설계 결과 중에서 보수적인 결과를 설계에 적용한다. 응력 기준 설계에서는 유한요소해석을 통해 극한의 하중조건을 고려하여 발생할 수 있는 최대 인장응력을 산정한 뒤 이를 감소시켜서 최대 인장응력이 허용휨강도 이하가 되도록 텐던의 개수와 긴장 간격을 산정하였다. 피로파손 기준 설계에서는 AASHTO 피로파손 공식을 기반으로 긴장 설계를 수행하였다. 연구결과, 버스전용차로 정류소 구간과 암거 설치 구간에 PTCP 공법을 적용할 수 있는 설계 방안을 수립하였다.
