This study purports to review traditional health concepts of Korea by age, and to compare them to health concepts defined in western societies. Furthermore the study offers these results as the basis of construction for Korean nursing theory. Literature for the review were traditional health books published in Korea. These books are Euibangyoochui, Hyangyakjibsungbang, Dongeuibogam, Eiyangpyun, Dongeuisoosebowon, & Hwangjaenaekyung. In addition, articles that studied traditional literature or Korean medical history were reviewed when no publication of a primary source was available. In ancient Korean society, health was viewed as a 'good relationship or harmony with a supernatural subject', 'harmony of earth, water, fire, and air', and a 'long life with no illness'. The treatment aspect of medicine was emphasized in the middle-aged society. The health concepts in the pre-modern society included such concepts as 'jeongkhibojeon', 'adjustment to the nature', 'harmony between yang and yin', 'strengthening of jeongkhishin', 'circulation of owoonyookchi', 'kyungjok mind-body state' and 'jeongshimjeonghang'. Major health concepts in western literature were 'adaptation', 'role performance', 'actualization of human potential', 'adaptation and actualization of potential', and 'comfort'. Traditional health concepts of Korea focus on principles. They deliver abstract meanings, which make their measures uneasy. They believe in holism and unity with nature and especially emphasize the mental aspect. On the other hand, health concepts of western societies focus on phenomena. Their meanings are somewhat concrete, which make their measurements relatively easy. They see a person adapts positively to the environment as an independent being from the environment. These concepts have biopsychosocial aspects with no partial emphasis in the mental aspects. These traditional concepts of health were classified into two main perspectives. One is the unity of heaven & man, and the other is the unity of mind and body. The former perspective is based on the main concept of Chi. The latter has the main concept of ruling of the mind. The two main concepts discussed above need further examination for development of a nursing theory for Korean society. The application of circulation of Chi needs balance and harmony, and the application of ruling of mind needs temperance.

The purpose of this study was to research and analyze students' informal knowledge before they learned formal knowledge about fraction concepts and to see how to apply this informal knowledge to teach fraction concepts. According to this purpose, research questions were follows. 1) What is the students' informal knowledge about dividing into equal parts, the equivalent fraction, and comparing size of fractions among important and primary concepts of fraction? 2) What are the contents to can lead bad concepts among students' informal knowledge? 3) How will students' informal knowledge be used when teachers give lessons in fraction concepts? To perform this study, I asked interview questions that constructed a form of drawing expression, a form of story telling, and a form of activity with figure. The interview questions included questions related to dividing into equal parts, the equivalent fraction, and comparing size of fractions. The conclusions are as follows: First, when students before they learned formal knowledge about fraction concepts solve the problem, they use the informal knowledge. And a form of informal knowledge is vary various. Second, among students' informal knowledge related to important and primary concepts of fraction, there are contents to lead bad concepts. Third, it is necessary to use students' various informal knowledge to instruct fraction concepts so that students can understand clearly about fraction concepts.

In conceptual ecology, a concept does not exist independently but occupies an ecological niche in ecological environment. Among many biological concepts, genetic concepts are connected to several units including the genetics unit, and within the genetics unit the concepts of sub-areas are highly dependent on one another. For this reason, we analyzed conceptual diversity and conceptual proximity of genetic concepts through the ecological niche approach. For this purpose, we surveyed 995 9th graders. The areas covered in the survey were four genetic concepts: gene, chromosome, mitosis, and meiosis. The questionnaire presented biological concepts or terms related to each area, and the respondent marked the relevance between the presented biological concepts or terms and each area on a scale of 1~30 points. With 9th grade students, we analyzed the change of genetic concepts through class by the ecological niche approach. Through class, the total number of concepts increased in all of the areas, and the increase was smallest in the area of meiosis followed by mitosis, chromosome and gene. Relative density decreased with increases in the number of concepts. The conceptual diversity index also increased through class in all of the areas, and the increase was smallest in the area of meiosis followed by mitosis, chromosome and gene. In addition, difference in the relative density of concepts was reduced after class, and difference in the score of relevance was also reduced and consequently similarity among concepts increased. From these results were drawn conclusions as follows: First, through class, the conceptual diversity of genetic concepts increased. Second, through class, the conceptual proximity of genetic concepts increased.

The main purpose of this study is to examine the concepts appeared on researches and provide the future research directions in field of child health nursing. A descriptive study was conducted. 205 studies were included in an analysis the concepts in terms of the domain of client for a total 321 researches. All were originally published between 1990 and 2000 in Korea. An analysis of concepts for this study was used the metaparadigm framework for nursing proposed by H.S. Kim(2000). The concepts for this study were categorized by essentialistic concepts, problematic concepts, health-care experiential concepts with the following results. 1. Based on the four domains suggested Kim (2000), 205 studies(63.9%) belong to the domain of client ; 109 studies(34%) belong to the practice domain of nursing; 3 studies(0.9%) belong to the client-nurse domain; and 4 studies belong to the domain of environment, respectively. 2. In the domain of client, 117(57.1%) studies used concept of parent. Among them, mother was the prevailing research population(103 studies). 64 studies(31.2%) used child population and the developmental stage of children varied from preterm to puberty but school aged children was the most target population(28 studies). Family as a concept of client was used in 20 studies(9.8%) but most primary care provider was the mother. 3. In terms of research design, non-experimental design(83.5%) is the most and among them survey was 159 studies(77.6%). Qualitative research(23 studies) and experimental research(10 studies) methods were used relatively few. 4. In terms of the categories of concepts, 196 (61.4%) studies included the essentialistic concepts like stress and coping(20.4%), mothering role and child care(7.8%), health (5.6%), breast feeding(4.7%). 31 studies included problematic concepts like power-lessness, safety, obesity, pain, anxiety. And 65 studies included health-care experiential concepts like compliance, growth, hope, environment but relatively few. The findings of this study provide the evidence that research related problematic concept and health-care experiential concept should be conducted actively to improve the practice of child health nursing. Also to deeply understand the phenomena of client in field of child health nursing, interpretive research methods should be conducted actively, too.

Multidimensional scaling can be used to identify relationships among concepts, revealing the structure of the cognitive framework by measuring distances within perceptual maps. The current study sought to examine the relationships among concepts related to photosynthesis in 2,844 $3^{rd}-11^{th}$ grade science students. The questionnaire included items on 'location,' 'products,' 'reactants,' and 'environmental factors', presenting images related to each theme. Students provided responses corresponding to particular topics, and reported the extent to which the concept was related to the topic on a scale from 1 to 30. The survey results were as follows: first, students were not able to clearly distinguish between or understand the four main topics. Second, students organized their cognitive structures by closely associating related concepts after learning. Third, the presented concepts revealed a mixture of scientific and non-scientific concepts, suggesting that students needed to clearly distinguish the preconceptions through which they organized concepts, so that they are suitable for cognitive structures based on learning. Furthermore, non-scientific concepts within perceptions were consistently maintained throughout learning, affecting the proximity of scientific concepts.
Conception in learner's cognitive structure has a niche as species in ecosystems. The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of niche overlap of photosynthesis concept through instruction. The photosynthesis concepts were selected from literature review. Selected concepts were in 4 areas: Location of photosynthesis, reactants, products, and environmental factors. The subjects consisted 304 elementary students. The respondent marked the relevance between the presented concepts and each area on a scale of 1~30 points. The analysis of niche overlap in concepts was performed by changing in niche overlap graph, niche space size, and overlap index before and after instruction. The results are as follows. First, on the whole understanding level and relevance of the scientific concepts was increased through instruction as a result of learning. Second, elementary school students cognitive concepts in the form of chunking concepts through classification process. Based on the results, this study has the following suggestion. Students' conceptual ecologies and niche analyzed by this study will be used as material for development of instruction strategy.
The purpose of this study is to extract design concepts, especially in relation to light, as a part of extracting design concepts in architectural interior design. This study consists of two steps. Firstly, appropriate design concepts are extracted from various design characteristics. Secondly, these concepts are classified in the frame of other components of architectural space, as well as in the frame of the plastic characteristics of light. Various design characteristics were analyzed, those of which relating to the plastic character of space, namely, visual phenomenon. As a result of the analysis, 32 concepts were extracted. These concepts, in the frame of other components of architectural space (space, form, structure, opening of space, material, color, inside & outside relationship), were classified, as well as In the frame of the plastic character of Light (transparency, perception, direction, ornament). As the results of this research, the suggested design concepts will be a study material, available to the interior designers as well as students who want to utilize the organized study concepts.

Objectives: This pilot study was carried out with the purpose of suggesting a methodology on mapping and registering Korean medicinal material concepts at 2011AB of the UMLS. Methods: 411 medicinal material concepts were mapped to biomedical terminology within the metathesaurus of the UMLS. Based on the forms of listing on the UMLS and thesauri information, the medicinal material concepts were classified into three groups and mapped. Results: 76 concepts in Group 1 which English CUIs have Chinese AUIs were mapped considering scientific names and Chinese strings. 259 concepts in Group 2 that have CUIs in the form of 'botanical name/Chinese pinyin' were mapped with the information of Korean and Chinese Pharmacopoeias. Groups 3, 76 concepts of English names in the Korean Pharmacopoeia are matched considering their botanic names and used parts. Conclusion: This study suggested a methodology to map Korean medicinal material concepts to international standard terminology, which will help ensure interoperability and compatibility between traditional medicine terminology and the UMLS.
Even though fractions make up one of the most important concepts in the domain of numbers in elementary math, it is difficult to teach or learn them due to their different quantity concepts and notation methods from natural numbers and their various concepts. The didactic transposition of fractions is thus important, and there is a need to examine the didactic concepts of fractions used in the South Korean textbooks for its research. This study compared elementary math textbooks among South Korea, Taiwan, and China and investigated differences in the instructional time and order of fraction concepts in the textbooks according to their didactic concepts and also differences in the instructional methods according to quantitative concepts.
The purposes of this study were to investigate concepts of Korean and American elementary school pre-service teachers on combustion, and to compare the concepts of Korean pre-service teachers with those of American pre-service teachers. For this study, concept test on combustion was administered to 23 Korean and 18 American elementary school pre-service teachers. The test composed of 6 items: 'Definition of combustion', 'The reason why a candle in a glass bottle is blown out when the bottle was closed', 'The change of gases in the bottle when a candle burns in it', 'The combustion products of a candle', 'The combustion products of steel wool', and 'The combustion products of a substance'. The results showed that the rates of elementary school pre-service teachers who had scientific concepts on combustion were very low in both Korean and American pre-service teachers' groups, although they were a little different from items. However the rates of pre-service teachers who had partial concepts and misconceptions on combustion were high in two groups. The levels of Korean elementary school pre-service teachers' concepts were a little higher than those of American elementary school pre-service teachers' concepts. The contents and activities on combustion which are in Korean and American science textbooks seem to affect building up their concepts on combustion.
