  • An improved K-means document clustering method has been presented, where a concept vector is manipulated for each cluster on the basis of cosine similarity of text documents. The concept vectors are unit vectors that have been normalized on the n-dimensional sphere. Because the standard K-means method is sensitive to initial starting condition, our improvement focused on starting condition for estimating the modes of a distribution. The improved K-means clustering algorithm has been applied to a set of text documents, called Classic3, to test and prove efficiency and correctness of clustering result, and showed 7% improvements in its worst case.

  • There are three kinds of order of instruction in mathematics, that is, historical order, theoretical organization and lecturing organization-order. Simply speaking, each lecturing organization-order is a combination of two preceding orders. The problem is how to combine between them. In a recent paper, we concretely considered this problem for the case of the concept of angle. The present paper analogously discuss with the concept of vectors. To begin with, we investigate theoretical organization and historical order of the concept of vectors as materials for the construction of its lecturing organization-order. It enables us to establish 4 stages in historical order of the concept of vectors proper to its theoretical organization. As a consequence, we suggest several criteria and forms for constructing its lecturing organization-order.

  • The present paper considers how to teach mathematical concepts. In particular, we aim to a balanced, unified achievement for three elements of concept loaming such as concept understanding, computation and application through one's mathematical intuition. In order to do this, we classify concepts into three patterns, that is, intuitive concepts, logical concepts and formal concepts. Such classification is based on three kinds of philosophy of mathematics : intuitionism, logicism, fomalism. We provide a concrete, practical investigation with important nine concepts in theory of vectors from the viewpoint of three patterns of concepts. As a consequence, we suggest certain solutions for an effective concept learning in teaching theory of vectors.

  • In this paper, the concept of sampling vectors is introduced, and used for a simple realization of DSSs(distributed sample scramblers). In DSSs, if the sampling times of the scrambler state samples are not identical to their transmission times, samples are delayedtransmitted to the descrambler. and in this case the DSSs need additional memory elements storing the samples and additional clocks for informing their transmission times. The concept of sampling vectors helps move the sampling times of delayed samples to their transmission times, thus eliminating the additional memory elements and clocks in the DSSs. In the paper, the conditions on the synchronization of the scrambler and descrambler are derived for the DSS employing sampling vectors, and demonstrations are given on their applicaitons to cell-based ATM DSSs.

  • This paper presents a novel space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) to synthesize an arbitrary non-sinusoidal phase voltage. The key of the proposed method is that the switching vectors used to comprise the reference vectors in the ${\alpha}_1-{\beta}_1$ frame and the ${\alpha}_3-{\beta}_3$ frame are decoupled. In the ${\alpha}_1-{\beta}_1$ frame, the reference vector is comprised by near two large vectors. The corresponding vector comprised by the two vectors in the ${\alpha}_3-{\beta}_3$ frame is considered as a disturbance, which is restrained by close-loop control. In the ${\alpha}_3-{\beta}_3$ frame, there are two methods to comprise the reference vector. Method I is a near two middle vectors method. Method II uses near four vectors (two middle and two little vectors). The proposed SVPWM using decoupled switching vectors can guarantee a maximum modulation index in the ${\alpha}_1-{\beta}_1$ frame. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulated and experimental results under various operation conditions.

  • The Hotelling transform is based on statistical properties of an image. The principal uses of this transform are in data compression. The basic concept of the Hotelling transform is that the choice of basis vectors pointing the direction of maximum variance of the data. This property can be used for rotation normalization. Many objects of interest in pattern recognition applications can be easily standardized by performing a rotation normalization that aligns the coordinate axes with the axes of maximum variance of the pixels in the object. However, this transform can not be used to rotation normalization of color images directly. In this paper, we propose a new method for rotation normalization of color images based on the Hotelling transform. The Hotelling transform is performed to calculate basis vectors of each channel. Then the summation of vectors of all channels are processed. Rotation normalization is performed using the result of summation of vectors. Experimental results showed the proposed method can be used for rotation normalization of color images effectively.

  • In this article, we study the historical development of how the main concepts of linear algebra - matrices, vectors, and transformations - arise, are connected then integrated into a category. Also we study how linearity is recognized and integrated into algebraic and geometric viewpoint. Furthermore, we discuss, based on this, the role of linear algebra as a unifying concept in a school mathematics.

  • The basic concept underlying gene therapy is that human diseases may be treated by the transfer of genetics material into specific cells of a patient in order to correct or supplement defective genes responsible for disease development. There are several systems that can be used to transfer foreign genetic material into the human body. Both viral and non-viral vectors are developed and evaluated for delivering therapeutic genes. Viral vectors are biological systems derived from naturally evolved viruses capable of transferring their genetics materials into host cells. However, the limitations associated with viral vectors, in terms of their safety, particularly immunogenecity, and their limited capacity of transgenic materials, have encouraged researchers to increasingly focus on non-viral vectors as an alternative to viral vectors. Although non-viral vectors are less efficient than viral ones, they have the advantages of safety, simplicity of preparation and high gene encapsulation capability. This article reviews the most recent studies highlighting the advantages and the limitation of gene delivery systems focused on non-viral systems compared to viral systems.

  • 'Tangent' is one of the most important concepts in the middle and high school mathematics, especially in dealing with calculus. The concept of tangent in the current textbook consists of the ways which make use of discriminant or differentiation. These ways, however, do not present dynamic view points, that is, the concept of variation. In this paper, after applying 'Roberval's way of finding tangent using vectors in terms of kinematics to parabola, ellipse, circle, hyperbola, cycloid, hypocycloid and epicycloid, we will identify that this is the tangent of those curves. This trial is the educational link of mathematics and physics, and it will also suggest the appropriate example of applying vector. We will also help students to understand the tangent by connecting this method to the existing ones.

  • The substructure synthesis method(SSM) is developed for overcoming disadvantages of the Finite Element Method(FEM). The concept of the SSM is as follows. After dividing a whole structure into several substructures, every substructures are analyzed by the FEM or experiment. The whole structure is analyzed by using connecting condition and the results of substructures. The concept of the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) is based on the transfer of the nodal stiffness coefficients which are related to force vectors and displacement vectors at each node of analytical mode1. The superiority of the TSCM to the FEM in the computation accuracy, cost and convenience was confirmed by the numerical computation results. In this paper, the author suggests an efficient vibration analysis method of structures by using the TSCM and the SSM. The trust and the validity of the present method is demonstrated through the numerical results for computation models.
