In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object is computed using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. This paper presents a new image reconstruction algorithm based on the genetic algorithm (GA) via a two-step approach for the solution of the EIT inverse problem, in particular for the reconstruction of "static" images. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images in the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the modified Newton-Raphson algorithm at the expense of an increased computational burden.rden.
Positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used imaging modality for effective and accurate functional testing and medical diagnosis using radioactive isotopes. However, PET has difficulties in acquiring images with high image quality due to constraints such as the amount of radioactive isotopes injected into the patient, the detection time, the characteristics of the detector, and the patient's motion. In order to overcome this problem, we have succeeded to improve the image quality by using the dynamic image reconstruction method based on singular value decomposition. However, there is still some question about the characteristics of the proposed technique. In this study, the characteristics of reconstruction method based on singular value decomposition was estimated over computational simulation. As a result, we confirmed that the singular value decomposition based reconstruction technique distinguishes the images well when the signal - to - noise ratio of the input image is more than 20 decibels and the feature vector angle is more than 60 degrees. In addition, the proposed methode to estimate the characteristics of reconstruction technique can be applied to other spatio-temporal feature based dynamic image reconstruction techniques. The deduced conclusion of this study can be useful guideline to apply medical image into SVD based dynamic image reconstruction technique to improve the accuracy of medical diagnosis.
The present paper deals with the efficient computation of higher-order CFD methods for compressible flow using graphics processing units (GPU). The higher-order CFD methods, such as discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods and correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) methods, can realize arbitrary higher-order accuracy with compact stencil on unstructured mesh. However, they require much more computational costs compared to the widely used finite volume methods (FVM). Graphics processing unit, consisting of hundreds or thousands small cores, is apt to massive parallel computations of compressible flow based on the higher-order CFD methods and can reduce computational time greatly. Higher-order multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) is applied for the robust control of numerical oscillations around shock discontinuity and implemented efficiently on GPU. The program is written and optimized in CUDA library offered from NVIDIA. The whole algorithms are implemented to guarantee accurate and efficient computations for parallel programming on shared-memory model of GPU. The extensive numerical experiments validates that the GPU successfully accelerates computing compressible flow using higher-order method.

In this paper, we propose accurate lattice extraction of elemental image array and pre-processing methods in computational integral imaging. Pre-processing methods remove distortions and noises of the image. Such distortions occurred in pickup systems are rotational errors. Distortions will degrade the resolution of reconstructed images. To overcome this problem, we propose our methods for extraction of elemental image array and pre-processing methods. Also, we describe that distortions affect the high quality reconstruction. Optical and computational experiments indicate that reconstructed images applied our methods is better than reconstructed images unapplied our methods.

Background: Metabolic modeling has been an essential tool in metabolic reconstruction, which has dramatically advanced in the last decades as a part of systems biology. At present, the protocol for metabolic reconstruction has been systematically established, and it provides the basis for the analysis of complex systems, which has been limited in the past. Therefore, metabolic reconstruction can be adapted to analyze agricultural systems whose metabolic data has been accumulated recently. Purpose: The aim of this review is to suggest the suitability of metabolic modeling for understanding agricultural metabolic data and to encourage the potential use of this modeling in the field of agriculture. Review: We reviewed the procedure of metabolic reconstruction using computational modeling with applicable strategies and software tools. Additionally, we presented the initial attempts of metabolic reconstruction in the field of agriculture and proposed further applications.
Enhanced reconstruction of heavy occluded objects was represented using estimation of variance in computational integral imaging. The system is analyzed to extract information of enhanced reconstruction from an elemental images set. To obtain elemental images with enhanced resolution, low focus error, and large depth of focus, synthetic aperture integral imaging (SAII) utilizing a digital camera has been adopted. The focused areas of the reconstructed image are varied with the distance of the reconstruction plane. When an occluded object is occluded heavily, an occluded object can not be reconstructed by removing the occluding object. To obtain reconstruction of the occluded object by remedying the effect of heavy occlusion, the statistical technique has been adopted.
Compton imaging is often recognized as a potentially more valuable 3-D technique in nuclear medicine than conventional emission tomography. Due to inherent computational limitations, however, it has been of a difficult problem to reconstruct images with good accuracy. In this work we show that the row-action maximum likelihood algorithm (RAMLA), which have proven useful for conventional tomographic reconstruction, can also be applied to the problem of 3-D reconstruction of cone-beam projections from Compton scattered data. The major advantage of RAMLA is that it converges to a true maximum likelihood solution at an order of magnitude faster than the standard expectation maximiation (EM) algorithm. For our simulations, we first model a Compton camera system consisting of the three pairs of scatterer and absorber detectors placed at x-, y- and z-axes, and generate conical projection data using a software phantom. We then compare the quantitative performance of RAMLA and EM reconstructions in terms of the percentage error. The net conclusion based on our experimental results is that the RAMLA applied to Compton camera reconstruction significantly outperforms the EM algorithm in convergence rate; while computational costs of one iteration of RAMLA and EM are about the same, one iteration of RAMLA performs as well as 128 iterations of EM.
This paper addresses occluded object reconstruction and recognition with computational integral imaging (II). Integral imaging acquires and reconstructs target information in the three-dimensional (3D) space. The reconstruction is performed by averaging the intensities of the corresponding pixels. The distance to the object is estimated by minimizing the sum of the standard deviation of the pixels. We adopt principal component analysis (PCA) to classify occluded objects in the reconstruction space. The Euclidean distance is employed as a metric for decision making. Experimental and simulation results show that occluded targets are successfully classified by the proposed method.
A thermal-hydraulic code, named CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components. A two-fluid three-field model was used for steam-water two-phase flows. To obtain numerical solutions, the finite volume method was applied over unstructured cell-centered meshes. In steam-water two-phase flows, a phase change, i.e., evaporation or condensation, results in a great change in the flow field because of substantial density difference between liquid and vapor phases. Thus, two-phase flows are very sensitive to the local pressure distribution that determines the phase change. This in turn puts emphasis on the accurate evaluation of local pressure gradient. This paper presents a new reconstruction method to evaluate the pressure gradient at cell centers on unstructured meshes. The results of the new scheme for a simple test function, a gravity-driven cavity, and a wall boiling two-phase flow are compared with those of the previous schemes in the CUPID code.
The problem of fitting B-spline curves to planar point clouds is studied in this paper. A novel method is proposed to deal with the most challenging case where multiple intersecting curves or curves with self-intersection are necessary for shape representation. A method based on Delauney Triangulation of data points is developed to identify connected components which is also capable of removing outliers. A skeleton representation is utilized to represent the topological structure which is further used to create a weighted graph for deciding the merging of curve segments. Different to existing approaches which utilize local shape information near intersections, our method considers shape characteristics of curve segments in a larger scope and is thus capable of giving more satisfactory results. By fitting each group of data points with a B-spline curve, we solve the problems of curve structure reconstruction from point clouds, as well as the vectorization of simple line drawing images by drawing lines reconstruction.
