The early-age cracks have bad effects on the diffusion movement of chloride ions and oxygen. In this study, a corrosion analysis algorithm for cracked concrete is proposed to examine the influence of early-age cracks on corrosion of RC structures. For different environmental exposure conditions of RC structures, a corrosion model is combined with models for activation polarization and concentration polarization. From the finite element corrosion analysis using the proposed algorithm and the models, the effects of early-age cracks to the corrosion is simulated.

Recently, the durability of concrete structures has received great attention as the number of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants, increases continuously. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the effects of combined deterioration due to chlorides and sulfates in concrete structures. To this end, comprehensive experimental program has been set up to observe the chloride penetration behavior for various test series. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced for the case of combined attack than the case of single chloride attack. The surface chloride content is found to increase with time and the diffusion coefficient for chloride is found to decrease with time. The prediction equations for surface chloride content and diffusion coefficient were proposed according to test results. The equations for chloride penetration considering the time-dependent diffusion coefficients and surface chlorides were also suggested. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of chlorides and high concentration sulfates but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.
This study was focused on the risk assessment of whether radiofrequency electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phone is cytogenetically toxic or not. We conducted the effects of 835-MHz electromagnetic field (EMF) on DNA strand breaks in mouse thymic lymphoma L5178Y $Tk^{+/1-}$ cells using alkaline comet assay. EMF frequency 835-MHz we chosen is one of the most popular communication frequency bands in Korean code-division multiple-access (CDMA) mobile phone system. The cells were exposed to 835-MHz EMF alone or 835-MHz EMF combined with cyclophosamide(CPA) or 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) at specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4.0 W $kg^{-l}$ for 24 and 48hrs. DNA damage expressed as tail moment was increased more than two-fold after exposure to 835-MHz EMF for 24 and 48hr. In particular, CPA for 48hr and 4NQO for 24 hr enhanced notably the tail moment to 9-fold and 16-fold in the presence of 835-MHz EMF, respectively, compared to each single treatment. From these results, it appears that exposure to CDMA-mobile phone radiation at 835-MHz frequency may potentiate DNA strand breaks of mouse thymic lymphoma L5178Y $Tk^{+/1-}$;cells under the defined conditions of this study.

Objectives: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a major cause of death in Korea and known to result from several occupational factors. This study attempted to estimate the current magnitude of IHD mortality due to occupational factors in Korea. Methods: After selecting occupational risk factors by literature investigation, we calculated attributable fractions (AFs) from relative risks and exposure data for each factor. Relative risks were estimated using meta-analysis based on published research. Exposure data were collected from the 2006 Survey of Korean Working Conditions. Finally, we estimated 2006 occupation-related IHD mortality. Results: For the factors considered, we estimated the following relative risks: noise 1.06, environmental tobacco smoke 1.19 (men) and 1.22 (women), shift work 1.12, and low job control 1.15 (men) and 1.08 (women). Combined AFs of those factors in the IHD were estimated at 9.29% (0.3-18.51%) in men and 5.78% (-7.05-19.15%) in women. Based on these fractions, Korea's 2006 death toll from occupational IHD between the age of 15 and 69 was calculated at 353 in men (total 3,804) and 72 in women (total 1,246). Conclusion: We estimated occupational IHD mortality of Korea with updated data and more relevant evidence. Despite the efforts to obtain reliable estimates, there were many assumptions and limitations that must be overcome. Future research based on more precise design and reliable evidence is required for more accurate estimates.
From the study on the chest radiologic equipments and situations of university hospitals, general hospitals, and radiologic clinics located in Seoul area and Choong-cheong province, the author got conclusions as follows : 1. The rectfication methods of the equipments were employing mainly single or three-phase full wave, and 78% of the examined were using single phase full wave. 2. The focal sizes in case of small focus were less than 1.0mm in chest-only use, and more than 1.0mm in 81% of combined use. The focal sizes in case of large focus were more than 1.6mm in 78% of the total. 3. Maximum ratings of x-ray tubes were 47% at 125 kVp maximum tube voltage and 41% at 150kVp. The maximum tube currentes higher than 500mA were shown in 72% of all the examined. And the maximum exposure time was the range of 5-8sec. 4. Grid was not used in the 66% of all the hospitals. Equipment for chest-only was employing 10:1 grid ratio and the 2.0-2.9mmAl of total filtration formed 38% of all the examined. 5. In the processing time of exposed film, 68% of all was 90sec, and only 20% of all the examined used optimum developing temperature according to this condition. 6. In the radiographic conditions, more than 50% used low tube voltages lower than 70 kVp and only 3% of all the equipments used high tube voltages higher than 100 kVp. The 46.9% of all the equipments 300mA, and 53% of all used shorter exposure time less than 1/20(0.05) sec. 7. In the monthly average number of radiographs, 44% of all was x-ray the radiographs.
The ubiquitin-proteasome mediated protein degradation pathway plays an important role in regulating both cell proliferation and cell death. Proteasome inhibitors are well known to induce apoptosis in various human cancer cell lines. We investigated the effect of combined treatment with proteasome inhibitor and TRAIL, and a possible mechanism of the enhancing apoptosis by the both treatment, on TRAIL-resistant non-small cell lung cancer. A549 cells were exposed to the N-Acetyl-Leu-Leu-Norleu-al (ALLN) as a proteasome inhibitor and then treated with recombinant TRAIL protein. In A549 cells under proteasome inhibition conditions by pretreatment with ALLN, TRAIL treatment significantly decreased cell viability compared to that ALLN and TRAIL alone treatment. Also, the both treatment induced cell damage through DNA fragmentation and p53 expression. In addition, the combined treatment of both markedly increased caspase-8 activation, especially the exposure for 2 h, and Bax expression and induced the dissipation of mitochondrial transmembrane potential in A549 cells. Taken together, these findings showed that proteasome inhibition by ALLN enhanced TRAIL-induced apoptosis via DNA degradation by activated P53 and mitochondrial transmembrane potential loss by caspase-8 activation and bax expression. Therefore, our results suggest that proteasome inhibitor may be used a very effectively chemotherapeutic agent for the tumor treatment, especially TRAIL-resistant tumor cell.

In this work, we demonstrated a facile and effective method for deposition of metal tetraphenylporphyrin (MTPP) thin film by a combined a thermal evaporation (TE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). For the deposition of Zn-TPP thin film, Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and diethyl zinc (DEZ) were used as organic and inorganic materials, respectively. Optimum conditions for the deposition of Zn-TPP thin film were established systematically: (1) the exposure time of DEZ as inorganic precursor and (2) the substrate temperature were adjusted, respectively. As a result, we verified that the surface reaction between organic semiconductor (TPP) and metal atom (Zn) was ALD process. In addition, we calculated activation energy by using Arrhenius equation for the substrate temperature versus area change rate of pyrrolic nitrogen. The surface and interface reactions between TPP with Zn were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. These results show a facile and well-controllable fabrication technique for the metal-organic thin film for future electronic applications.
Geopolymer is a sustainable concrete, replaces traditional cement concrete using alternative sustainable construction materials as binders and alkaline solution as alkaline activator. This paper presents the strength characteristics of geopolymer concrete (GPC) developed with fly ash and GGBS as binders, combined Sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution as alkaline activators. The parameters considered in this research work are proportions of fly ash and GGBS (70-30 and 50-50), curing conditions (Outdoor curing and oven curing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours), two grades of concrete (GPC20 and GPC50). The mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength along with durability characteristics were determined. For studying the durability characteristics of geopolymer concrete 5% $H_2SO_4$ solutions was used and the specimens were immersed up to an exposure period of 56 days. The main parameters considered in this study were Acid Mass Loss Factor (AMLF), Acid Strength Loss Factor (ASLF) and products of degradation. The results conclude that GPC with sufficient strength can be developed even under Outdoor curing using fly ash and GGBS combination i.e., without the need for any heat curing.

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the construction of super high-rise buildings. From the prior art, various procedures and devices for surveys during and after the phase of erection of a high-rise building are known. High-rise buildings are subject to strong external tilt effects caused, for instance, by wind pressures, unilateral thermal effects by exposure to sunlight, and unilateral loads. Such effects are a particular challenge in the phase of construction of a high-rise building, in as much as the high-rise building under construction is also subject to tilt effects, and will at least temporarily lose its - as a rule exactly vertical - alignment. Yet construction should progress in such a way that the building is aligned as planned, and particularly so in the vertical, when returning into an un-tilted basic state. It is essential that a straight element be constructed that theoretically, even when moving around its design centre point due to varying loads, would have an exactly vertical alignment when all biasing conditions are neutralised. Because of differential raft settlement, differential concrete shortening, and construction tolerances, this ideal situation will rarely be achieved. This paper describes a procedure developed by the authors using GPS observations combined with a network of precision inclination sensor to provide reliable coordinated points at the top of the worldwide highest-rise building under construction in Dubai.
