  • Science cultures in the dimension of social interaction must be correlated with science cultures or science literacy in the dimension of psychological interaction. In order to develop a mature science culture, it must be assumed 1) that a science culture in a society ran be evaluated and 2) that we have to set up the criteria for evaluating it. This paper, based on the assumptions, makes an attempt to analyze the concept of science literacy underlying the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) conducted by OECD. The analyses are driven by the questions such as 'which philosophical backgrounds are absorbed into the concept of PISA' science literacy?' and 'What suggestions can be found with respect to the goal of enhancing the science culture?' In conclusion, the science literacy in PISA reflects the elements proposed by logical empiricism, naturalized philosophy of science, and social constructivism, which are being incorporated by the 'collaboration research program' conducted by the newly-emerging interdisciplinary field of 'science of science.' Finally, some further suggestions are added to the analyses to pursue more positive directions to induce mature science cultures in our society.

  • According to the Korean government's Long-term Space Development Plan 2040, "Creative space science research" is included in a statement to investigate the origin and evolution of the universe by conducting a series of Korean space telescope missions: launch of space telescopes on a small satellite and an international collaboration explorer by 2020, a mid-size domestic space telescope by 2030, and a large size Korea leading international space telescope by 2040. We studied the feasibility of the future Korean Space Telescope (KST) for a mid-size domestic satellite platform. In order to pursue the uniqueness of the science program, we consider a wide range of observing wavelength (0.2um ~ 2.0um) with a spectral resolution of R~6 in the NUV and optical bands, and R~30 for NIR, utilizing an off-axis TMS(Three Mirror System) optics with a wide field of view ($2{\times}4$ degrees) which is optimized for ultra-low surface brightness sources. The main science goals of the mission include investigations of the galaxy formation, cosmic web, and the cosmic background radiation in the NUV-NIR regions. In this paper, we present the science cases and several technical challenges to be resolved along with the future milestones for the success of the KST mission.

  • This study investigates the examples of artistic intervention especially on the surface of architecture as a meeting place of art and architecture. Artistic intervention demonstrates the possibilities for the meaningful integration of arts into architectural spaces. This study summarizes the characteristics of artistic intervention on the surfaces of architectures as follow; first, the artistic intervention is applied to the broad ranges of designs including public art, architectural design and sign design that establish identities and unique characters to the spaces. Second, the artistic intervention on the surfaces is conducted by the participation of the various fields of artists, i.e. painters, installation artists, graphic designers and landscape designers. The artistic intervention is also conducted by individual collaboration between artists and architects as well as by the forms of public art of art-in-architecture program. Third, the artistic intervention on the surfaces is expressed using the complex combination of images, colors, patterns, and texts. They are applied to enhance the aesthetic and symbolic characters of buildings in public arts, to improve the visual characters of architectural design with graphics, colors, and patterns, as well as to increase communication skills and cognitive effects of sign design with letters and colors on walls and floor surfaces. Fourth, the artistic intervention is also applied on the surfaces to encourage people to communicate historic and symbolic meanings related to the locations and functions. Thus, graphics on the architectural surfaces could provide a public space, with which people could share common feeling on public arts. As a conclusion, the study finds that artistic intervention either as artworks or as elements of architectural design can not only enhance the aesthetic quality of architectural space but also expand the techniques of design representation. In addition, the artistic intervention can contribute to create a new realm of design where artists and architects work together to enrich our surroundings.

  • AIDS and the spectrum of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) infections present a monumental challenge to the health of the Korean public. In response to this special challenge, I think public education and voluntary behavior changes are the most effective measures to fight the spread of the disease. Adolescents represent a critical risk group for prevention and intervention programming. Research indicates sexually active adolescents, homosexual contact, illicit drug use are an gradually increasing. These characteristically adolescent risk-taking behaviors suggest the need for schools and communities to mobilize intervention strategies. Schools are highly efficient ways to reach a majority of young people in Korea with HIV prevention programs. These programs include substantial attention to sexual and drug use behaviors with the long term objective of a multidimensional school health program. Information resulting from risk behavior surveillance activities and guidance on school health curricula is particularly useful. What is needed for adolescents is a revamping of education to give students the critical thinking and analytic skills that allow them to apply knowledge, make decisions, and think independently. The best HIV preventive education provides young people with opportunities to learn and practice just those skills. In the early stages of HIV education were focused solely on information. Providing information is easy but unfortunately, behavior change is not that simple to activate. Information must be combined with values exploration and skilly building, including responsible decision making, negotiation, refusal, and critical thinking skills. The same knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for effective HIV prevention also prevent or reduce other risks, including other sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and alcohol or other drug use. The role of other youth serving organizations in HIV prevention is also important: parental and youth involvement is needed; it's important to presidential and governament leadership is essential to prevention education; promote integrated adolescent programs, to enhance health and education sector collaboration; and of course, we need to expand research on adolescent health and engage the media in health promotion. Among these changes, a school-based systematic health education of AIDS is certainly one of the essentials.

  • Teaching practicum plays a significant role in teacher education program because it provides pre-service teachers with an opportunity to apply what they have learned to the actual teaching contexts. As such, it needs to be conducted in terms of close collaboration between university and school. Given that, in a mathematics methods course the prospective teachers in this study had an opportunity to discuss mathematics lessons they had implemented during their teaching practicum. This paper analyzed in what ways prospective teachers' comments on elementary mathematics instruction were changed through this experience. The results of this study showed that in late comment the teachers tended to focus more on mathematical discourse, consider not only the teacher of the lesson but also students, and suggest alternative approaches on the classroom events they had noticed. It is noticeable that the results analyzed by researchers were consistent with prospective teachers' self-assessment. Building on these results, this paper provides implications of teacher preparation programs to enhance prospective teachers' ability to analyze elementary mathematics lessons.

  • The Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) accident provides unique full scale data, thus providing opportunities to check the capability of codes to model overall plant behavior and to perform a spectrum of sensitivity and uncertainty calculations. As part of the TMI-2 analysis benchmark exercise sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD NEA), several member countries are continuing to improve their system analysis codes using the TMI-2 data. The Republic of Korea joined this benchmark exercise in November 2005. Seoul National University has analyzed the TMI-2 accident as well as the currently proposed alternative scenario along with a sensitivity study using the Modular Accident Analysis Program Version 4.03 (MAAP4.03) code in collaboration with the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company. Two input files are required to simulate the TMI-2 accident with MAAP4: the parameter file and an input deck. The user inputs various parameters, such as volumes or masses, for each component. The parameter file contains the information on TMI-2 relevant to the plant geometry, system performance, controls, and initial conditions used to perform these benchmark calculations. The input deck defines the operator actions and boundary conditions during the course of the accident. The TMI-2 accident analysis provided good estimates of the accident output data compared with the OECD TMI-2 standard reference. The alternative scenario has proposed the initial event as a loss of main feed water and a small break on the hot leg. Analysis is in progress along with a sensitivity study concerning the break size and elevation.

  • Semiotics studies the structures and systems of all signs related to human life, thus being capable of analyzing games. "Playing games" can be deemed as an act of reading or interpreting games semiotically, which makes game producers "senders," games "texts," gamers "receivers," and gamers playing games "contexts." Since most games are in the multi-variable narrative format, however, it is not a frequent case that gamers interpret games in the ways intended by producers. This study thus set out to analyze and interpret the console game (2001) remembered as the same evaluation by many gamers in the way intended by the producer. For analysis, the study defined its story program by analyzing the plot and sequence. For semantic analysis, the study applied the Actor Model and the Semiotic Square Model to interpret . The process identified such codes as confrontation, assistance, collaboration, and control and confirmed that Ico and Yorda, non-subject characters, were transforming into subject ones. That is, tells a story of the main characters that used to lead a non-subject life earning lives of their own.
