Also, stretchy fabrics were ranked first in awareness, the number of wearing times, and satisfaction of comfort functional fabrics. More than 30% of silver generation have fifteen items out of 36 functional clothes. Second, in analysis of awareness by gender on functional clothing products, women were more aware of health/safety-oriented fabrics than men were. Otherwise, men had more knowledge about the water-related properties of functional fabrics than women have, such as water/moisture absorptive and water-repellent/vapor permeable fabrics. While women have more indoor casual wear, men had more active sportswear. Also, women expressed a strong preference to the stretchy function of fabrics.

  • This study is aimed to examine the wearing, the clothing satisfaction and the actual purchase conditions of dance sportswear for females in their 20s~50s in order to provide a basic resource for the development of motion functionality and emotionally suitable dance sportswear. As a result, females in their 50s are considered with higher percentages of participation and more than half of them participated in the Latin American sports dance. As for the frequency of activities per week, 1~2 times per week is the largest portion with the main purpose of health and diet for all age levels. Participants with more than 3 years of experience have more proper clothing as compared with those less than 1 year of experience. The most inconvenient point is the rolling up of the upper clothes in the case for two pieces of clothing. The purchase frequency of dance sportswear is once or twice per year which shows no differences for all age levels and the repurchase period is considered to be long. As for price, items less than 50,000 won hold the highest portion which meant that they preferred low priced clothing. When they purchase dance sportswear, more than 80% of the participants consider design and materials as the most important factors.

  • Proper consumer segmentation is receiving more attention from industry professionals as markets become more diverse and consumer-centered. Researchers have recognized the limitations of the traditional cluster analysis technique and this research study analyzes market segmentation using Mixture-model or latent-class segmentation. This study used a questionnaire to determine the characteristics of clothing shoppers using a new technique that proved its superiority over traditional techniques. Questions included items measuring fashion shopping behavior, store choice criteria, apparel consumption styles, price perception by product type, and demographic characteristics. Data were collected from 1074 males and females in their 20s and 30s through an online survey. SPSS 16.0 and Latent GOLD 4.0 were used to analyze the data. The ideal typology of clothing shoppers using the Mixture-model were: 'brand loyalty orientated group', 'group of conservative late 30s', 'group of pleasure-emotion early 20s', 'value oriented consumer product with high-income group', 'group of eco/symbol oriented consumer', and 'group of utility/goal oriented male consumer'. This study showed differences in fashion product purchasing behavior by conducting market segmentation for clothing shoppers using the Mixture-model.

  • This study investigates the influence of social desirability to questionnaire response and data analysis in order to identify the need for social desirability control in clothing consumer research. A questionnaire measuring social desirability, social face sensitivity, clothing shopping behavior, and demographic characteristics was developed. Responses of 234 respondents were analyzed using factor analysis, simple regression analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, descriptive analysis, and Cronbach's alpha analysis. The results were as follow. First, respondents were influenced by social desirability when they responded to items measuring other-conscious social face. Second, the result of regression analysis (that the independent variable was social formality) was less influenced by social desirability control because the influence of social desirability to social formality was insignificant. Conversely, the result of regression analysis (that the independent variable was other-conscious social face) was more influenced by social desirability control because the influence of social desirability to other-conscious social face was significant. This study is an initial study that notices the need for social desirability control in clothing consumer research.

  • This study aims to discuss what changes Korean clothing companies and manufacturers have undergone with production facilities moving abroad due to offshore outsourcing and examine what conditions the clothing manufacturers are facing and how the clothing companies recognize those manufacturers. For these purposes, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 firms with annual production capacity of more than 200,000 pieces among clothing brands for the domestic market, clothing exporters and promotion agencies. Those interviewed firms were the companies who were found to produce more than 200,000 pieces of clothing per year, and the interview-based survey was conducted from December 18, 2008 to January 30, 2009. The key findings from this study are as follows; first, a high percentage of interviewed firms were producing only a small number of items in Korea with a large part of their production line transferred abroad or outsourcing all of their production abroad only with their headquarters in Korea. Second, many were employing contractors rather than their own factories. Third, when asked about the wage levels of clothing manufacturers, many of the clothing companies gave responses such as: 'They are just our contractor, so we respect their decision,' 'We don't know because it's none of our business,' or 'We don't know at all.' Fourth, when asked about the work environment of clothing manufacturers, the clothing companies gave responses such as: 'We know in part,' 'To our knowledge, they conform to the Labor Standards Law,' or 'We don't know at all.' Fifth, the production line of clothing manufacturers featured straight-line systems, specialization, pairing and compounding/mixing. Sixth, it was found that clothing companies had interest in mass customization but their preparations were not satisfactory.

  • This study investigates the wearing behavior and athleisure wear design preferences of women in their twenties as related to the design development of athleisure wear. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 185 women in their 20s. The survey was conducted from September to October 2016. Questionnaire items consisted of respondents' general items, athleisure wear and preference related items, and athleisure wear purchase related items. We collected 185 questionnaires from participants; subsequently, 169 were used as analytical data (except for incomplete questionnaires). The results of the study are as follows. Fit and wear comfort was the most important factor in the selection of athleisure wear. As a result of investigating the popularity of the athletic wear brand, the preference for the total sportswear brand was higher than the professional athletic wear brand. When the preferred colors were examined, the achromatic colors were ranked higher than chromatic colors. An examination of the preferred designs according to items indicated that the bra top preferred the 'U' shaped front plate and the 'Y' base basic type; in addition, T-shirts with the round neckline and the 1/4 length sleeves were preferred as tops. Leggings preferred long length type. It is necessary to develop a brand that matches the preference of the twenties' consumers by adjusting the aged target that can avoid the overheated competition and develop a niche market.
