This study was undertaken as a useful material not only to understand the clothing behaviors and the personal variables (age, education, occupation, yearly clothing expenses, weight, and persons who influence on one's choice of clothes) of the middle-aged women in Seoul, Korea but to lend itself to other uses concerning attitudes toward clothing. For the measurement of the attitudes toward specified activities related to clothing use, attitude method by Mary F. Pasnak (1968) was reworded and modified for use with the sample for this study. Analysis of the data revealed that the clothing behaviors of 450 women 30 to 59 years of age made a significant difference according to the personal variables. First, women in thirties showed the most positive clothing attitude of the three age groups. The younger age groups were positively related to relief from boredom through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude among eight attitudes related to clothing. Second, the positiveness of relief from boredom through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude increased in proportion to the education level. On the other hand, dressing for self was negatively related to the level of education. Third, a significant relationship was found between the amount of the clothing expenses and dressing for others, tactual pleasure through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude. Among the personal variables of the middle-aged women, age, the educational level, and the clothing expenses have a relationship with the clothing behaviors, while job, weight, and the persons who influence on one's choice of clothes have no relationship. The extensive interpretation on the result of this study will have to be taken with deliberation. For the more practical material researches on the clothing behaviors of the middle-aged women should be continued steadily in every possible way.
The purpose of this research were to identify the differences in clothing behaviors and psychological characteristics ill relation to age and residence and to identify the relative effects of Korean female adolescent's psychological characteristics on the clothing behaviors. The instruments measuring 9 psychological characteristics-adolescent egocentrism, social and general self-efficacy, public and private self-consciousness, boredom susceptibility, optimal stimulation level, body attitudes-were adapted from previous studies. Clothing behavior measurements were developed based on the pilot study results or adapted from previous studies. The data. collected from 2284 nationwide sample of Korean female adolescents(early, middle, late) was analyzed by frequency, two-way ANOVA, and LISREL confirmatory factor analysis. Clothing behavior were factor analyzed and 6 factors were identified: dressing for others. conformity to peers, clothing interest, self-expression, psychological dependence and clothing exhibition. Effects of age were dominant in 6 out of 9 psychological characteristics and five clothing behavior factors except conformity to peers. Dominant main effect of residence was found oかy in boredom susceptibility. From the results of LISREL, adolescent egocentrism, public self-consciousness and sensation seeking tendency were found to be the most influential psychological characteristics of female adolescents'clothing behaviors.
Teenagers were apt to be influenced by their teachers in every respect and were greatly affected by the clothing behaviours of teachers to whom they paid their respect. From this point, this study was aimed at explaining of the mutual relations between the teachers' clothing behaviors and the students' responses, in view of the fact that the teachers' clothing behaviors had a great influence on the students' characters and their will to study. Clothing behaviors were assessed with 15 items, selected from the instruments of preceding studies and modified by the factors dealing with modesty, fashion and clothing satisfaction. The questionaires were composed of two major categories; the first was about teachers' clothing behaviors and attitudes, and the second the interests in learning and school life. The subjects of this study included students in primary schools, middle schools and high schools located in the Incheon and Kimpo area, totaling 1,269 boys and girls. The data were analyzed statistically by t-test, F-test, χ\sup 2\-test, Duncan test, and regression analysis. RESULTS 1. The students' responses to the teachers' clothing behaviors were different according to grade years, sex and area. a) As to the differences in responses between grade years, the lower grade years showed higher interest in modesty and clothing satisfaction, while the higher grade years in fashion. However, they don't like the teachers to take the lead in fashion. b) As to the differences in responses between boys and girls, girls took much higher interest in modesty and fashion. In respect to clothing satisfaction, girls showed a little more interest, though there were no remarkable differences. c) As to the differences in responses between areas, the students in rural area showed higher interests in modesty. As to fashion and clothing satisfaction, the showed higher interests in modesty. As to fashion and clothing satisfaction, the students in urban areas had more interests in fashion, while the students in rural areas in clothing satisfaction, though there wee not remarkable difference. 2. In students' responses to the teachers' clothing behaviors dependent variables-modesty, fashion and satisfaction-can explain clothing behaviors to such an extent that modesty can be explained by 4.7% in the order of the grade years, sex and area, fashion by 13% in the grade years and sex, and satisfaction by 3% in the grade years respectively. 3. The students who were more interested in learning and school life were more satisfied with the teachers' clothing behaviors, made more of their modesty and cared less about their fashion.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferred clothing images and clothing behaviors on personality types. Personality types were applied using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI). Clothing image preferences were measured using 28 adjectives of 5-point scales. The data were collected from 101 female using questionnaire to prefer on clothing images, consumer information sources and retail store types. The data analysed with crosstab analysis, t-test, MDS. Extroversion and Introversion had significant difference in casual, sporty, fresh, youthful, western, and simple more than introversion types. Sensing and intuition had significant difference in feminine and strong image. Sensing types were significantly evaluated feminine style more than intuition types. Thinking types were significantly evaluated simple image more than feeling types. Judging and perceiving had significant difference in graceful, lofty, and strong image. Judging types were significantly evaluated graceful and lofty style more than perceiving types.
The elderly are faced with unique problems in regard to their clothing life, which require solutions from various perspectives. Given these facts, this study was aimed at reviewing and comparing the clothing behaviors of elderly people in order to provide some basic data which apparel businesses targeting the elderly might find useful. The elderly people aged 55 and older and living in Seoul were sampled at random for a survey. The survey used the methods of interview and self-administered questionnaire. 418 questionnaires were distributed to women, and 504 to men. The collected data were processed using SPSS/PC for factor analysis, correlation, single-factor ANOVA and T-test. The results of the survey can be summarized as follows ; 1. Among 8 factors determining the clothing behaviors of elderly people, the importance of clothes and manageability of clothes scored highest on average, while conformity with one's peers scored lowest. 2. The clothing behaviors of elderly people differed significantly depending on their demographic variables. 3. The level of satisfaction with one's life and appearance differed significantly depending on their demographic variables. 4. Clothing behaviors of elderly people were closely correlated with their level of satisfaction with their life and appearance.
The purpose of this study was to analyze potential effects of Koreans' ultraviolet risk awareness and appearance management on their UV protective behaviors in daily life and outdoor activities, and was to investigate in their awareness of UV-protective clothing and their purchase attitudes toward anti-UV protective clothing. To meet the above goals, we have surveyed a total of 262 participants(male and female) residing in Chungcheong province. Findings were as following: As a part of ultraviolet-protective behaviors, it was found that the respondents often relied on applying sun-block cream or shady place before exposition to sunlight. Particularly, it was notable that 30's or older group was more proactive in UV protective behaviors than younger group below 30 years old. There were significant correlations among the respondents' UV protective behaviors, their awareness of anti-UV clothing and their purchase attitudes to anti-UV clothing. Also, there were also significant correlations among their UV-protective means for outdoor activities. That is, more favorable awareness about anti-UV clothing they have is associated with their more active attitudes to purchasing anti-UV clothing and taking anti-sunlight behaviors. It was found that the number of respondents who used cosmetics for outdoor activities was more than that of respondents who used clothing to protect their body from ultraviolet ray. Hence, it will be necessary for follow-up studies to focus on the development and promotion of anti-UV clothing.
The purposes of this study were to investigate Chinese female consumers' shopping orientation and clothing shopping behaviors on the internet and to find the differences in internet shopping behaviors of consumer groups segmented by clothing shopping orientation. The subjects were 417 women in their 20s and 30s from the Gillim Province, China. The research method was a survey, and the questionnaire consisted of a clothing shopping orientation subscale, clothing, their shopping behaviors via the internet, and the subjects' demographic characteristics. For data analysis, a frequency analysis, a cross-tab analysis, a factor analysis, a cluster analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test were performed. The results of this study were as follows. The clothing shopping orientation was derived using five factors (trend pursuit, pleasure pursuit, brand pursuit, economic pursuit, and convenience pursuit). Chinese female consumers were classified into three groups (hedonic group, ambivalent group, and practical group) by clothing shopping orientation. These three groups showed many significant differences in their clothing shopping behaviors on the internet. The hedonic group preferred the specialty and cross-border shopping malls, and considered product quality and trend as their main purchase motives. The ambivalent group considered the convenience of the purchase and trend as important motives as compared to the other groups, and they use more various product selection criteria. The practical group considered low price and convenience and the search simplicity of various products as major purchase motives. In addition, the hedonic and ambivalent groups had a higher purchase satisfaction and purchase intention from internet shopping than the practical group. This study suggested that clothing shopping orientation is one of the useful segmentation variables and fashion marketers needed to establish differentiated marketing strategies for each consumer group that is segmented by clothing shopping orientation.
This study was carried out to offer basic research data to increase rural housewife's clothing management ability and to guide their behaviors clothing- related reasonably. For this purpose, the interview-investigation by the questionnaire was conducted as the samples of 500 housewives under 60 at 8 villages located in Seoul, Gwangju and Daegu and 8 villages located in some rural communities we randomly extracted. This questionnaire was made up the standardized measuring scales of clothing management behaviors and related variables. As a result, in a part of storage and disposal the rural housewife got 3.68 and 3.16, whereas the urban housewife got 3.59 and 3.03, respectively, indicating a significant difference, which meant that the rural housewife managed those of clothing better than the urban housewife. Generally, rural wives were better in doings in the part of management, storage, disposal, than urban wives. They, however, knew the knowledge of clothing less than urban wives, evaluated the importance of clothing lower and applied clothing-related mass media to their life lower. Therefore, the rural wives need educational guides and materials for improving of the clothing behaviors because they are older and lower education lever than urban wives and they have a little information, too.
The purposes of this study were,1) to examine the clothing purchase behaviors of the elderly, and 2) to investigate the relationships of clothing purchase behaviors, information source, service quality and clothing buying motive, which may provide insights related to the silver market. Data were obtained for women in their 50's and 60's women living in Busan (N=285), and analyzed using to factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, ANOVA and Duncan test. The ostentation group and economical groups attached more importance to Facilities Service and Policy Service in service quality, was higher than the utility group. The Iimplications and drawn from the study results for the information will be useful to consumer behavior researchers and retailers of the silver market.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of clothing values, self-perceived physical attractiveness on sensuous clothing behavior(see-through, body emphasis, body exposure, skinny), and also to figure out if any causal relationships existed among variables and whether demographic variables affected these relationships. For data collection, a questionnaire was administrated to 500 female college students in Gwangju City, Korea. The results were summarized as follows. First, clothing values were divided into six factors: religious clothing value, political clothing value, exploratory clothing value, social clothing value, economic clothing value, aesthetic clothing value. Sensuous clothing behaviors were divided into four factors: see-through, body emphasis, body exposure, skinny. Overall clothing values had positive effects on sensuous clothing behaviors. Second, self-perceived physical attractiveness turned out to have significant effects on overall sensuous clothing behaviors. Third, clothing values turned out to have significant effects on overall self-perceived physical attractiveness. This study confirmed that clothing values and self-perceived physical attractiveness turned out to have significant effects on sensuous clothing behavior.
