  • The objective of this study was to develop a new technique to control crown form of Hiscus syriacus to be used for an upright street tree with a single stem. Fertilization and raising the clear-bole length were the main treatments to compare the diameter and height growth of this species. The trees maintained with clear-bole length of 100, 150, and 200cm showed diameter growth of 15.7. 13.8, and 10.8mm, respectively, indicating the reduced diameter growth of trees with increasing clear-bole length, which is known as a typical characteristics in tending trees in silviculture. The effects of fertilization was not shown in this study. At the end of the two-year study from 1999 to 2,000, optimum diameter growth was obtained with the treatments of clear-bole length of 80-120cm, or 121-150cm. It is concluded that height and clear-bole length should be considered first in raising Hibiscus syriacus for street trees. Further study may be needed to obtain the effects of fertilization and raising the clear-bole length on uprightness of this species.

  • Taking an opportunity of the application of clearcutting method, 140 red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) trees grown at Chon-nam province, the southern part of South Korea, were fellen and the tree height, clear-bole length, D.B.H. diameter at base(0.2m above from the ground line) and the length of the longest branch were measured. The correlation between factors mentioned were analysed. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The correlation between crown length and tree height (r=0.821) was sinificant. 2. The correlation between the diameter at base and D.B.H. was highly significant (r=0.961). D.B.H. can be calculated from multiplying the diameter at base by 0.88. 3. A weak relation between D.B.H and tree height was abserved. 4. The positive correlation between tree height and clear-bole-length was calculated, but it was not sharp between D.B.H. and the length of the longest branch. 5. The height, basal area, D.B.H. and volume increment by tree class calculated from the data of the stem analysis are presented (Tab. 3~10).

  • This study was carried out to identify the variation of culm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides associated with attitudinal gradient in Mt. Jiri. The results obtained were summarized as follows : It was estimated that the average temperature at the altitude of 400 meters of Mt. Jiri was $12^{\circ}C$ which was closely associated with the horizontal distributions. It was observed that frequency distribution of the culm height, D.E.H. and clear length from the altitude of 200 meters to 400 meters shown at higher than that from 500 meters to 600 meters, and that frequency of clear length/culm height showed about equal for both altitude ranges. In the case of culm height, D.E.H. and clear length/culm height, coefficients of variation ranged from 15 percent to 25 percent, and those of clear length were over 25 percent for both altitude ranges. It was observed that culm height, D.E.H., clear length and clear length/culm height among each altitude ranges were significant at the 1 percent level. The Duncan's Test of culm characteristics among altitude ranges distinguished bamboos of below 400 meters from bamboos of over 500 meters. The correlation coefficients among culm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides associated with attitudinal gradient were shown to be highly significant. In conclusion, the variation of calm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides was large for below 400 meters and these results suggest that planting of the species should be done below 400 meters.

  • An increase in speech intelligibility has been found in Clear Speech compared to conversational speech. Clear Speech is defined by decreased articulation rates and increased frequency and length of pauses. The objective of the present study was to investigate improvement in immediate speech intelligibility in 10 patients with Parkinson's disease (age range: 46 to 75 years) using Clear Speech. This experiment has been performed using the Phonatory Aerodynamic System 6600 after the participants read the first sentence of a Sanchaek passage and the "List for Adults 1" in the Sentence Recognition Test (SRT) using casual speech and Clear Speech. Acoustic and aerodynamic parameters that affect speech intelligibility were measured, including mean F0, F0 range, intensity, speaking rate, mean airflow rate, and respiratory rate. In the Sanchaek passage, use of Clear Speech resulted in significant differences in mean F0, F0 range, speaking rate, and respiratory rate, compared with the use of casual speech. In the SRT list, significant differences were seen in mean F0, F0 range, and speaking rate. Based on these findings, it is claimed that speech intelligibility can be affected by adjusting breathing and tone in Clear Speech. Future studies should identify the benefits of Clear Speech through auditory-perceptual studies and evaluate programs that use Clear Speech to increase intelligibility.

  • To verify the field-effectiveness of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), a terrestrial LiDAR was deployed to examine the damage properties of woods in forest fire area, then the data was compared with the results surveyed by a forestry expert. Four sample plots (30 m × 50 m, 0.15 ha) were set from the foot to the top of the mountain, and DBH, height, clear length, burned height, and crown length were investigated. Next, TLS collected information on damage characteristics found in the sample plots. This information was then compared with that amassed by the expert. The expert and the TLS survey results showed 30.8 cm and 29.9 cm for DBH, 15.8 m and 17.5 m for tree height, 8.4 m and 8.4 m for clear length, 4.0 m, 3.5 m for burned height, and 7.4 cm and 9.1 cm for crown length. With the exceptions of height and clear length, no notable discrepancy was observed between two methods. H/D ratio, CL/H ratio, and BH/CL ratio, all of which contribute to stability and decay rate of the stand, from the two methods were also compared. The human survey rated each ratio (H/D, CL/H, BH/CL in order) 51.3%, 47.1%, and 53.6%, while the TLS presented the results of 58.8%, 52.0%, and 38.7%.

  • This paper investigated external factors (height. crown width. diameter breath height, clear length) of tree and electric resistance ($k{\Omega}$) in damaged forest by Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye. The height. crown width and diameter breath height of tree external factors have high a coefficient of correlation. but clear length has not a coefficient of correlation. In relationship of electric resistance and external factor. big tree that height. crown width. diameter breath height has lower electric resistance value than that of small tree. (low electric resistance value is high tree vigor, high electric resistance value is low tree vigor)) Dead tree have smaller diameter breath height. crown width. higher clear length than survival tree in damaged forest by Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye. To investigation of relationship external factors according to electric resistance value. electric resistance value was divided three class (< $l4k{\Omega}$, possible of survival. $14{\sim}20k{\Omega}$, > $20k{\Omega}$, possible of dead). In lower class(< $l4k{\Omega}$), external factors have bigger which was height. crown width. diameter breath height and lower which was clear length than them of higher class ($14{\sim}20k{\Omega}$, > $20k{\Omega}$). Linear regression solutions of electric resistance and external factors were Y = -0.572 ${\times}$ Height - 1.163 ${\times}$ crown width - 0.242 ${\times}$ diameter breath height + 0.757 ${\times}$ clear length + 25.765. Regression solutions were significant in 5%.

  • In estimates of horizontal radiation, its values are determined by correlations among the length of day, noon altitude of the sun, and cloud amount. During winter from 1971 to 1974 in Korea, its correlations are calculated by empirical method are $$Q_o=0.0124 H_cT_d at clear day and$$ $$ Q_s=0.0124 H_cT_d (1-0.0C4^1.3) at cloudy day.$$ here$ Q_o, Q_s, H_c, T_d, C $ are horizontal radiation at clear day, horizontal radiation at cloudy day, noon altitude of the sun, length of day, and cloud amount. In applications of this equation at 10 stations in Korea, errors are less than 10% when cloud amount are less than 7, and 1O~20% when cloud amount are more than 7. But, according to Laevastu equation in same case, errors are 50% closely.

  • Experimental studies were conducted in a clear water condition to investigate the functioning of a sack gabion as a scour countermeasure at bridge piers. For different sizes of fill materials of sack gabions no difference was observed in the initial movement of sack gabions. Significant factors on the dislodging of sack gabions are approaching flow depth and velocity, pier width, and thickness and length of sack gabions. It was observed that the stability of the sack gabions is increased in a collective body of riprap stones than the placement of individual riprap stone. The length of a sack gabion has significant effect on its initial movement and the stability of a sack gabion was found to be increased by lengthening the length of gabions. The experimental results were used to derive formulas sizing gabions for scour protection at bridge piers. piers.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine productivity and cost of tree-length harvesting using cable yarding system in a larch (Larix leptolepis) clear-cutting stand located in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. We used tree-length harvesting method using cable yarding system with a tower yarder HAM300. The productivity was $17.6m^3/hr$ for felling, $12.4m^3/hr$ for delimbing, $4.2m^3/hr$ for yarding, and $8.1m^3/hr$ for processing. The total cost of the harvesting system was $48,381won/m^3$, which was majorly composed of yarding operation cost, at $40,169won/m^3$ (79.3%), while felling had the lowest cost at $1,154won/m^3$ (4.1%). Major factors affecting felling and processing productivity was tree volume and the number and thickness of branches for delimbing productivity. In addition, we suggest that training and education for machine operators were critical to improve yarding productivity.

  • Objectives and Methods : The present study was to investigate the change of acupuncture point location of gallbladder meridian in head by way of reviewing classical literatures. Result and Conclusions : 1. The locations of acupuncture points closed-by anatomical marks such as GB1, GB2, GB3, GB11, GB12, GB19, GB20 are clear and accurate. 2. The expression of acupuncture points' locations of GB4, GB5, GB6, GB8 and GB10 are obscure in classical literature, but their locations became clear and objective in recent literatures. 3. The locations of GB9 and GB13 are open to dispute but WHO standard acupuncture point seems to be resonable. 4. In classical literature, the length from the midpoint of the anterior hairline to the midpoint of the posterior hairline is 12 B-cun, and the length from the midpoint of the anterior hairline to the GB19 is 5 cun, 5.5 cun or 6.5 cun. We presume that the length from GB15 to GB19 might have been measured by F-cun.
