  • This study investigates the potential for multi-cultural youths, given their innate bilingual and dual culture, to be trained as the competent ODA professionals. For the purpose of collecting information, we organized two different kinds of FGI in 2015. The first FGI was conducted with a group of 10 expert participants from August 17 to September 25. The second FGI was conducted four times, from October 5 to October 23, with 13 adolescents from multi-cultural families from Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Japan, and China. The semi-structured interview items were passed through a formal review process of the Institutional Ethics Committee. Furthermore, with the participants' pre-consent to recording, all recorded data were categorized through the transcription process. The results are as follows. While the potential for nourishing bilingual and dual cultural capabilities are high for the adolescent children of multi-cultural families, the expert group also emphasized the negative aspects of these capabilities being suppressed due to the relatively oppressed family environment. The expert group therefore suggests the following: building parent awareness of ODA human resources, developing an educational career transition roadmap, and providing institutional incentives for ODA. In addition, to some extent, the researchers were able to detect some positive self-esteem among the adolescent children of multi-cultural families as a result of the bilingual and dual cultural competencies required to be ODA personnel. In sum, the research provides insight into the need for national social support for the adolescent children of multi-cultural families, so that their strengths are not extinguished, in order that they might grow up as competent ODA personnel.

  • There has been no studies that compare services of residential care centers, group homes, and foster homes although out-of-home care services differ from each other depending on the types of out-of-home care. This study compared care satisfaction of 481 children in residential care centers, group homes, and foster homes for five years. Futhermore, factors that predict care satisfaction of the children were identified using multi-level modeling analyses. As results, this study found that care satisfaction of children in group homes was the higher than that in foster homes and residential care centers. In addition, self-esteem, social support, and types of out-of-home services were identified as significant predictors of changes in care satisfaction. Based on the study results, suggestions to help children adapt to out-of-home care and improve out-of-home care satisfaction were made.

  • The purpose of this study was to think about 'the nature of the mind' through the extraction of contents related to the 'mind' which is contained in "Non-eo(the Analects of Confucius)" and to devise a 'Non-Eo' counseling program intended for elementary school students by finding out counseling elements related to the growth of the mind. The 'Non-Eo' counseling program developed in this study was 10 lessons of forty minutes each and divided the group counseling procedure into three phases as introduction, progress, and wrap-up. The subjects of this study were 40 elementary school students in upper grades in a specific county: 20 students in the control and experimental group respectively. The 'Non-Eo' counseling program was applied to the experimental group twice a week for five weeks and it was not applied to the control group. Two measurement tools were used in order to verify the effects: the self-esteem measurement test adopted by Gong, Tae-Su(1998) which was originated from the selfesteem measurement test for children developed by Coopersmith(1967) and the friendship measure test adopted by Jo, Seong-rye(2001) which originated from the friendship measure test developed by Furman and Bierman(1983). The results were as follows; Firstly, there was a significant difference between the growth of self-esteem of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .032. Secondly, there was a significant difference between the growth of friendship of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .046. The fact that this study carried out a new counselling approach called 'Non-Eo' counseling based on the contents related to 'the growth of the mind' in "Non-eo" is of great significance.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between parenting experiences of married immigrant women and their mental health including self-esteem and depression. Data came from 471 married immigrant women with a child who participated in the home visiting program for children of multicultural families provided by Multicultural Family Support Centers. The results indicated that, the mothers' self-esteem was related to their perceptions of parenting, parenting stress, marital satisfaction, and social support. In addition, the mothers' depression was associated with their proficiency in Korean, household income, perception of parenting, parenting stress, knowledge on child development, marital satisfaction, and social support. These findings suggest that the parenting experiences of married immigrant women are closely related to their mental health. Parenting education programs that increase parenting efficacy and reduce parenting stress would be helpful to improve the mental health of married immigrant women.

Behavioral responses about intensive care unit phenomena were analyzed according to the 4 categories identified to assess children's perceived stressors in ICU. Impaired psychological responses were examined using observational and interview data. Drawings were analyzed by content and color by this researcher and validated by the psychologist. Three children (18.8%) experienced time disorientation. An equal number of subject experienced perceptual illusion. Two children(12.5%) experienced hallucination. Vivid dream about ICU phenomena was reported by 2 children. Seven children(43.8%) were identified as having exaggerated fear. They feared about oxygen mask and ICU environment in general. Seven children(43.8%) experienced impairment of memory about treatments, procedures, and environment of ICU. 3. • The purposes of this study are as follows: (1) how are marital relationships classified by wives' perception of marital conflict and intimacy? (2) how do these types differ in terms of demographic variables (age, income, educational level, and employment status), individual psychological variables (self-esteem, differentiation) and interaction-related variables (affective self-disclosure, conflict resolution styles)?, and what are the relative discriminant powers of these variables in explaining marriage types? The data for this study were collected from 944 married women in Dajeon, who had one or more children, using the structured questionnaire. Classification using median and discriminant analysis were used with SPSS-PC for windows program. The major findings are as follows: The characteristics of each type are as follows: (1) The 'devitalized couples' consist of 18.2% of the whole sample. The levels of positive self-concept and positive interaction are the lowest. (2) The 'intimate couples' consist of 32.6% of the sample. They tend to be found most frequently in the population which is high in the educational level and income level and low in age. While the levels of positive self-concept and positive interaction are the highest, the levels of negative conflict resolution styles are the lowest. (3) The 'intimacy-persuaded couples' take 17.3% of the sample. The levels of positive self-concept and interaction are similar to the 'intimate couples'. (4) The 'conflict-habituated couples' take 31.9% of the sample. Whereas the levels of negative conflict resolution styles are the highest, the levels of positive self-concept and positive interaction are the lowest. The results of this study suggest several implications for the family-life education. It needs to apply different approaches to improve marital quality for each type of marriage.

  • The foster care system is a social welfare service that supplements the functions of the family while enabling children, who cannot receive proper care from their biological parents, to receive the necessary protection under the plan within the prescribed period of time within a substitute or foster family. A large part of the emotional instability experienced by foster care children is interpersonal maladjustment. Low self-esteem leads to difficulty in forming social relationships due to negative interpersonal relationships. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of traditional dance programs on the foster children who live in Daejeon Metropolitan City. A comparison between the pre- and post-interpersonal scores showed that the scores were improved after the traditional dance program, and the children's intimacy formation and communication were also improved. The participants were less active at the beginning of the program, but became more interested and more active toward the middle of the program. The majority of the participants increased their degree of communication with the formation of intimacy toward the middle of the program, and their self-confidence improved in terms of their peer relationships. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of traditional dancing on the development of interpersonal relationships. In a subsequent study, a traditional dancing program consisting of various contents will be applied over a long period of time, which should provide them with the opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills. In addition, it is necessary to provide educational opportunities for helping foster children reduce their emotional instability with systemic and diverse traditional dance programs.
