  • Objectives This study aims to find out the recent trend of the herbal medicine treatment in children's stomatitis in China, and propose better methods to treat children's stomatitis in Korea. Methods The randomized controlled trials (RCT) relevant to 'Herbal medicine treatment on children's stomatitis' were searched using China Academic Journal (CAJ). The search method we used included search formula, (SU = '口內炎' + '口腔炎' + 'stomatitis') and (SU = '儿童' + '小儿' + 'children' + 'child') from 2000 to September 2021. Results A total of 9 RCTs were selected and analyzed. All reports showed that oral administration of herbal medicine were effective and improved clinical symptoms. The most-used herbal medicine category was Heat-clearing medicine (淸熱藥). Conclusions The literatures from China have shown that herbal medicine improves children's stomatitis. These outcomes may be helpful for the treatment of children's stomatitis in Korea. However, further studies are needed to develop treatment guidelines for children's stomatitis.

We measured height percentile of first time visit, and that of last time visit. And we compared them using the Growth Statistics Curve made by the Korean Association of Pediatrics, 1998. Results : The mean growth of total children showed 4.04 percentile upwardly; the growth- up percentile of boys was 4.52 and that of girls was 3.26. Analysis according to disease resulted as follows; children with respiratory disease showed 10.29 percentile growth-up, digestive disease 4.21percentile, urinary disease 4 percentile, allergic disease 2.65 percentile, weak children 2.52 percentile and other disease 3.19 percentile. • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the aspects of the Korean medicine (KM) treatment among children with cerebral palsy (CP) according to the disease characteristics. Methods: In a prospective observational multicenter study for children with CP, we analyzed 78 baseline questionnaires of children having experience of KM treatments such as acupuncture and Korean herbal medicine and 43 follow-up data of children who have received KM during the one observation year. Results: Of all the 182 participants, 38 children were currently getting KM treatment and 40 children have discontinued KM treatment. Children with non-spastic CP and more health problems tended to use KM. The most frequent reason for quitting acupuncture therapy was 'suffering of children' and the highest reason of stopping herbal medicine was 'rejection of children'. Among the 133 participants finished one year follow-up, 43 children have received at least one KM treatment. The average number of acupuncture therapy was twice a week and the average monthly cost of acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine were 65,922 won and 476,003 won, respectively. Children under 32 month old have received significantly more acupuncture and children with non-spastic CP have taken significantly more herbal medicine. Conclusions: Further study will be required to confirm the effectiveness of KM and increase the utilization of KM among the children with CP. More efforts should be made to increase the convenience of acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine and to expand the insurance coverage of KM for children with CP.

  • Objectives: Compliance of herbal medicine is extremely important in Korean oriental medicine, since herbal medicine is main approach to the most of outpatients in Korean pediatrics. The more compliant to the medication, the more effective care is given to children. Thus, we conducted this research to evaluate the compliance of herbal medicine, and factors associated with compliance in children. Methods: 61 children (men 28, women 33) were participated who visited the Korean Oriental Medicine Department in university hospital for two weeks. We used Morisky's self-reported questionnaire which is consisted of four questions. Also, we checked medical records and researched respondent to acquire more factors. We defined as a "full compliant" if answers were 'No' to all of the questions. We analyzed the compliance and associated factors with Pearson's $x^2$-test and Fisher's exact test, and Spearman correlation coefficient. Compliance and associated factors were analyzed with linear regression. Results: Compliance of herbal medicine was not related to respondent, and 34 children (55.7%) were non-compliant. The best compliant type of herbal medicine was granule medication (p=0.046). However, there was no relationship between compliance and age, sex, sibling, purpose of medication, period of disease, frequency of medication, and medication duration. The age, frequency of medication, medication duration, and purpose of medications(period of disease) had correlation(p<0.01). Also, older children tended to forget to take herbal medicine(p=0.004). Conclusions: Over an half of the total subjects (55.7%) were non-compliant, so we should improve compliance of herbal medicine. Since granule form of medication was shown to have the best compliance, we should try to use granule form of medication instead of liquid medications. Also, we can also improve compliance with giving attention to the patients, especially older children in order to improve their compliance.

Two boys-one was 10 years old and the other was 8, and one girl-8 years old were treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine from March 2003 to May 2004. Acupoints-CV20(百會) CV24(上星) L7(列缺) LI4(合谷) Liv3(太衝) K3(太谿) was used and herbal medicine-Yukmijihwangtang(六味地黃湯) and Guibitang(歸脾湯) was used. T-score in ADS test(Continuous Performance Tests) checked after these treatments was lowered to the normal range, Conners' parent rating scale and Home Situations Questionaire score were lowered compared with those checked bfore treatment. These result suggest that acupuncture and herbal medicine could be one of helpful treatment to the ADHD children.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends of Chinese clinical research in the last 5 years of Chinese herbal medicine treatment for anorexia in children, and to find ways to utilize the diagnostic criteria and herbal medicine treatment for children who have anorexia in Korea. Methods The authors searched literatures using China National Knowledge Infrastructure published from January 1, 2015 to June 18, 2019. Selected literatures were collected in order of recent publication year. And then, demographic data, duration of illness, intervention, treatment period, outcome, and adverse events were analyzed. In addition, the diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children are categorized and presented in chart. Results A total of 50 papers were included in the analysis of this study. In the selected studies, the most commonly used diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children were ${\ll}$Zhu Futang Practice of Pediatrics${\gg}$ in Western medicine and ${\ll}$Diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for TCM syndromes${\gg}$ in traditional Chinese medicine. As a result, in all the studies reporting total efficacy, the total effective rate of the treatment group treated with herbal medicine was significantly higher than that of the control group. Also, appetite recovery rate and weight gain were significantly higher, gastric emptying time and appetite recovery time were significantly shorter in the treatment group. Conclusions Herbal medicine treatment can help improve anorexia in children. In Korea, diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children should be established. In addition, criteria should be established to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicine treatment.

  • Introduction: We aimed to investigate the predictive factors and optimal age for response to herbal medicine treatment for height gain in children. Methods: This retrospective chart review included 61 children (age range, 5-16 years) treated for height gain between 2011 and 2015. A predictive model was established by multiple linear regression analysis. Dependent variables were defined by the differences in percentile before and after herbal medicine treatment. The optimal cutoff value of patient age was determined by receiver operating curve analysis. Results : The age of initiation of herbal medicine therapy (p = 0.012) and administration of Forsythiae fructus (p = 0.002) were significant variables for treatment response. The adjusted R2 value was 0.231. The mean ages of the responder and non-responder groups were significantly different (p = 0.023). The optimal cutoff value of age for predicting treatment response was 9.75 years. Treatment response was better among children below 9.75 years of age. Conclusions: Patient age and administration of Forsythiae fructus were identified as determinants of response to herbal medicine treatment. Treatment of rhinitis and initiation of height gain treatment at an early age are critical for better response. These findings will provide fundamental data for further research.
