  • Historically, children have inevitably been under different treatments depending on their circumstances. In noble families, overprotection rather damaged children; in general, children undergoing important stages of life were exploited as laborers and not cared for. In order to help these children grow whole and healthy, pediatrics has provided information on the right environment and medical treatments for children. In traditional Korean medicine, it is said, "the reason I put gynecology and pediatrics in the first chapters $\cdots$ of this book (Chapter on Pediatrics, Euibangyoochui) is to show my intention of respecting the origin", emphasizing the significance of children as the basis of a person. This is distinguished not only by philosophical implication, but also by its practical contribution to children's health. Euibangyoochui 醫方類聚 is the major book of 15th-century Korean medicine, compiled medicine until Joseon. Through Chapter on pediatrics, which collected medical theories and treatments on children, this paper studies how children had been perceived in traditional Korean medicine, and how it was followed by corresponding medical treatments.

The steps include: Deciding a topic that children should search for, choosing an appropriate book to resolve children's curiosities, spending some time for discoursing among children by using pictures in the book, and sharing what they had understood. Through this process, a pre-school teacher met with children who were full of abilities, ideas and motivation to explore with a little assistance. • The Making-books Program(Byun, unpublished) uses the Arts PROPEL approach based on multiple-intelligences theory(Gardner, 1983). PROPEL is a loose acronym for production, perception and reflection, 3 stages in the learning process. The Making-books Program includes designing rubrics, making-books, and publishing. Effect of the program on creativity was examined by before- and after-testing by TTCT. Participants were 63 7-year-old children with 30 children in the experimental and 33 children in the control group. On the pre-test, there was no between groups difference in the participants' creativity on the TTCT. After 21 treatments, the effectiveness of the Making-books Program was shown by significant between group differences on the post-test.

  • Subject headings support the effective access of children's picture books. However, it is difficult to select subject terms from titles or table of contents in children's picture books because of their relatively little textual information. Therefore, it is necessary to assign subject terms to each picture book. However, it is not adequate to use general subject headings because the types and levels of general subject headings are different from special subject headings for the children's materials. For this reason, this study aims to develop subject headings for children's picture books. The subject terms in A to Zoo were selected, and the selected terms were translated into Korean and modified for the Korean culture and language. Other reference books, such as Elementary Korean Dictionary, were also used to determine adequate terms for children. The resulting subject headings were assigned to the recommended picture books for children and used to search by subject, browse, and recommend books.
