The purpose this research was to develop the practicum-affiliated coursework for pre-service chemistry teachers to enhance their instructional professionalism. The researchers developed the syllabus and the materials of the practicum-affiliated coursework and opened the class 'Practice of Chemistry Lesson' for the pre-service chemistry teachers who were expected to participate in the practicum. Semi-constructed individual interviews revealed that pre-service chemistry teachers thought the developed coursework, which linked science education theory and practice, helped them to develop educational connoisseurship about good science class and to be prepared practically to the practicum, and as the result, they could enhance their teaching ability. The result identified that the reconstruction of the practicum experience through the process of 5 steps of the curriculum could develop the instructional professionalism of pre-service chemistry teachers.
The purpose of this study was to search pre-service teachers?and chemistry teachers?conceptions related to electrolysis process by predicting electrolysis products in NaI solution. A questionnaire developed by the researchers and following interviews were adopted for the research. By the methods, the conceptions of the groups were compared. Also, the relationship between their conceptions and explanations of chemistry II textbooks and general chemistry books was examined. From the analysis, it was found that most of the pre-service teachers had difficulties in using standard electrode potential when they predicted products of electrolysis. Most of the chemistry teachers could use standard electrode potential, but it was difficult to understand water electrolysis in redox reaction. The explanations of chemistry II textbooks also contained misconceptions.

This study examined the conceptions of high school students, In-service chemistry teachers, and chemistry teachers related to the electrolysis phenomena by questionnaires and follow-up interviews. High school chemistry II textbooks were analyzed for finding the cause of the misconceptions of the teachers and students. From the analysis, it was found that many teachers represented to students the reduction-oxidation reaction and the electrodes of electrolysis are opposite to the reaction of a chemical cell without explanation of the principles. It means that students would learn the electrolysis phenomena by rote. But the teachers thought that it was not necessary to explain the principles to students because the students could not understand. Also, some of the teacher had misconceptions in electrolysis of solution taking no account of water electrolysis. They only considered the reduction-oxidation reactions of the ions already were contained in solution. They did not considered the ions generated by the electrolysis. This tendency is similar to In-service chemistry teachers and high school students. Also, this tendency can be found in chemistry II textbooks.
We compared the understanding of 4 pre-service teachers of chemistry education major and 2 pre-service teachers of chemistry major related to conceptions of "properties of dilute solutions" chapter in high school Chemistry II textbooks. As results, few pre-service teachers understood fully the concepts of high school Chemistry II textbooks. Some pre-service teachers had misconceptions related to properties of dilute solutions. We found that few differences existed between the pre-service teachers' understanding regardless of whether they took a major in chemistry education of a education college or a major in chemistry of noneducation college. Most of the pre-service teachers who attended this research recognized the lack of practical knowledge in their pre-service teacher curriculum.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of science writing for different audiences on preservice chemistry teachers' chemistry concept understanding and modeling ability in general chemistry experiment activities using Argument-based Modeling (AbM) strategy. And we also examined preservice chemistry teachers' perceptions of modeling in different audience groups. The participants of the study were 18 university students in the first grade of preservice chemistry teachers taking a general chemistry experiment course. They completed eleven topics of general chemistry experiment using argument-based modeling strategy. The understanding of chemistry concept was compared with the effect size of pre- and post-chemistry concept test scores. To find out modeling ability, we analyzed level of model by each preservice chemistry teacher. Analytical framework for the modeling ability was composed of three elements, explanation, representation, and communication. The questionnaire was conducted to check up on preservice chemistry teacher's recognition of modeling. The result of analyzing the effect of modeling for different audience on the understanding of chemistry concept and modeling ability, the preservice chemistry teachers' were found to be more effective when the level of audience was low. There was no difference in the recognition of modeling between the groups for audience. However, we could confirm that the responses of preservice chemistry teachers are changed in concrete when they have an experience in succession on modeling.
This study analyzed the level of chemistry teachers' cognition related to two types of acid-base models taught in secondary schools. For the purpose, a questionnaire was developed to identify teachers' cognitions based on previous studies that analyzed the 'Ignorance' of each model. The questionnaire consisted of two items, one related to acid and base reactions and one related to acid and base dissociation, which suggested inconsistencies between the two models. The subjects were 15 chemistry teachers, and as a result, teachers' cognitions were analyzed at four levels. The four levels are: if they don't know the two models, if they only understand one model, if they understand the two models, and perceived the 'Ignorance' of one model, and if they understand the two models and perceived the 'Ignorance' of the two models. The largest proportion of teachers understood the two models and perceived the 'Ignorance' of one model. However, the proportion of understanding the two models and perceiving the 'Ignorance' of the two models was very small. Through this, we argued that efforts to increase the level of chemistry teachers' cognition of the model and 'Ignorance' were necessary.

The purpose of this study was to investigate explanations of high school chemistry II textbooks and the diversity of chemistry major teachers' thinking types related to dilute solution properties for finding the sources of students' difficulties. Eight kinds of textbooks were analyzed, and the teachers' thoughts were searched by a questionnaire developed for inquiring teachers' preference of explanation types. We analyzed teachers' responses from individual interviews after the questionnaire to discern their deeper thoughts. From the results, it was found that the explanations of the textbooks were not clear enough to have scientific conceptions. The figures and explanations of the textbooks do not match either. It was also found that chemistry major teachers' thoughts were not solid when they suffered cognitive confliction by different situation with their thoughts.
In this study, we analyzed the values of ionization and ionization constants in the chemistry textbooks developed during 1945-2009 year. The chemistry teachers compared strength of strong acids in aqueous solution by questionnaire. In the questionnaire, we searched chemistry teachers' cognitions about the discordance reason of ionization constant formulation and the values in the textbooks. The subjects were 46 chemistry teachers. As results, the teachers compared the strength of strong acids in aqueous solution based on the ionization and ionization constant values in the textbooks. They didn't notice the problem of discordance of ionization constant formulation and the values in the textbooks. Even though they recognized the problem, they could not find the solution, and thought the problem arrived by experiment error or measurement error.

This study investigated the perceptions of the relationship among the three acid-base models of chemistry teachers. In addition, we examined how the perception of the relationship between models affected on the interpretation of concepts in each model. To investigate teachers' perceptions and interpretations, a questionnaire and interviews were conducted for 24 chemistry teachers. As results, most of the chemistry teachers recognized the three models as cumulative extension relationships. The perceptions were related to the contents of textbooks. The perception of the relationship of these models influenced on interpretations of the models' acid-base concept. In this study, we suggested that science teachers need to be aware of diverse models' roles.
