  • Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)-cerium composite membranes with improved oxidative stability were prepared for proton exchange membrane fuel cell application. Oxidative stability of the composite membranes changed depending on the amount of incorporated metal. Their water uptake, IEC and proton conductivity were also affected. ICP analysis confirmed trace of cerium ion in the composite membranes and $^1H$-NMR indicated successful coordination of sulfonic acid groups with the metal ions. Increasing amount of the cerium ion resulted in decrease in proton conductivities and water uptake, but enhanced oxidative stabilities. A hydrogen peroxide exposure equipment was used for the test of oxidative stability of the composite membranes, which enabled to mimic fuel cell operating condition compared with conventional Fenton's test.

  • In n/${\gamma}$ mixed field of $^{241}Am-Be$(${\alpha}$, n) neutron source, we seperated the neutron component from gamma ray component. At the center of the detector, $^6Li$ was doped on the cerium activated glass plate for $^6Li$(${\alpha}$, n)T nuclear reaction. The time differences of the light following excitations by different scintillators, BC501($C_8H_{10}$) and cerium, and by the same scintillator for different radiations as neutrons and gamma-rays are used to apply the methods of PSD(Pulse Shape Discriminator) and CFD(Constant Fraction Discriminator). The figure of merit of $^6Li$ fast neutron spectrometer is estimated as 1.36.

  • Objectives: With recent advances in nanoparticle manufacturing and applications, potential exposure to nanoparticles in various settings is becoming increasing likely. No investigation has yet been performed to assess whether respiratory tract exposure to cerium oxide ($CeO_2$) nanoparticles is associated with alterations in protein signaling, inflammation, and apoptosis in rat lungs. Methods: Specific-pathogen-free male Sprague-Dawley rats were instilled with either vehicle (saline) or $CeO_2$ nanoparticles at a dosage of 7.0 mg/kg and euthanized 1, 3, 14, 28, 56, or 90 days after exposure. Lung tissues were collected and evaluated for the expression of proteins associated with inflammation and cellular apoptosis. Results: No change in lung weight was detected over the course of the study; however, cerium accumulation in the lungs, gross histological changes, an increased Bax to Bcl-2 ratio, elevated cleaved caspase-3 protein levels, increased phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, and diminished phosphorylation of ERK-1/2-MAPK were detected after $CeO_2$ instillation (p<0.05). Conclusions: Taken together, these data suggest that high-dose respiratory exposure to $CeO_2$ nanoparticles is associated with lung inflammation, the activation of signaling protein kinases, and cellular apoptosis, which may be indicative of a long-term localized inflammatory response.

  • The effects of Ba and Ce addition has been investigated in YBCO prepared by trifluoroacetate(TFA) metalorganic depostition(MOD) method. Precursor solutions with cation ratios of Y:Ba:Cu:Ce=1:2+x:3:x(x=0, 0.05, 0.1 and 1.5) have been prepared by adding an excess amount of cerium and barium. Coated film was calcined at lower temperature under a moisture-containing oxygen atmosphere. Superconducting YBCO films have been obtained by performing conversion heat treatment at temperature of $780{\sim}810^{\circ}C$ under a moisture-containing Ar(1,000 ppm oxygen) atmosphere. It has been shown that the critical current($I_c$) of YBCO film was degraded by doping of Ba and Ce atoms. But $I_c$ was increased as the amount of doped Ba and Ce content increased from 5% to 15 %. It was observed that there was little increase of a flux pinning force with Ba and Ce addition in YBCO film prepared by TFA-MOD process.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigated the surface roughness and change in the amount of adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to the commercial pit and fissure sealant containing cerium oxide nano particles(CNPs). Methods: The CNPs was incorporated into a commercial pit and fissure sealant at 0-4.0 wt%. Disk Specimens (ϕ 10 mm × 2 mm) were prepared by light polymerization the front and back for 40s. Average surface roughness was measured and Streptococcus mutans adhesion was observed under confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) after 24 hour. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSDa post-hoc test. Results: Difference of the surface roughness(Ra) between groups was not statistically significant in both non CNPs group and CNPs group(p>0.05). In CNPs group, the amount of S. mutans adhesion was significantly different between control group and decreased in order of CNPs 4.0, CNPs 0.5, CNPs 1.0 and CNPs 2.0(p<0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, these aspects of oral bacteria performances suggest potential usefulness of the CNPs incorporation, especially CNPs 1% and 2%, in pit and fissure sealant for inducing antibacterial effect.

  • Methane activation through oxychlorination is in the spotlight due to the relatively mild reaction conditions at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range of $450-550^{\circ}C$. Although $CeO_2$ is known to exhibit good activity for methane oxychlorination, significant amounts of by-products such as $CO_2$, CO and carbon deposits are produced during the reaction over $CeO_2$. We investigated the effect of iron in $FeO_x/CeO_2$ catalysts on methane oxychlorination. $FeO_x/CeO_2$ with 3 wt% iron shows the maximum yield at $510^{\circ}C$ with 23% conversion of methane and 65% selectivity of chloromethane. XRD and $H_2$ TPR results indicate that iron-cerium solid solution was formed, resulting in the production of more easily reduced cerium oxide and the suppression of catalysts sintering during the reaction. Furthermore, the selectivity of by-products decreased more significantly over $FeO_x/CeO_2$ than cerium oxide, which can be attributed to the facilitation of HCl oxidation arising from the enhanced reducibility of the former sample.

  • The effect of inhibitors on the electrochemical behavior and the stress corrosion cracking resistance of Alloy 600(UNS N06600) was evaluated in 10% sodium hydroxide solution at $315^{\circ}C$. The specimens of a C-ring type for stress corrosion cracking test were polarized at 150 mV above the corrosion potential for 120 hours with and without inhibitors such as titanium oxide, titanium boride and cerium boride. The chemical compositions of the films formed on the crack tip in the C-ring specimens were analyzed using a scanning Auger electron spectroscopy. The cerium boride, the most effective, was observed to decrease the crack propagation rate more than a factor of three compared with that obtained in no inhibitor solution. It was found that the changes of the active-passive transition potentials and the film compositions were related to the resistance to stress corrosion cracking in high temperature caustic solution.

  • NaZSM 5 was synthesized in an alkaline medium and impregnated with cerium oxide by wet method using cerium nitrate as the source for cerium. There TGA results shows decomposition of nitrate at $200^{\circ}C$. The ceria impregnated ZSM 5 materials were designated as NaZSM 5 (X) where X is the percent ceria impregnated (3, 5, 7, 11, 19%). They were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDAX, BET techniques. XRD analysis showed decrease in intensity of the patterns with the increase in the ceria loading but crystallization of ceria to larger size is evident for 11 and 19% loading. The surface area and pore volume decreased with increase in ceria loading. The maximum adsorption capacity of NaZSM 5 (5%) is 100.2 mg/g of sorbent. The ceria impregnated NaZSM 5's were found to be regenerable, selective and recyclable.

  • The peroxidase activity was localized cytochemically to get an insight into its precise function in lignin biosynthesis. In this work, cerium chloride ($CeCl_3$) was used as a trapping agent for hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) generated from peroxidase. Seasonal variation of peroxidase activities in cambial region of Populus, Pinus, and Ginkgo was investigated at subcellular levels. Under transmission electron microscopy, electron dense deposits of cerium perhydroxide formed by reaction with $H_2O_2$ were observed in cambium and its immediate derivatives. The staining with $CeCl_3$ in cambium varied with growth seasons. The strongest $H_2O_2$ accumulation, regardless of tree species, appeared in May. Staining pattern of $CeCl_3$ in the cambium of poplar indicated that the production of peroxidase started in March before the opening of buds and reached the highest in May and then declined in August. Ginkgo and Pinus showed relatively late generation of $H_2O_2$ production when compared with Populus. Although Ginkgo and Pinus are classified into gymnosperms, however, the generation of peroxidase production and its duration was different from each other. Little staining appeared in all the tree samples collected in September before falling the leaves.
