As in other areas of materials technology, the tendency towards light weight constructions becomes more and more important also for powder metallurgy. The development is mainly driven by the automotive industry looking for mass reduction of vehicles as a major factor for fuel economy. Powder metallurgy has to offer a number of interesting areas including the development of sintered materials of light metals. PM aluminium alloys with improved properties are on the way to replace ferrous pars. For high temperature applications in the engine, titanium aluminide based materials offer a great potential, e.g. for exhaust valves. The PM route using elemental powders and reactions sintering is considered to be a cost effective way for net shape parts production. Furthermore it is expected that lower costs for titanium raw materials coming from metallurgical activities will offer new chances for sintered parts with titanium alloys. The field of cellular metals expands with the hollow sphere technique, that can provide materials of many metals and alloys with a great flexibility in structure modifications. These structures are expected to be used in improving the safety (crash absoption) and noise reduction in cars in the near future and offer great potential for many other applications.
Recently we have reported a novel class of anion receptors which are based on 2n-crown-n topology. Trioxane derivatives are capable of anion sensing through pure aliphatic C-H hydrogen bonding. In this work, we highlight another interesting property, i.e., they can also recognize cations as normal crown ethers (3n-crown-n topology). Since the same functional moiety can recognize anions and cations, these coronands are predicted to be amphi-ionophores. However, we could not detect cations even in the gas phase. Considering trioxane is analogous to [$1_6$]starand, this was rather counter-intuitive. The calculation results show that these coronands can detect alkali metals with very low affinity. The low affinity toward cations should be responsible for this failure of experimental detection. With careful theoretical study, we found that this low affinity toward cations could be explained by the unfavorable charge-dipolar moiety orientations as proposed by Cui et al. As in the case of [$1_6$]starand, this is an example that underscores the importance of charge-dipolar moiety orientation in supramolecular interactions.

This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG Laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deep penetration weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in Type 303 with about 0.3%s. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in Type 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of Type 310S. through high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. Several laser pulse shapes were investigated and optimum pulse shapes were proposed for the reduction and prevention of porosity and solidification cracking.

Drosophila melanogaster is a useful model organism that offers essential insights into developmental and cellular processes shared with humans, which has been adapted for large scale analysis of medically important microbes and to test the toxicity of heavy metals, industrial solvents and other poisonous substances. We here give a brief review of the use of the Drosophila model in medical mycology, discuss the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the opportunistic human pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus, and give a brief summary of what is known about the toxicity of some common fungal VOCs. Further, we discuss the use of VOC detection as an indirect indicator of fungal growth, including for early diagnosis of aspergillosis. Finally, we hypothesize that D. melanogaster has promise for investigating the role of VOCs synthesized by A. fumigatus as possible virulence factors.
Aging is a multifaceted biological process that affects all organs and organ systems of the body. This review provides an up-to-date analysis of this highly exciting, rapidly changing field of science. The aging process is largely under genetic control but is highly responsive to diverse environmental influences. The genes that control aging are those that are involved with cell maintenance, cell damage and repair. The environmental factors that accelerate aging are those that influence either damage of cellular macromolecules, or interfere with their repair. Prominent among these are chronic inflammation, chronic infection, some metallic chemicals, ultraviolet light, and others that heighten oxidative stress. Other environment factors slow the aging process. Included among these agents are resveratrol and vitamin D. In addition, dietary restriction and exercise have been found to extend human lifespan. The various mechanisms whereby all these agents exert their influence on aging include epigenetic modification, chromatin maintenance, protection of telomeres, and anti-oxidant defense, among others. The complex process of aging remains under continued, intense investigation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response in aspect of attachment and growth rate of osteoblasts and growth rate of osteoblasts and human gingival fibroblasts to the commercially pure titanium(CP titanium)and titanium alloy(Ti-6AI-4V) that are used widely as implant materials, and to obtain the basic information to ideal implant materials. In the studly, commercially pure titanium in first test group, titanium alloy(Ti-6AI-4V) in second test group, cobalt-chrome-molybdenum alloy(Co-Cr-Mo alloy) in positive control group, and tissue culture polystyrene plate in negative control group were used. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V showed significantly greater attachment and growth rate(p(0.05) compared to Co-Cr-Mo alloy in each time. 2. There were no significant differences(p>0.05) in attachment and growth rate of bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6AI-4V or tissue culture plate. 3. Most bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and tissue culture plate were attached well to each substratum in first 2days, and then, grew at higher growth rate. On the other hand, some cells cultured on Co-Cr-Mo alloy failed to attach in first 2 days, and then, attached cells grew at lower growth rate than other groups. 4. Attachment and growth rates of gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V showed no significant differences(p>0.05) compared to Co-Cr-Mo alloy in 2 days, but significantly greater increase(p<0.05) in 5 and 9 days. 5. There were no significantly differences(p>0.05) between growth rates on gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and tissue culture plate in 2 and 5days, but a significant lower growth rate(p<0.05) on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V versus tissue culture plate. 6. Some gingival fibroblasts cultured on all specimen groups failed to attach, but attached cells grew well, especially on CP titanium, Ti-GAl-4V and tissue culture plate. 7. There were no significant differences(P>0.05) between growth rates of both bone marrow cells and gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6AI-4V. As a result of this study, both commercially pure titanium and Ti-6AI-4V showed excellent biocompatibility and there was no significant difference in the cellular response to the both metals. Bone marrow cells cultured on each substratum showed significantly greater growth rate and responded sensitively to cytotoxic effects of metal surfaces compared to gingival fibroblasts. Considering cell response to the substrate, it was likely that the composition itself of titanium metals have no significant effect on the biocompatibility. Further study need to be done to evaluate the influence of surface characteristics on cellular responses.
Co base superalloys have been widely used for the parts of gas turbine due to their excellent strength, thermal fatigue, oxidation resistance and weldability at high temperature. In this study, directional solidifications were carried out at various solidification rates, including $0.5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$ in the Co base superalloy FSX-414. The cellular interface were formed at a low solidification rate, $1{\mu}m/s$, and the dendritic interface was found at higher solidification rates, $5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$. As the spacing of dendrite structure decreased, the size and spacing of eutectics decreased. Dendrite arm spacing decreased with increasing solidification rates and temperature gradient. It was interesting to find the $M_{23}C_{6}$ eutectic microstructure formed between $\gamma$ dendrites. Composition analysis showed that Cr and W were segregated severely between the dendrites, which resulted in the formation of Cr-rich $M_{23}C_{6}$ and W-rich MC carbides.

Directional solidification experiments were carried out in a hypoeutectic Al-11.3Si-3.5Cu system to investigate the microstructural evolution with the solidification rate. At a fixed temperature gradient, a dendritic microstructure was observed at a constant speed of more than $25{\mu}ms^{-1}$, a cellular interface developed at $5{\mu}ms^{-1}$ and the growth rate of $0.5{\mu}ms^{-1}$ led to the stability of the planar interface. The results revealed that primary silicon phases formed among cells, even though the studied Al-Si alloy system formed the composition within a hypoeutectic silicon composition. This suggests that the liquid concentration among cells during solidification reached a higher concentration, i.e., the eutectic concentration. It is, however, interesting that primary silicon phases did not form during a dendritic growth of more than $25{\mu}ms^{-1}$. These experimental observations are explained using the theoretical models on the interface temperatures.

The results of the modification of metal materials treated by high temperature pulst:d plasma fluxes (HTlPPF) with a specific power of incident flux changing in the $(3...100)10^5{]\;}W/cm^2$ range and a pulse duration lying from 15 to $50{\;}\mu\textrm{s}$ have been presented. The results of HTPPF action were studied on the stainless steels of 18Cr-l0Ni, 16Cr- 15Ni, 13Cr-2Mo types; on the structural carbon steels of (13...35)Cr, St. 3, St. 20, St. 45 types; on the tool steels of U8, 65G, ShHI5 types, and others; on nickel and high nickel alloy of 20Cr-45Ni type; on zirconium- and vanadium-base alloys and other materials. The microstructure and properties (mechanical, tribological, erosion, and other properties) of modified materials and surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action have been investigated. It was found that the modification of materials by HTPPF resulted in a simultaneous increase of several properties of the treated articles: microhardness of the surface and layers of 40...60 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in depth, tribological characteristics (friction coefficient, wear resistance), mechanical properties ({\sigma_y}, {\;}{\sigma_{0.2}}.{\;}{\sigma_r}) on retention of the initial plasticity ($\delta$), corrosion resistance, radistanation erosion under ion irradiation, and others. The determining factor of the changes observed is the structural-phase modification of the near-surface layers, in particular, the formation of the fine cellular structure in the near-surface layers at a depth of $20{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ with dimension of cells changing in the range from 0.1 to $1., 5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, depending on the kind of material, its preliminary treatment, and the parameters of plasma fluxes. The remits obtained have shown the possibility of purposeful surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action over a depth up to 20...45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the concentration of alloying element (Ni, Cr, V) up to 20 wt.%. Possible industrial brunches for using the treatment have been also considered, as well as some results on modifying the serial industrial articles by HTPPF.
Recently, ultra-lightweight materials with open, periodic cell structures take much attention owing to its potential for multi-functionality such as load bearing, thermal dissipation, and actuation. This paper presents experimental results on the hydraulic and heat transfer characteristics for the Wire-woven Bulk Kagome(WBK) composed of aluminum 1100 wires. The overall pressure drop and heat transfer of the WBK specimen have been experimentally investigated under forced air convection condition. The pressure loss and heat transfer performance of the aluminum WBK are compared with other heat dissipation media. It was shown that heat transfer depended on relative density and surface area density. Comparison with metal foams and other heat dissipation media such as packed beds, lattice frame materials, louvered fins, and other materials suggests that the aluminum WBK competes favorably with the best available heat dissipation media in heat transfer performance.
