  • Career indecision has long been a phenomenon of interest to parents, faculty, school counselors, and others who advise young adults on their career choices. The earliest work on career indecision focused almost exclusively on the negative consequences that young adults faced as a result of lack of self-insight into their own skills and abilities, lack of specific information about various occupations and labor markets, and fear of commitment to any career path in particular. More recently, researchers have noted that some of the short run negative consequences of early career indecision may ultimately lead to long-term positive consequences, particularly if better person-occupation fit is achieved as a result of young adults' extended search behavior. Extroversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, and openness showed to have negative effects on indecisiveness. In case of lack of job information, only extroversion and emotional stability showed to have negative effects on indecisiveness, and openness showed negative effect. Indecisiveness has negative effect on preparatory job search behavior. Lack of information has negative effect on preparatory job search behavior and active job search behavior.

  • In this paper, we examine American career self-help advice in the context of white-collar labor market changes in the U.S., especially how it tries to motivate and empower white-collar job seekers and how fundamentally flawed this is. In this regard, we focus on What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles, as it is the foundational and representative literature in the field of career self-help advice. We first look at the white-collar labor market changes in the U.S. and the growth of career self-help advice along with its influence. We then show that What Color Is Your Parachute? seeks to motivate and inspire job seekers by defining job searching in individual terms and overlooking its structural nature. From this, we point out the most problematic aspect of career self-held advice, i.e., shifting job search responsibility as well as its outcome solely to individual job seekers, while also making it difficult to scrutinize and understand the broader context affecting job searching.

It has been demonstrated that job crafting, which entails the proactive redesign of work roles, responsibilities, and relationships, empowers employees, and elevates. Research design, data, and methodology - This study employed a tailored search approach with specific terms linked to job crafting and protean career attitudes to ensure a thorough and focused analysis. The keywords include "Job crafting," "protean career attitudes," "career development," and related terms. This strategy uses an organized method to identify, screen, and choose appropriate studies. Result: This study synthesizes prior studies and identifies four critical links between the development of jobs and protean career attitudes. Employers may improve employee growth, engagement, and talent retention by encouraging job customization, recognizing protean workers, cultivating a protean culture, investing in ongoing learning.
