  • This study explored men's choice of fashion as a college major and, subsequently, a non-traditional career path. Such investigation is important to gain a better understanding of the motives and processes of selecting a non-traditional college major and subsequent career path. This research consulted several theoretical frameworks to guide the development of research questions and help interpret the findings of the study. Specifically, our study builds upon Holland's trait theory (1982), Gottfredson's (1981) circumscription theory, Farmer's (1985) model of career motivation, and Simpson's (2005) typology of men's non-traditional career entry. A qualitative method was used to explore men's experiences of selecting fashion as an academic major in college and deciding to pursue a career in the traditionally female-dominated field. Following the analysis of 22 individual interviews with male upperclassmen majoring in fashion, three topical areas emerged and we proposed a model of male students' path to a non-traditional college major. The model explains male students' dynamics of entering a non-traditional college major, the role of personal and social factors in the decision process as well as the role of future career orientation when choosing to study fashion as an academic major.

  • With the increasing severity of the shortage of highly-skilled IT personnel, more and more attention is being paid to the professional career path and systematic career management of IT employees. Although some studies have been conducted to describe the current status of IT personnel, limited attempts have been made to analyze the career paths or career patterns of IT professionals from a longitudinal perspective. In this context, this study explored the job career patterns of IT professionals in Korea and examined their relationship with subjective and objective career success. To identify job career patterns over time, detailed information about jobs and positions were used and an optimal matching analysis (OMA) was conducted to calculate the dissimilarity matrix between employees' career sequences, while a cluster analysis was used to categorize the meaningful groups based on this dissimilarity data. This analysis revealed that career patterns among Korean IT personnel are more varied than previously thought. These career types have a significant relationship with individual profiles, such as age, education, industry and company size, and account for significant variations in the three main career success variables, i.e. quality of life, assessment of software quality, and wage level. It is expected that the findings of this study will contribute to refining the Korean career path so as to retain IT personnel, and raise the need to improve the low quality of life and poor SW work environment of IT personnel.

This study aims to identify the motive of college students' career choices and analyze the relationship between career capabilities and career decision-making in order to provide basic materials that can assist college students in the career decision-making process. To do this, a survey was conducted among college students attending a D university in Busan. A total of 326 survey responses were selected for analysis, and path analysis was conducted using SPSS 25 and AMOS 25. The results of the study are as follows. First, intrinsic motivation for career choice and extrinsic motivation for career choice were found to affect career consideration and career management capabilities, respectively, with statistical significance. Second, career consideration and career path management capabilities influenced both concreteness and confidence, which are elements of career decision-making with statistical significance. Intrinsic motivation for career choice and extrinsic motivation for career choice affected concreteness and confidence in career decision-making with career consideration and career management capabilities as parameters. These findings imply that in order to increase the concreteness and confidence in the career decision-making of undergraduate students, it is necessary to strengthen their career consideration and career management capabilities. As the unemployment rate of youths rises and the types and specialization of jobs increase amid uncertainty in the future employment conditions, undergraduate students face increasing difficulties in career decision-making. The results of this research are expected to be used as basic materials for the career decision-making of undergraduate students, which will assists in career path consultation and guidance in universities.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the educational effects of career guidance classes, which are now included in regular course offerings by universities. To this end, the self-efficacy of college students regarding career decisions and their degree of career maturity was measured as effect variables. The subjects of the study included 33 sophomores who took 15 weeks of career guidance classes provided by four-year universities. Pretest-posttest design and the paired t-test were conducted for verifying the differences before and after taking career guidance courses. According to the results of the analysis, first, university students' self-efficacy in career decision-making was higher after taking the career guidance courses, indicating a statistically significant difference. Second, the t-value for the difference before and after taking the career guidance courses was indicating that there was a slight statistically significant improvement. These results are meaningful in that they proved that career guidance courses in higher education had the educational effects of improving self-efficacy in career path decisions and the career maturity of college students.
