This study is to evaluate the effect of chemical attack on durability and deterioration of lining concrete in tunnel. Surface examination, nondestructive inspection, uniaxial compressive strength test, carbonation test, chloride diffusion test, micro-structural analysis were performed to analyze the deterioration of lining concrete in tunnel constructed 70 years ago. From surface examination results, the tunnel had been repaired and reinforced in several times. It has many cracks, water-leakage, efflorescence and exploitation. Compressive strengths obtained from nondestructive inspection and uniaxial compressive strength test have measured $17.5{\sim}34.7MPa$, and $12.8{\sim}40.3MPa$, respectively. Carbonation depth specimen cored from concrete lining has ranged from 3mm to 27mm. From chloride diffusion test, most specimens have low permeability. And the XRD analysis was able to detect ettringite and thaumasite, which were confirmed by SEM and EDS results to be the causes for the deterioration of lining concrete.

In this study, two phases were conducted to investigate the direct injection of gaseous CO2 into cement mortar. The aim was to advance carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology by harnessing industrial waste CO2 from the domestic ready-mixed concrete industry. In the first phase, the factors influencing the physical properties of cement mortar when using gaseous CO2 were identified. This included a review of materials to achieve physical properties comparable to a reference formulation. As a result of this phase, it was confirmed that traditional approaches, such as adjusting the water-to-cement ratio, had limitations in achieving the desired physical properties. Consequently, the second phase focused on the optimization of CO2-injected mortar. This involved studying the CO2 application and mixing method for cement mortar. Changes in properties were observed when gaseous CO2 was injected into the mortar. The optimal injection quantity and time to enhance the compressive strength of mortar were determinded. As a result, this study indicated that an extra mixing time exceeding 120 seconds was necessary, compared to conventional mortar. The optimal CO2 injection rate was identified as 0.1 to 0.2 % by weight of cement, taking both flowability and compressive strength performance into account. Increasing the CO2 injection time did not further enhance strength. For this approach to be employed as a CCUS technology, additional studies are required, including a microstructural analysis evaluating the amount of immobilized CO2.

In this study, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) were treated in a 5-kg-scale prototype reactor with carbon dioxide (CO2) to enhance their material quality and geotechnical performance. The aggregate crushing value (ACV) and California bearing ratio (CBR) were measured on untreated RCAs and CO2-treated RCAs. After CO2 treatment, the ACV decreased from 35.6% to 33.2%, and the CBR increased from 97.5% to 102.4%. The CO2 treatment caused a reduction of fine particle generation and an increase in bearing capacity through carbonation. When CO2 treatment was performed with mechanical agitation, which provided additional enhancement in mechanical quality, the ACV was reduced further to 30.3%, and the CBR increased to 137.7%. If upscaled effectively, the proposed CO2 treatment technique would be an effective method to reduce carbon emissions in construction industries.
For the preparation of calcium carbonate particles from aqueous $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry, carbonation reaction of aqueous $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry was carried out by batch method the $CO_2$ into reactor filled with aqueous slurry of $Ca(OH)_2$. The concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ varies from 1.00 to 7.00wt%, reactor temperature at 20 and $40^{\circ}C$, and reactor pressure from atmospheric pressure to $6.0kg_f/cm^2$. Crystal structure of calcium carbonate was of calcite, the particle size were about $0.05{\sim}2.0{\mu}m$, and the particle shape was cubic and spindle. When reactor temperature was higher, particle size of calcium carbonate was bigger and particle shape was varied, but reaction rate was increased. When reactor pressure was higher, particle size of calcium carbonate was smaller, particle shape was cubic, and reaction rate was increased.
Jilin highway concrete bridge is located in the center of Jilin City, which is positioned in the middle part in Jilin Province in the east north of China. This bridge crosses the Songhua River and connects the north and the south of Jilin City. The main purpose of damages inspection of the bridge components is to ensure the safety of a bridge and to identify any maintenance, repair, or strengthening which that need to be carried out. The damages that occur in reinforced concrete bridges include different types of cracks, scalling and spalling of concrete, corrosion of steel reinforcement, deformation, excessive deflection, and stain. The main objectives of this study are to inspect the appearance of Jilin highway concrete bridge and describe all the damages in the bridge structural members, and to evaluate the structural performance of the bridge structure under dead and live loads. The tests adopted in this study are: (a) the depth of concrete carbonation test, (b) compressive strength of concrete test, (c) corrosion of steel test, (d) static load test, and (e) dynamic load test. According to the damages inspection of the bridge structure appearance, most components of the bridge are in good conditions with the exception arch waves, spandrel arch, deck pavement of new arch bridge, and corbel of simply supported bridge which suffer from serious damages. Load tests results show that the deflection, strain, and cracks development satisfy the requirements of the standards.

This study evaluated the durability of nuclear power plant concrete. The main parameters were the water-to-binder ratio and admixture type. The results revealed that high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBS) concrete had lower initial strength, while the strength reached higher after 28 days. On the other hand, the initial strength of fly ash blended concrete was high, but the long-term strength of the robbery was low. The measured durability of GGBS blended concrete was found to be better than that of the existing concrete mix for use in the construction of nuclear power plants. Especially, the GGBS blended concrete was more durable than the fly ash blended concrete in terms of chloride attack, carbonation resistivity and freezing-thawing durability in low compressive strength. The effects of concrete compressive strength according to gamma rays were minor.

Cement industry is typical carbon-emission industry. If the industrial by-products(granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash, etc.) are used a large amount, it might be able to reduce cement consumption and mitigate carbon emissions. In this case, however, decrease of early strength is relatively large. Therefore, there is a limitation in increase of the amount of substitute. Considering these circumstances, it would be a good solution to reduce carbon emissions in cement industry to improve the performances of mixed cement through proper alkali-activation in Portland blended cement using GGBFS or fly ash. Therefore, this study prepared concrete in ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities with an addition of a binder which used 2.0% modified alkali sulfate activator after mixing Portland cement, GGBFS and fly ash in the ratio of 4:4:2 and assessed its basic properties. The results found the followings: The use of modified alkali-sulfate activator slightly reduced slump and shortened setting time. As a result, bleeding capacity decreased while early strength improved. In addition, there is no big difference in carbonation resistance. It appears that there should be continued experiments and analyses on the related long-term aged specimens.

Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is the greatest contributor among the major greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, substantial efforts for the control and reduction of $CO_2$ emissions, including increased efficiency of fossil fuel energy usage, development of energy sources with lower carbon content, and increased reliability on alternative energy sources, are being performed worldwide. However, development and industrial application of $CO_2$ sequestration techniques are needed to meet the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. Among the $CO_2$ sequestration methods developed, geological sequestration methods such as the storage in deep aquifers, deep coal seams and oil and gas reservoirs and the mineral carbonation is considered most favorable because of its stability and environmental effectiveness. In this review, geochemical concepts and technologic development of geologic sequestration technology, especially the storage in deep aquifers and the mineral carbonation, are discussed. The weakness and strengths for each of geologic sequestration methods, are also reviewed.

In this paper, the behaviors of tunnel damaged by fire, the diagnostic techniques for evaluating tunnel stability are presented. Also two fireproof construction methods are recommended. Three tunnels damaged by fire were analyzed to evaluate the structural stability. From the these analyzed, it is recommended that surface checking, rebound number of concrete by Schmidt Hammer, and carbonation of concrete are essential to evaluate the engineering properties of concrete in tunnel structure damaged by fire. On the basis of case studies of tunnel fire collected by ITA, the change of concrete and steel strengths by fire are explained, and numerical analysis, which was performed on culvert and circle tunnel, shows that distribution of temperature in the tunnel is dependant upon tunnel shape. Two fireproof construction methods using panel and punching metal are introduced to protect the tunnel by fire.
In nucleation assisted crystallization process formed $CO_2$ leaves as colloid gas and is used as the template by the rapidly growing crystals in the nucleation site. This emulsion of $CaCO_3$ micro-crystals & $CO_2$ micro-bubbles forms hollow particles. Formed hollow particles are double walled, both internal and external faces belonging to the cleavage aragonites which separate the surrounding water from the enclosed gas cavity. Hence, the reverse reaction of $CO_2$ with water forming Carbonic Acid is not possible and the pH stability is maintained. In fact every excess $CaCO_3$ crystals are buffering any carbonic acid left over. This $CO_2$ based nucleation technology prevents scale formation in water channels, but it also helps to reduce the previously formed scales. This process takes out water dissolved $CO_2$ in almost-visible micro-bubbles forms that helps reducing previously formed scale over a period of time (depends on the usage period). The aragonite crystals can't form scale because of its stable molecular structure and neutral surface electro potentiality.
