  • In this work, mechanical characteristics of stainless steel diaphragm have been studied as a potential robust substrate and a diaphragm material for micromachined devices. Lamination process techniques combined with traditional micromachining processes have been adopted as suitable fabrication technologies. To illustrate these principles, capacitive pressure sensors based on a stainless steel diaphragm have been designed, fabricated and characterized. The fabrication process for stainless steel micromachined devices keeps the membrane and substrate being at the environment of 8.65MPa pressure and $175^{\circ}C$ for a half hour and then subsequently cooled to $25^{\circ}C$. Each sensor uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated stainless steel film as a suspended movable plate and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. The finite element method is adopted to investigate residual stresses formed in the process. Besides, out-of-plane deflections are calculated under pressures on the diaphragm. The sensitivity of the device fabricated using these technologies is 9.03 ppm $kPa^{-1}$ with a net capacitance change of 0.14 pF over a range 0$\sim$180 kPa.

  • This paper reports the effect of adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive material to the composition of an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), a process to remove salt from water using ionic adsorption and desorption driven by external applied voltage. RGO can be synthesized in an inexpensive way by the reduction and exfoliation of GO, and removing the oxygen-containing groups and recovering a conjugated structure. GO powder can be obtained from the modification of Hummers method and reduced into RGO using a thermal method. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of RGO material were evaluated and its desalination performance was tested with a CDI unit cell with a potentiostat and conductivity meter, by varying the applied voltage and feed rate of the salt solution. The performance of RGO was compared to graphite as a conductive material in a CDI electrode. The result showed RGO can increase the capacitance, reduce the equivalent series resistance, and improve the electrosorption capacity of CDI electrode.

  • Electrode pattern effects on the capacitive humidity sensor were investigated. The fabrication of the capacitive humidity sensor was formed with three steps. The bottom electrode was formed on the silicon substrate with Pt/Ti thin layer by using shadow mask and e-beam evaporator. The photo sensitive polyimide was formed on the bottom electrode by using photolithography process as a humidity sensitive thin film. The upper electrode was formed on the polyimide thin film with Pt/Ti thin layer by using e-beam evaporator and lift-off method. Three electrode patterns, such as circle, square, and triangle pattern, were used and changed the sizes to investigate the effects. The capacitances of the sensors were decreased 622 to 584 pF with the area decreament of patterns 250,000 to $196,250{\mu}m^2$. From these results, a capacitive humidity sensor with photo sensitive polyimide is expected to be applied to a high sensitive humidity sensor.

  • This paper dealt with a partial discharge (PD) detection method for insulation diagnosis in cast-resin transformers. To detect PD pulse, a planar-capacitive probe was designed and fabricated. The probe has no insulation problem and can be installed on cast-resin transformers even in operation since it does not connect with high voltage conductor. The PD measurement system consists of the capacitive probe, a coupling network of 100 [kHz] low-cutoff frequency, and an amplifier with a gain of 40 [dB] and a frequency bandwidth of 500 [Hz]~45 [MHz]. A plane-needle and a plane-plane electrode system were fabricated to simulate insulation defects in a cast-resin transformer. Sensitivity of the PD measurement system, which is evaluated by a standard calibrator was 0.35 [mV/pC] for positive and 0.45 [mV/pC] for negative, respectively. The PD detection by the capacitive probe was less sensitive than that by a coupling capacitor according to IEC 60270, but we could analyze the magnitude and the phase distribution of PD pulse.

  • Due to the mismatched line impedance among distributed generation units (DGs) and uncontrolled harmonic current, the droop controller has a number of problems such as inaccurate reactive power sharing and voltage distortion at the point of common coupling (PCC). To solve these problems, this paper proposes a resistive-capacitive virtual impedance control method. The proposed control method modifies the DG output impedance at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies to compensate the mismatched line impedance among DGs and to regulate the harmonic current. Finally, reactive power sharing is accurately achieved, and the PCC voltage distortion is compensated. In addition, adaptively controlling the virtual impedance guarantees compensation performance in spite of load changes. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was verified by experimental results.

  • This paper discusses numerically and experimenally several design parameters for the plate- type capacitive displacement sensor. The influenences of shape of this sensor on the sensitivity are numerically analyzed with the charge density method. Using many test sensor plates of different shape for verifing the validity of this method can not guarantee the repetibility of experiments. Therefore we made specially the test sensor plate so that experiments of effects of shape of this sensor on sensitivity can be done with only that plate. Results from these experiments agree well with those from numerical analysis.

  • For measuring out the submicron order straightness, a precision measuring device is developed in this paper. The device is constructed with a hydrostatic feed table and a capacitive type sensor which is mounted to the feed table. Straightness is acquired as substracting the motion error of feed table from the measured profile with probe. Motion error of feed table is simultaneously compensated upto 0.120${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of linear motion error and 0.20arcsec of angular motion error using the active controlled capillary. Reversal method and strai호t-edge is used fur estimating the measuring accuracy and from the experimental result, it is verified that the device has the measuring accuracy 0.030m. Also, through the practical application on the measurement of ground surface, it is confirmed that the device is very effective to measure the submicron order straightness.

  • The insulation strength between contacts after current interruption to the transient recovery voltage i.e., the dielectric recovery strength should be estimated for the evaluation of the small capacitive current interruption capability. Many authors have used theoretical and semi-experimental approaches to evaluate the transient breakdown voltage after the current interruption. Moreover, an empirical equation, which is obtained from a series of tests, has been used to estimated the dielectric recovery strength. Un this paper, the theoretical method which is generated from the streamer theory has been applied to real circuit breakers in order to evaluated the interruption capability. The results of analysis have been compared with the test results and the reliability has been investigated.

  • 3D-IC is a novel semiconductor packaging technique stacking dies to improve the performance as well as the overall size. TSV is ideal for 3D-IC because it is convenient for stacking and excellent in electrical characteristics. However, due to high-density and micro-size of TSVs, they should be tested with a non-invasive manner. Thus, we introduce a TSV test method on test prober without a direct contact in this paper. A capacitive coupling effect between a probe tip and TSV is used to discriminate small TSV faults like voids and pin-holes. Through EM simulation, we can verify the size of eye-patterns with various frequencies is good for TSV test tools and non-contact test will be promising.

  • Nickel sulfide (NiS) is one of the most promising candidates as an electrode material for supercapacitors due to its good capacitive properties, high electrical conductivity and low cost. In addition to the development of the new electrode materials, nanostructuring the electrode surface is one of the main issues in enhancing the capacitive performance of the supercapacitors because the increased surface area can improve the charge transfer and energy storage processes occurring at the electrode surface. However, most nanofabrication techniques require complicated and delicate nanoprocesses, and hence are not suitable for practical use. In this work, we developed a simple method to fabricate nanostructured NiS electrodes by depositing NiS onto $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. First, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were spin-coated on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate, and then NiS layers were deposited onto the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles by consecutive dip-coatings in the solutions containing nickel and sulfur precursors. This nanostructured NiS electrode showed significantly improved capacitive properties compared to the electrode of NiS films deposited without $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The asymmetric full-cell supercapacitor with this nanostructured NiS electrode and activated carbon electrode was also fabricated and investigated.
