  • Complementary Filter is commonly used in signal processing method for real-time position measurement. Butterworth filter characteristic has a uniform gain in the pass band, the blocking band has a good blocking characteristics. Therefore, we propose a method of designing a complementary filter having a characteristic of Butterworth filter characteristic. By setting the appropriate filter coefficients in the simulation it appears to improve the performance of the filter. In the experiment it shows a real-time signal processing is possible by using the calculated filter coefficients in the simulation.

  • This paper is a study on the performance of the stable cascading BPF. There are generally two methods of designing IIR filter, which are a direct method and an indirect one. The indirect design method that is transformed into the BPF by frequency transformation using the prototype analog LPF which is satisfied for designing specifications is applied to this study. As typical prototype analog LPFs, there are the Butterworth filter, the Chebyshev filter and the elliptic filter. In this study, we connect the frequency transformed BPFs (to the cascade form) which have been converted from the stable Butterworth filter and Chebyshev filter. Three classified simulations are conducted in this study, which are the cascading Butterworth BPF Only, the cascading Chebyshev BPF Only and the cascading Butterworth and Chebyshev BPFs. As a result of the simulation, this study shows that a ripple size of the cascading Chebyshev BPF Only is about 1[dB] smaller than that of the cascading Butterworth and Chebyshev BPFs and also the skirt characteristic of the cascading Chebyshev BPF in the transition band is most outstanding and has the widest bandwidth. The result of performance comparison shows the validity of specifications required in the workplace.

  • A Chebyshev filter is well known for having a sharp skirt characteristic and equi-ripple. On the other hand, a Butterworth filter has a smooth skirt characteristic and maximally flat ripple. This paper analyzes the skirt characteristics of the filters with the cascade connection. The paper deals with the Chebyshev BPF, Cascading Chebyshev BPF, Butterworth BPF, Cascading Butterworth*Chebyshev BPF. First of all, the paper designs the prototype analog LPF in order to analyze skirt characteristics of the BPFs. Then the paper does the frequency transformation into the BPFs and tests the BPFs with cascading them. As a result, the skirt characteristics of the Chebyshev BPF was the sharpest and those of the Cascading Chebyshev BPF, Butterworth BPF, Cascading Butterworth*Chebyshev BPF was superior in order. The validity of the paper was confirmed through minute measurements of test results.

  • This study is focusing on ripple elimination in the band pass filter. There are generally two design methods in IIR filter design, which are a direct method and an indirect one. The indirect design method that designs the digital IIR LPF using the prototype analog LPF is applied to this study. A Butterworth filter and a Chebyshev filter are the typical prototype analog LPFs. This study shows characteristics of the digital IIR LPFs that are transformed from the prototype analog LPFs. The designed Butterworth and Chebyshev IIR LPFs are also designed as the band pass filters by frequency transformation in order to compare with the proposed cascading Chebyshev BPFs. This study shows frequency characteristics between the transformed IIR BPFs and the proposed cascading Chebyshev BPFs as well. The proposed cascading Chebyshev BPF is designed by cascading the different orders of Chebyshev BPFs. The aspect of the cascading filter is offsetting the ripples to descend them while the pass band ripples of the Chebyshev filter are ascending and vice versa. The designed cascading Chebyshev filter shows the flatness and the sharpness, which represent the advantages of Butterworth filter in the pass band and of Chebyshev filter in the transition band respectively. This result verifies the validity of the designed filter.

  • This paper is focusing on the comparison of different kinds of BPFs(Band Pass Filters) passing signals with a particular frequency band. According to the different classifications, features and target application systems, BPF has many types. Chebyshev filter which has a steep slope and a few ripples, and Butterworth filter which has no ripple but gentle slope are the most typical BPFs. The ideal filter is flat in the passband and the slope in the transition band is perpendicular. In this paper, we suggest the cascading Chebyshev BPF with the advantages of the Chebyshev filter and the Butterworth filter simultaneously to make a closest filter to an ideal filter. The proposing BPF is the tenth Chebyshev BPF cascading the fourth and the sixth, and it is designed as the tenth cascading Chebyshev BPF. To measure the performance of the designing filter, we have compared and analyzed the tenth Chebyshev filter with the tenth Butterworth filter. As a result, the tenth cascading Chebyshev BPF has decreased the ripple more than 1/4 [dB] in the passband. Finally, the output of the simulation showed the validity of the proposing cascading Chebyshev filter.

  • While the oversampling sigma-delta ADCs are known to have high resolution, they often suffer from SNDR losses when operated at a very high data clock. This paper presents a design and implementation of a decimation filter that provides minimum distortion at passband for high-speed sigma-delta ADC. The proposed digital decimation filter employs a butterworth structure, which is a type of an IIR filter. To evaluate the performance of the proposed decimation filter, we implemented a 1-bit, third-order, OSR=64 sigma-delta modulator followed by the proposed decimation filter. Using the simulation ad measurement, we compared the performance of the proposed decimation filter with a conventional CIC(cascaded integrator comb) decimation filter, which is commonly used in most sigma-delta ADCs. The measurement results show that the proposed decimation filter presents substantially lower distortion at passband and thus can provide must higher SNDR.

  • Purpose: After I-131 therapy, SPECT/CT is useful in identifying location of thyroid remnants and metastasis of thyroid cancers. An excessive uptake of thyroid leads to a ringing artifact in the SPECT images. The aim of this study is to investigate and suggest a proper post filters to remove ringing artifact and produce better image quality. Materials and Methods: A low-cost, customized thyroid-mimicking phantom, consisting of an acrylic bottle and a hollow sphere was used for SPECT/CT Discovery (GE Healthcare, USA). It was filled with I-131 solution. The ratio of hollow sphere to background were varied as 50:1, 200:1, 1000:1 and 4000:1. Acquired images were reconstructed by OSEM (2 iterations, 10 subsets) with and without Evolution (resolution recovery correction, GE). Three different post-filters were applied; Butterworth (cut off: 0.38 to 0.58 with intervals of 0.05), Hanning (cut off: 0.8 to 1 with intervals of 0.05) and Gaussian (FWHM: 3 to 5 with intervals of 0.5) filters. Contrast, background variability, air area variability, and full width half maximum (FWHM) were compared. Results: Higher contrasts were obtained from the SPECT images with Evolution than without Evolution. In the case of images without Evolution, image distortion such as star artifact was generated. For all sphere-to-background ratio, the Butterworth filter showed better constrasts and FWHMs than other two filters, but the ringing artifact was still generated in all studies except 50:1 and it was decreased as cutoff value was increased. The ringing artifact didn't appear with Hanning and Gaussian filters at all studies, however constrats and FWHMs with Gaussian was worse than Hanning filter. For the images having ringing artifacts, the background variability and air area variability were increased. Conclusion: In this study, we suggested that it is desirable to use Hanning filter when the ringing artifact is generated and to use Butterworth filter when ringing artifact is not generated in I-131 SPECT.

  • This study examined the order of the Butterworth filter for the correlation on the sensitivity of the receiver in the receiver of an optical system. In the general case, the sensitivity of the receiver is increased if the order of the filter was increased more. This is because increasing the order of the filter response of the normalized frequency of the filter is similar to the rectangular wave. For that reason, the method used to increase the order of the filter increases the sensitivity of the receiver. On the other hand, a method of increasing the order of the filter and makes the system complicated increases the cost of the system. This study examined the correlation between the order of the sensitivity of the receiver filter and to configure the system by simply looking for ways to reduce the cost of the system. The simulation results showed that increasing the order of the filter resulted in a receiver that can determine if the sensitivity is raised. In addition, the order of the Butterworth filter range that does not reduce the sensitivity of the receiver was 2. Therefore, it will be possible to implement an inexpensive optical system of the receiver using the data from this study.

  • An active RC 2nd order Butterworth filter suitable for a baseband channel-selection filter of a direct conversion receiver is presented. The linearity of the 2nd order Butterworth filter is analyzed. In order to improve the linearity of the filter, the operational amplifiers should have a high linear gain and low 3rd harmonic, and the filter should be designed to have large feedback factor. This second order Butterworth filter achieves-14dBV in-channel (400kHz, 500kHz) IIP3, +29dBV out-channel (10MHz, 20.2MHz) IIP3 and 15.6 $nV/\sqrt{Hz}$ input-referred noise and dissipates 10.8mW from a 2.7-V supply. The analysis and experimental results are in good agreement
