Three dimensional(3D) topological insulators(TIs) of Bi binary alloys are characterized by a bulk energy gap with strong spin-orbit coupling and metallic surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. It was reported that film forms of such materials were advantageous over bulk forms due to less defect density and better crystallinity. So far, the films have been prepared on several substrates including semiconductors and graphene. But, there were no studies on metal substrates. For electronic transport experiments and device applications, it is necessary to know epitaxial relation between TIs and metal electrodes. In this study, Atomically flat films of Bi2Se3 were grown on a Au(111) metal substrate by in-situ molecular beam epitaxy. Using home-built scanning tunneling microscope, we observed hexagonal atomic structures which corresponded to the outmost selenium atomic layer of Bi2Se3. Triangular-shaped defects known as Selenium vacancy were also found.

Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) using thin piezoelectric films can be made as monolithic integrated devices with compatibility to semiconductor process, leading to small size, low cost and high Q RF circuit elements with wide applications in communications area. This paper presents an MMIC compatible suspended FBAR using SOI micromachining. It is possible to make a single crystal silicon membrane using a SOI wafer In fabricating active devices, SOI wafer offers advantage which removes the substrate loss. FBAR was made on the 12㎛ silicon membrane. Electrode and Piezoelectric materials were deposited by RF magnetron sputter. The maximum resonance frequency of FBAR was shown at 2.5GHz range. The reflection loss, K$^2$$\_$eff/, Q$\_$serise/ and Q$\_$parallel/ in that frequency were 1.5dB, 2.29%, 220 and 160, respectively.

Recent Class requirements and IMO recommendations concerning Hull Strength Monitoring (HSM) have prompted an increasing number of shipowner to adopt monitoring systems on bulk carriers and tanker. Such systems are designed to give warning when stress levels and the frequency and magnitude of ship motions approach levels which require corrective action. When fitted these systems provide enhanced operational safety and efficiency. This paper describes a development beyond the standard BMT HSM system through the integration of stress, motion and radar-based sea state monitoring with powerful, on-board, artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The latter utilises conceptual clustering techniques as an aid to pattern recognition in stress, fatigue. motion and sea state data clusters. This, in turn, provides additional operational guidance for ship's staff. Feedback from applications of the standard BMT HSM and extended HSM systems on board the British Steel Bulk Shipping fleet is described.
Block copolymers that two or more polymer chains are covalently linked have drawn much attention due to self-assembly into nanometer-sized morphology such as lamellae, cylinders, spheres, and gyroids. In this article, we first summarize the phase behavior of block copolymers in bulk and thin films and some applications for new functional nanomaterials. Then, future perspectives on block copolymers are described.

In this paper, the recent progress of RF MEMS research for wireless/mobile communications is reviewed. The RF MEMS components reviewed in this paper include RF MEMS switches, tunable capacitors, high Q inductors, and thin film bulk acoustic resonators (TFBARs) to become core components for constructing miniaturized on chip RF transceiver with multi-band and multi-mode operation. Specific applications are also discussed for each of these components with emphasis on for miniaturization, integration, and performance enhancement of existing and future wireless transceiver developments.

For the past three decades, extensive research has been performed in the surface design of new polymers for a variety of medical applications. Great progress in therapeutics and diagnostics can be attributed to these scientific advances in biomedical polymers. A variety of bioinert materials or bioactive materials using drugs, cells, and growth factors are widely utilized for the implants, devices and tissue regeneration. These materials provide an improved biocompatible materials to host, to significantly decrease or increase the host/tissue/blood response to the foreign materials. In the future, biomaterials will play a different role in modern therapeutics. New materials will be tailored to interact more on a protein and cellular level to achieve high degree of biocompatibility, biospecificity and bioacitivity. In this presentation, various biocompatible materials based on surface/bulk engineering will be demonstrated, which can be utilized as therapeutics implants and therapeutic vehicles for biologically active molecules such as cell, protein /peptide and gene.
Fluorescent nanoparticles are characterized by their unique properties such as luminescence, optical transparency, and sensitivity to various chemical environments. For example, semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots), which are nanophosphors doped with transition metal or rare earth ions, can be classified as fluorescent nanoparticles. Tuning their optical and physico-chemical properties can be carried out by considering and taking advantage of nanoscale effects. For instance, quantum confinement causes a much higher fluorescence with nanoparticles than with their bulk counterparts. Recently, various types of fluorescent nanoparticles have been synthesized to extend their applications to other fields. In this study, State-of-the-art fluorescent nanoparticles are reviewed with emphasis on their analytical and anti-counterfeiting applications and synthesis processes. Moreover, the fundamental principles behind the exceptional properties of fluorescent nanoparticles are discussed.
This paper presents a comprehensive review of metasurface technology, focusing on its significant role in extraordinary flat optic functionalities. Traditional optical components, though optimized, are bulky and less congruent with modern integrated electromagnetic and photonic systems. Metasurfaces, recognized as the 2D counterparts of bulk metamaterials, offer solutions with their planar, ultra-thin, and lightweight structures. Their meta-atoms are adept at introducing abrupt shifts in optical properties, paving the way for high-precision light manipulation. By introducing the key design principles of these meta-atoms, such as the magnetic dipole and Pancharatnam-Berry phase, various applications in wavefront shaping and beam forming with simple amplitude/phase manipulation and advanced applications including retroreflectors, Janus metasurfaces, multiplexing of optical wavefronts, data encryption, and metasurfaces for quantum applications are reviewed.
Mesoporous materials are a sort of promising materials with a wide spectrum of applications due to their unique well-defined porous structures that provide high surface area and controllable pore size. Among mesoporous materials, periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) are highly emerging materials in sense of applications due to their large pore sizes and organic functionality in the frame. The organic functional groups in the frameworks of these solids allow tuning of the surface properties and modification of the bulk properties of the material. This article provides a comprehensive overview of PMOs and discusses their different functionalities, morphology and applications, such as catalysis, environmental applications, and adsorption, for which PMOs have been used after their discovery. The review article will provide fundamental understanding of PMOs and their advanced applications to readers.

Thermoelectric materials have been the topic of intensive research due to their unique dual capability of directly converting heat into electricity or electrical power into cooling or heating. Bismuth telluride ($Bi_2Te_3$) is the best-known commercially used thermoelectric material in the bulk form for cooling and power generation applications In this work we focus on the large scale synthesis of nanostructured undoped bulk nanostructured $Bi_2Te_3$ materials by employing a novel bottom-up solution-based chemical approach. Spark plasma sintering has been employed for compaction and sintering of $Bi_2Te_3$ nanopowders, resulting in relative density of $g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$ while preserving the nanostructure. The average grain size of the final compacts was obtained as 200 nm after sintering. An improved NS bulk undoped $Bi_2Te_3$ is achieved with sintered at $400^{\circ}C$ for 4 min holding time.
