  • Building construction education requires training and experience. While there have been many means of education, virtual reality (VR) can be applied as a complement for building construction education. Considering the characteristics of building construction education, interactive content based on VR technology is expected to raise the effectiveness of traditional education. This research conducted a survey to examine the applicability of VR technology to building construction education and provided basic information by prioritizing work types for educational content.

  • Currently, there is a lack of studies on the directionality of architectural engineering education. This study has analyzed the opening and operation of courses relating to building construction in Korea universities. It was researched that the most common building construction courses opened in universities were 'building construction' and 'materials.' Courses are also being opened in universities by reflecting social demands. Upon analysis of the operation of the educational process of building construction, it was displayed that projects and examinations were conducted as the methods of assessment in courses at many universities. Additionally, there were universities that included quizzes and discussions in their methods of assessment. This study is expected to be used as data for studying an innovative means of educating architecture.

  • The construction industry is considered the most hazardous industry globally. Therefore, safety education is crucial for raising the safety awareness of construction workers working at construction sites and creating a safe working environment. However, the current safety education method and tools cannot provide trainees with realistic and practical experiences that might help better safety awareness in practice. A metaverse, a real-time network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection, was created for more interactive communication, collaboration, and coordination between users. Several previous studies have noted that the metaverse has excellent potential for improved safety education performance, but its required functions and practical applications have not been thoroughly researched. In order to fill the research gap, this paper reviewed the potential benefits of a metaverse based on the current research and suggested its application for safety education purposes. This paper scrutinized the metaverse's key functions, particularly its information and knowledge sharing function and reality capture function. Then, the authors created a metaverse prototype based on the two key functions described above. The main contribution of this paper is reviewing the potential benefits of a metaverse for safety education. A realistic and feasible metaverse platform should be developed in future studies, and its impact on safety education should be quantitatively verified.

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ratio of online education in domestic universities has rapidly increased. This research has developed a curriculum that can be blended with online education-especaally for building construction. The realities of building construction education provided by domestic universities during the COVID-19 pandemic were analyzed. It was revealed that approximately 66.1% of the education was provided online, while approximately 33.9% of the education was provided in the form of face-to-face lectures. It was thus found that the ratio of online education had rapidly increased. We developed a blended learning curriculum of building construction subjects. The curriculum focused on weekly education procedures and the contents of education for each 15-week period. The curriculum proposed by this research could be applied flexibly according to the education goals of the instructor and the learning capabilities of the students.

  • Due to the effects of COVID-19 and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, construction engineering education has been required to change. As part of efforts to respond to changes, innovative teaching methods such as team-based learning have been introduced, but specific measures are still lacking. In this regard, this study proposed plans for building construction curriculum operation applied with team-based learning, building construction course operation applied with team-based learning, and building construction course grade evaluation applied with team-based learning. It is expected that the proposed operation plans can be used in educational settings where team-based learning is to be applied in a changing class environment.

  • As I mentioned, education cause accounts for a great part of accident cause. Therefore safety education is the important safety measure to be efficiently used for accident prevention. Domestic construction sites focusing big companies make an effort for safety education, but it is short of reducing construction accident with education applying educational contents to actual work. This study analyzed the education contents in domestic construction companies to provide basic contents for improving efficient education method, and drew a limitation of education contents used in construction cites.

  • Safety education at the tertiary level prepares students to enter construction industry with adequate safety knowledge; then accidents can be prevented proactively. However, safety subject has not been paid adequate attention in universities and most institutional safety programs consider safety matters in isolation. Meanwhile, anatomical theory in the medicine field has been successfully adopted and proved potential advantageous in various scientific disciplines. With this regard, this study proposes a visualization based Building Anatomy Model (BAM) for construction safety education, which utilizes the anatomical theory in order to improve student's safety knowledge and practical skill. This BAM consists of two modules: 1) Knowledge Acquisition Module (KAM) aims to deliver safety knowledge to students through building anatomy models; 2) Practical Experience Module (PEM) where students safely perform construction activities by using the system to improve safety skill. The system trial is validated with virtual scenarios derived from real accidents cases. This study emphasizes the visualization based building anatomy model would be a powerful pedagogical method to provide effectively safety knowledge and practical skill for students, as a result, safety competence of students would be enhanced.

  • In order to respond to changes in the industrial environment such as the 4th industrial revolution, university education also needs active educational innovation efforts. This study proposed a construction construction hybrid curriculum that can actively utilize online education in the direction of educational innovation in domestic universities. The hybrid curriculum was based on online learning through lecture videos used in team-based learning. The hybrid curriculum additionally allows learners to choose their learning methods. In a hybrid class, learners can choose the class participation method they want from offline classroom or online real-time. Hybrid classes are considered to strengthen learners' options and take a step forward in learner-centered education.
