  • A brittle fracture is one of the source of structural damage and can bring a fatal accident. The inner shell of LNG storage tank should be designed and applied to construction by ensure that no brittle crack will occur under -162℃ condition. In point of view of fracture mechanics brittle fracture in the structure could be referred as crack initiation and crack arrest. It should be designed no crack initiation. However, in the unlikely event of a brittle fracture occurring, a back-up function of arresting the brittle crack should be included for the design. In this paper investigated the characteristics of 9% Ni steel thick plates of having a capability of arresting brittle cracks under the thickness of 33 mm, 37mm, 40 mm. First, charpy test has performed to evaluate the fundamental brittle impact fracture property of 9% Ni steel under the temperature of 24℃, -162℃ and -196℃. In addition, Duplex ESSO tests were also performed under -196℃ to evaluate the capability of crack arrest for 9% Ni steel. From the experiments results, it was confirmed that all the thickness of 9% Ni steel plates exhibits sufficient brittle crack arrest fracture toughness for the application of LNG storage tank as a inner shell.

  • Welded joint generally has heterogeneity of strength, material, and fracture toughness and it is important to understand the characteristics of material strength and fracture of welded joint considering heterogeneous effect. Characteristics of strength and fracture of an undermatched joint under dynamic loading was studied by round-bar tension tests and thermal elastic-plastic analyses in this paper. The strength and fracture of the undermatched joints should be evaluated based on the effects of the strain rate and the temperature including temperature rise during the dynamic loading. The differences of fracture characteristics like such as ductile-to-brittle transition behavior are well precisely explained from the stress-strain distribution obtained by numerical analysis.

  • In spite of 6.8 magnitude and the neighborhood of the epicenter, the steel moment frame survived after Northridge earthquake without collapse or casualties. However, following investigation revealed that there were severe damages at the column-weld interface of welded flange-bolted web (WFBW) steel moment connection, which was believed to be economic and safe from earthquakes based on experience and past tests. In this paper, this unexpected brittle fracture of the steel moment connection is explored using linear elastic fracture mechanics and post-Northridge tests. A method to predict the brittle fracture strength of the steel moment connection is proposed. Using this method, the failure mode of the WFBW connection and reduced beam section (RBS) connection are presented.

  • In the case of Ni/Au finished pad on the package side, the solder joint of SnAgCu system can bring brittle fracture under impact load such as drop test. Therefore, it's difficult to prevent the brittle fracture of lead-free solder, by controlling Cu content. The failure locus existing on the interface between $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4\;and\;(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ IMC layers must be changed to other site in order to avoid brittle fracture due to impact load. It was not found any clear evidence that there were two IMC layers exist. But it was strongly assumed these were two layers which have different Cu-Ni composition. From the above analysis it was assumed that Cu atom in the solder alloy or substrate seemed to affect IMC composition and cause to IMC brittle fracture.

  • The instrumented Charpy impact test is generally used to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for varying engineering materials. However, the test is known to be difficult to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for very brittle materials because of the small crack initiation load. To evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness of verybrittle materials, it is necessary to develop a load sensitive instrumented tup. In this study, a polymer tup, which has small Young's modulus, is used for the instrumented Charpyimpact test and a proper testing method is developed. The results show that the developed method can measure rapidly changing loads from the moment of contact between the tup and the specimen to dynamic crack initation of the very brittle materials.

  • A study concerning the strength of brittle materials is presented in this paper. The failure behavior was investigated examining the plane of the crack after the failure and comparing the results obtained with those deriving from the fracture mechanics theory. Although the proposed methods are valid in general for brittle materials, the experiment was performed on glass because the results are more significant for this. Glass elements of various sizes and different edge finishes were subjected to bending tests until collapsing. The bending results were studied in terms of failure load and energy dissipation, and the fracture surfaces were examined by means of microscopic analysis, in which the depth of the flaw and the mirror radius of the fracture were measured and the strength was calculated. These results agreed with those obtained from the fracture mechanics analysis.

  • Fracture toughness of heterogeneous brittle materials such as poly crystalline ceramics used to present the size (thickness) effect as well as statistically distributed results. There is belief that both(size effect and scatter) must be associated with each other. However, no generally accepted theory has been established so far. Using statistical approach, a probabilistic modeling for the fracture toughness which describes the thickness effect was attempted in this paper, Weibull distribution of specific fracture energy(SFE)at local areas and Griffith criterion are applied to the model. In addition, the newly developed model was verified with experimental results of alumina.

  • Analysis of the fracture surface is one of the most important methods for determining the cause of equipment structural failure. Whether structural failure is caused by impact or fatigue is necessary information in industrial fields. For ferrous and non-ferrous metal materials, two fracture phenomena are generated on the fracture surface: ductile and brittle fractures. In this study, machine learning predicts whether the fracture is based on ductile or brittle when structurural failure is caused by impact. The K-means algorithm calculates this ratio by clustering the brittle and ductile fracture data from a photograph of the impact fracture surface, unlike the existing method, which calculates the fracture surface ratio by comparison with the grid type or the reference fracture surface shape.

  • The reinforcing effects of ductile short-fiber reinforced brittle matrix composites are studied by, measuring flexural strength, fracture toughness and impact energy as functions of fiber volume fraction and length. The parameters of fracture mechanics, K and J are applied to assess fracture toughness and bridging stress. It is found that fracture toughness is greatly, influenced by the bridging stress ill which fiber pull-out is occur. For the reinforcing effects as functions of fiber volume fraction($V_f$ = 1, 2, 3 %) and length(L = 3, 6. 10cm), the flexural strength is maximum at $V_f$ = 1% and both fracture toughness.

  • Recently, a demand of ferritic STS is increasing rapidly in automobile exhaust system. Exhaust manifolds are the part nearest to the engine so that the material is exposed to high temperature exhaust gas. Excellent heat resistant properties, especially high temperature strength, thermal fatigue resistance and high corrosion resistance are necessary for these parts. STS429L contains 15 weight percent of Cr and low Mo, so has good price competitive. And it has excellent high temperature strength and corrosion resistance, so receives attentions as material that applying to exhaust manifold. In tensile test of lap joint welded STS 429L, most of specimens are failed in base metal, but occurs brittle fracture in weld metals at some specimens in the face of good welding conditions. In the process of tensile test, lap joint welded STS429L specimens are transformed locally. The brittle fracture occurs that local transforming area exists in weld metals. But, butt welding specimens made by same materials showed ductile fracture in tensile test and bending test. In this study, suppose the reason of brittle fracture is in the combined local transform and tensile stress, through analysis of bead geometry, evaluate geometrical factor of brittle fracture in lap joint welded STS429L.
