  • This research explores the development of [100]-textured barium titanate (BaTiO3, BT) ceramics using sodium bismuth titanate (Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15, NBiT) templates, aimed at leveraging the inherent high dielectric property of BT. However, the attempted texturing was unsuccessful, primarily due to bismuth diffusion from the NBiT templates into the BT matrix below the sintering temperature, at 1,000℃. Systematical exploration about the cause of the failure is involved and alternative approaches are proposed in detail to overcome the challenge. These findings contribute to the understanding of techniques and conditions for textured ceramic fabrication and highlight the need for further research in this area.

  • The relaxor ferroelectric feature in lead-free perovskite oxides, where the dipoles are randomly oriented and they can be feasibly aligned parallel to the external bias, is attracting lots of attention in the field of piezoelectric materials science, since it is one of candidates to replace the toxic lead-based materials that are still being commercially used. However, the origin of relaxor characteristic and its related atomic structure are still ambiguous. In this study, $Na_{1/2}Bi_{1/2}TiO_3$, chosen as a model relaxor system, was found to exhibit a cationic-disordered atomic structure; and furthermore the nonpolar atomic structure and its related oxygen tilting were ascertained via annular bright field imaging skill. We also found that this cationic disordering gives rise to the local formation of atomic vacancies.

  • In an approach to acclimate ourselves torecent ecological consciousness trend, a lead-free piezoelectric material, bismuth sodium titanate (abbreviated as BNT) based bismuth sodium barium titanate (abbreviated as BNT-BT), was considered as an environment-friendly alternative for a lead based piezoelectric system. Ceramic specimens of0.94[(BixNa0.5)TiO3]-0.06[BaTiO3] (x = 0.500~0.515) compositions were prepared by a modified mixed oxide method. To increase the chemical homogeneity andre action activity, high energy mechanical milling machine and pre-milled nanosized powder has been used. In this method (BixNa0.5)TiO3 (x=0.500~0.515) andBaTiO3 were prepared separately from pre-milled constituent materials at low calcination temperature and then separately prepared BNTX (X=1, 2, 3 and 4) and BT were mixed by high energy mechanical milling machine. Without further calcination step the mixed powders were pressed into disk shape and sintered at $1110^{\circ}C$. Microstructures, phase structures and electrical properties of the ceramic specimens were systematically investigated. Highly dense ceramic specimens with homogenous grains were prepared in spite of relatively low sintering temperature. Phase structures were not significantly influenced by the excess amount Bi. Large variation on the piezoelectric and dielectric properties was detected at relative high excess Bi amounts. When $x{\leq}0.505$, the specimens exhibit insignificant variation in piezoelectric and dielectric constant though depolarization temperature is found to be decreased. Considerable amount of decrease in piezoelectric and dielectric properties are observed with higher excess of Bi amounts ($x{\geq}0.505$). This research indicates the advantages of high energy mechanical milling and importance of proper maintenance of Bi stoichiometry.

  • Due to the environmental issue vast research is going on to replace the widely used lead contented piezoelectric materials. Bismuth sodium titanate (abbreviated as BNT) based bismuth sodium titanate-barium titanate (abbreviated as BNBT) ceramic was prepared by using modified method rather than conventional mixed oxide method. This modification was made to improve the properties of BNT based ceramic. In this procedure $BaTiO_3$ (abbreviated as BT) was prepared using conventional mixed oxide method. Analytical grade raw materials of $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ were weighted and ball milled using ethanol medium. The mixed slurry was dried and sieved under 80 mesh. Then the powder was calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. This calcined BT powder was used in the preparation of BNBT. Stoichiometric amount of $Bi_2O_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, $TiO_2$ and BT were weighted and mixed by using ball mill. The used calcination temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Calcined powder was taken for another milling step. BNBT disks were pressed to 15 mm of diameter and then cold isostatical press (CIP) was used. Pressed samples were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed that the grain shape of the sintered ceramic was polyhedral and grain boundary was well matched where as the sample prepared by conventional method showed irregular arrangement and grain boundary not well matched. And sintered density was better (5.78 g/cc) for the modified method. It was strongly observed that the properties of BNBT ceramic near MPB composition was found to be improved by the modified method compare to the conventional mixed oxide method. The piezoelectric constant dB of 177.33 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$ of 33.4%, dielectric constant $K_{33}^T$ of 688.237 and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ of 109.37 was found.

  • Pb-free ferroelectric $(Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5})TiO_3$ (NBT) thin films were prepared by a modified sol-gel process. Their structural, dielectric and pyroelectric properties were investigated as a function of the excess Na/Bi ratio and the annealing temperature. In the case of thin films containing no excess Na and Bi, only partial amounts of the perovskite NBT were crystallized, where the films consisted mainly of the pyrochlore phase of $Bi_2Ti_2O_7$ for annealing conditions of $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. With increasing excess Na/Bi ratio, the proportion of the perovskite phase effectively increased due to the compensation of the volatile Na and Bi components. For a Na/Bi ratio of 2.0, the thin film with single NBT perovskite phase was obtained within XRD detection limit after annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and it showed the excellent dielectric properties, ${\varepsilon}r$ of ~550 and tan ${\delta}$ of 0.03. While these properties were degraded for Na/Bi ratio of 2.5 despite the existence of pure perovskite phase. The NBT thin film with Na/Bi ratio of 2.0 are also promising candidates for applications requiring pyroelectric devices because it was found to have pyroelectric coefficients of $1.3{\sim}7nC/cm^2K$ in the temperature range of $30{\sim}100^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of Ta substitution on the crystal structure, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of $Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.82}K_{0.18})_{0.5}Ti_{1-x}Ta_xO_3$ ceramics has been investigated. The Ta doping resulted in a transition from coexistence of ferroelectric tetragonal and rhombohedral phases to an electrostrictive pseudocubic phase, leading to degradations of the remnant polarization, coercive field, and piezoelectric coefficient $d_{33}$. However, the electricfield-induced strain was significantly enhanced by the Ta substitution-induced phase transition and reached a highest value of $S_{max}/E_{max}$ = 566 pm/V under an applied electric field 6 kV/mm when 2% Ta was substituted on Ti sites. The abnormal enhancement in strain was attributed to the pseudocubic phase with high electrostrictive constants.

  • A comparative study of microwave and conventional sintering of lead-free $Bi_{1/2}(Na_{0.82}K_{0.18})_{1/2}TiO_3-BaZrO_3-CuO$ ceramics is presented. It was found that microwave sintering (MWS) can be successfully applied to the fabrication of large strain Bi-perovskite with electric field-induced strains comparable to those obtained with conventional sintering (CFS). Although MWS resulted in smaller grained microstructures than CFS, the ferroelectric properties were stronger in MWS-derived specimens than in the CFS-derived ones. The piezoelectric strain constant $d_{33}{^*}$ of the CFS-derived specimens reached a maximum value of 372 pm/V after sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$, whereas that of MWS-derived specimens peaked at $950^{\circ}C$ with a $d_{33}{^*}$ value of 324 pm/V.

  • The effects of $MnO_2$ doping on the crystal structure, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of (K,Na)$NbO_3$ (KNN) ceramics have been investigated. $MnO_2$ was found to be effective in enhancing the densification and grain growth during sintering. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that Mn ions substituted B-site Nb ions up to 2 mol%, however, further doping induced unwanted secondary phases. In comparison with undoped KNN ceramics, the well developed microstructure and the substitution to B-sites in 2 mol% Mn-doped KNN ceramics resulted in significant improvements in both piezoelectric coupling coefficient and electromechanical quality factor.

  • New lead-free piezoelectric ceramics $0.96[\{Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.84}K_{0.16})_{0.5}\}_{1-x}La_x(Ti_{1-y}Nb_y)O_3]-0.04SrTiO_3$ (BNKT-ST-LN, where $x=y=0.00{\leq}(x=y){\leq}0.015)$ were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method. Their crystal structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were investigated as a function of the La and Nb (LN) content. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of a single-phase perovskite structure for all the LN-modified BNKT-ST ceramics in this study. The temperature dependence of the dielectric curves showed that the maximum dielectric constant temperature ($T_m$) shifted towards lower temperatures and the curves became more diffuse with an increasing LN content. At the optimum composition (LN 0.005), a maximum value of remnant polarization ($33C/cm^2$) with a relatively low coercive field (22 kV/cm) and high piezoelectric constant (215 pC/N) was observed. These results indicate that the LN co-modified BNKT-ST ceramic system is a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric materials.
