The condensed results of the analytical study on 361 doctoral dissertations in science education recorded in Dissertation Abstracts International during the years of 1985-1989 are as follows: About eighty to hundred dissertations were produced annually, but a slight decline in number was noted currently. About 94.4% of dissertations were produced by the universities in the USA The research data of 361 dissertations were collected from 25 countries. Over 40% of total dissertations had been focused on high school(senior middle school) and college students as the source of research. Disciplines of science constituting the background of dissertations were biology(l9.l%), physics(l2.7%), chemistry(12.0%) and earth science(2.5%). Concerning the research branches, the number of dissertations belonging to complex research(composed of experimental and theoretical research) was 118(32.7%) and those belonging to experimental and theoretical research were 88(24.4%) and 74(20.5%) respectively. Also that belonging to computer-aided research was 45(12.5%). The general methods of data collection were examination & test(34.9%), questionaire(22.2%) and complexmethod(9.1%). The main areas of dissertations were academic achievement(31.8%), teaching assessment(20.2%) and pedagogy(l8.8%).
Species identification is a fundamental and routine process in plant systematics, and linguistic-based dichotomous keys are widely used in the identification process. Recently, novel tools for species identification have been developed to improve the accuracy, ease to use, and accessibility related to these tasks for a broad range of users given the advances in information and communications technology. A visual identification key is such an approach, in which couplets consist of images of plants or a part of a plant instead of botanical terminology. We developed a visual identification key for 101 taxa of Orchidaceae in Korea and evaluated its performance. It uses short statements for image couplets to avoid misinterpretations by users. The key at the initial steps (couplets) uses relatively easy characters that can be determined with the naked eye. The final steps of the visual key provide images of species and information about distributions and flowering times to determine the species that best fit the available information. The number of steps required to identify a species varies, ranging from three to ten with an average of 4.5. A performance test with senior college students showed that species were accurately identified using the visual key at a rate significantly higher than when using a linguistic-based dichotomous key and a color manual. The findings presented here suggest that the proposed visual identification key is a useful tool for the teaching of biodiversity at schools, for the monitoring of ecosystems by citizens, and in other areas that require rapid, easy, and accurate identifications of species.

Background: Breast cancer continues to be the most common type of cancer afflicting many women worldwide. Presently, educational campaigns and research target only women as if men have no role in the management of this disease. The study examined the willingness of male partners to assist in early female breast cancer detection as well as their awareness and knowledge levels. Materials and Methods: Using a semi-structured questionnaire, data was collected from 500 public servants within the Tamale Metropolis and analyzed in SPSS. Results: The level of awareness of breast cancer was very high (98.8%) but there was a low level of knowledge of breast cancer among the male population. Marital status and religion had no effect on attitude, but increasing educational status significantly increased knowledge and positive attitude towards breast cancer examination (${\chi}^2$=4.255, p=0.0391). The majority (92.0%) agreed that men can assist in early breast cancer detection and 96.2% were willing to be provided with breast examination skills. Conclusions: Although level of awareness on female breast cancers among the men was high, they generally lack knowledge of the disease. Majority of male partners want to assist in early breast cancer detection if provided with the necessary skills.

First: The common points from "syllabus" period to that of "Course of study" are as follows: 1) with no introduction explained. the "Syllabus" or "Course of study" was made to be completed in accordance with the allotment of time (unit). 2) To teach how to rear animals and grow plants, and to make specimens with collected samples formed a great significant field of learning, which meant giving more emphasis on learning classification, life-centered education and basic field of learning than discipline-centered education. 3) The reason why the field of applied biology was emphasized on was that both periods had ideals in Common to educate persons more necessary and useful to the society than to major the pure academic field. 4) Both periods mainly dealt with problems of diseases, and physical health discussed all over the world in 1950's which accounts for necessity of the society to free from ignorance. Second; "The first curriculum period" and "the second one" are observed as follows: 1) The former took the unit (credit) system for the first time. It tried to lay down the conceptual hierarchy with "Biology I" and "II" divided, while "Biolgy I" is better systematized than "Biology II". 2) Discipline-centered education and structure fo knowledge are put more emphasis on especially in "the 2nd curriculum period". 3) And also in this period are included serious problems such as urgency of pollution, importance of nature conservation, population due to the development of industry. 'Third; With the recent curriculum laid down, experiments and teaching contents of subjects are put in harmony with each other and accordingly the process of Inquiry is laid emphasis on. Fourth; It is necessary to set up conceptual sequence and scope effectively in the curriculum.
Background: miRNAs are relatively recently discovered cancer biomarkers which have important implications for cancer early diagnosis, treatment and estimation of prognosis. Here we focussed on expression of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer tissues and cell lines so as to analyse its significance for clinicopathologic characteristics and generate enriched KEGG pathways clustered by target genes for exploring its potential roles as a biomarker in gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The expression of mir-196a-5p in poorly, moderate and well differentiated gastric cancer cell lines compared with GES-1 was detected by RT-qPCR, and the expression of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer tissues comparing with adjacent non cancer tissues of 58 cases were also assessed by RT-qPCR. Subsequently, an analysis of clinical significance of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer and enriched KEGG pathways was executed based on the miRWalk prediction database combined with bioinformatics tools DAVID 6.7 and Mirfocus 3.0. Results: RT-qPCR showed that mir-196a-5p was up-regulated in 6 poorly and moderate differentiated gastric cancer cell lines SGC-7901, MKN-45, MKN-28, MGC-803, BGC-823, HGC-27 compared with GES-1, but down-regulated in the highly differentiated gastric cancer cell line AGS. Clinical data indicated mir-196a-5p to beup-regulated in gastric cancer tissues (47/58). Overexpression of mir-196a-5p was associated with more extensive degree of lymph node metastasis and clinical stage (P < 0.05; x2 test). Enriched KEGG pathway analyses of predicted and validated targets in miRWalk combined with DAVID 6.7 and Mirfocus 3.0 showed that the targeted genes regulated by mir-196a-5p were involved in malignancy associated biology. Conclusions: Overexpression of mir-196a-5p is associated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage, and enriched KEGG pathway analyses showed that targeted genes regulated by mir-196a-5p may contribute to tumorgenesis, suggesting roles as an oncogenic miRNA biomarker in gastric cancer.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the status and gifted students' perception on curriculum implementation for gifted education at Busan Science Academy. For the purpose, we investigated the curriculum documents, the process of implementing curriculum and the result of the questionnaire. The questionnaire about the curriculum courses, teaching strategies and evaluation method was answered by 143 students at Busan Science Academy. The curriculum courses are composed of general courses and specialized courses: general courses comprise of Korean language, social studies, foreign languages, arts, and physical education. Specialized courses consist of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, information science. Elective courses are divided into basic elective courses and in-depth courses. Each in-depth course deals with more specialized content. The significant results of the questionnaire are as follows: First, according to gifted students' perception, the credits of specialized courses and in-depth elective courses need to be increased and the credits of general courses need to be reduced. Second, teachers at this school mainly use teaching strategies such as lecture, group activities and discussion, but the students prefer diverse teaching strategies such as lecture, discussion, experiment, individual research, problem solving and field studies. Third, students prefer a paper-and-pencil testing assesment rather than a written report assesment and lab experiment assesment. According to this study, the characteristics of the acceleration curriculum at Busan Science Academy were too intensive. Thus it is difficult to implement the enrichment education according to the demand of gifted students in this school. Therefore, this study suggests that we need to revise the curriculum courses of Busan Science Academy and develop contents and strategies for gifted education in science and mathematics.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of a VR(virtual reality)-based biology class on both the cognitive and affective domains by developing and applying a VR-based biology program for 6th-grade elementary school students. For this research, we developed a VR teaching material about 'digestion' reflecting virtual reality characteristics and one hundred five students in an elementary school in an urban area participated in this study and took three VR-based lessons. To examine the cognitive effects of a VR-based biology class, the study subjects were divided into two groups. The experimental group was composed of 50 individuals who participated in VR-based biology lessons, while 55 students of a control group learned through general lessons. We collected data using drawing tasks for measuring students' modeling performance level from these groups and analyzed the cognitive effect of VR-based instruction. We also recorded 21 interviews of students after the intervention, which were transcribed to verify the students' perception of cognitive and affective effects. The key results are as follows: First, we demonstrated the possibility of applying a VR program reflecting VR characteristics (manipulation, multi-sensory, and interaction). Second, we found out that a VR-based biology class significantly enhances higher levels of thinking (spatial, abstract, and reflective thinking). Third, we examined students' perceptions on this program and came to the conclusion that VR characteristics positively affected cognitive and affective domains. This study may be able to contribute to offering guidelines on how to apply VR-programs to future science education effectively.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of Semantic Network Program (SNP) instruction on learning achievement and motivation in high school biology classes. For this study, a SNP was designed by applying the recommendations in regard to student attention and satisfaction factors in Keller's ARCS theory. SNP instruction was conducted with an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 62 high school biology class student. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The pre-test was used to analyze the learning achievement test, learning motivation test, and semantic forming test. For 4 weeks the experiment group was instructed using the developed SNP which centered on Keller's attention and satisfaction factors, and the control group was instructed via teacher-centered lectures based on the textbook. It was found that SNP instruction efficiently increased students' biology learning achievement (p<.001). It was also discovered that SNP instruction was effective in increasing Keller's motivation strategies on attention and satisfaction factors (p<.001). In addition, SNP instruction positively affected students' semantic formation (p<.001) and learning content retention (p>.05) in the heredity unit by aiding students in the area of active multimedia learning. An in depth interview with students in the class using SNP instruction showed that material learned via this method in biology had longer retention of problem-solving methods. Consequently, SNP instruction according to motivation strategies may high school biology teachers with meaningful teaching-learning methods strategies for the unit on heredity.
The studying and teaching of behavioral neurology remain in their infancy. As the arena for studying how the brain subserves cognition, emotion and consciousness, behavioral neurology straddles the boundaries of numerous, more established disciplines-extending from the most fundamental explorations of molecular biology to the broadest questions of philosophy. In behavioral neurology, the area of neural dysfunction as well as the pathogenesis must be determined. There are cases in which a more thorough mental status examination must be performed. These are practically the cases with known or suspected brain lesions and acute psychiatric disorders.
The Korean government has recently announced its plan to establish the first National Museum of Natural History. However, the Korean word for natural history, jayonsa, is not a very familiar term to some academics as well as the general public. This article discusses the definition and history of natural history, describes the functions of natural history meseums, and makes suggestions to the establishment of our National Museum. Modern natural history is no longer an art of ‘stamp collecting’. It is a comprehensive scientific endeavor pursuing to enlighten the history of the planet Earth and the diversity of natural objects it contains. Natural history museum must have two museums within the museum: the outer museum for exhibition and general public education and the inner museum for research and specialist education. I hope that our National Museum of Natural History will be a place where we all get to know about Nature and thus to love her.
