Chitosan and Algin are known as a natural polymers. Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of natural polymer(low, medium, high-Chitosan, Algin) for the purpose of useful bioimplants. The possibility of bioimplants, which were prepared from natural polymers as a skin substitute and food wrapping materials were evaluated by measuring biodegradability. This biodegradable films were inserted in the back of rats and their biodegradability was investigated by hematological change evaluation as a function of time to biotransformation. It was found that these values of biodegradable films give some good results with short period test.
It is becoming increasingly important to utilize alternative raw materials for plastic industries other than petrochemical-based plastics. Cellulose derivatives were the bases of the original synthetic plastics. Cellulose and its derivatives, especially the widely used cellulose acetate (CA), constitute one of the main classes of raw materials for production on artificial fibers, films, plastics etc. CA is one of the well known polymers produced from naturally available plant substance. Many researches have focused on the isolation of cellulose from the plant cells to use them as cellulose derivatives and composite materials. Chemical and mechanical treatments provide changes on the molecular structures influencing the fundamental properties of these naturally abundant polymer. The aim of this review article is to review biodegradation, synthesis, formation, and utilization of cellulose esters, especially di-acetate, used in packaging related researches.
This study is performed to assess the preparation and characterization of lactic acid bacteria (Sterpoccoccus thermophilus) loaded with alginate microsphere using alginate and chitosan for the efficient delivery of lactic acid bacteria to large intestine. Size and morphology of alginate microsphere were confirmed $6{\sim}10{\mu}m$ with spherical shape by scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Biodegradation study of alginate was investigated at different buffer solutions (pH 1.2 and 7.4). This result showed that alginate microsphere did not degrade at pH 1.2 buffer solution but it's degradation occurred from first day at pH 7.4 buffer solution. Survivability test of lactic acid bacteria in alginate microsphere showed that it was keeping activity of lactic acid bacteria by chroma meter. Therefore, the introduction of alginate microsphere might be a potential system to efficiently delivery lactic acid to large intestine.
In this study, biodegradable superporous hydrogels(SPHs) with fast swelling and superabsorbent properties were prepared using biodegradable crosslinkers and their physicochemical properties were characterized. A biodegradable crosslinker (PLA-PEG-PLA DA) was synthesized by a ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide (LA) using hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator, followed by diacrylation of the end groups for the introduction of polymerizable vinyl groups. Various kinds of hydrogels with different chemical compositions were prepared and characterized in terms of swelling ratio, swelling kinetics, and biodegradation properties. The synthetic results were confirmed by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR and GPC measurements, and the porous structures of the prepared SPHs and their porosities were identified by a scanning electron microscope and mercury porosimetry, respectively. The physicochemical properties of SPHs could be controlled by varying their chemical compositions and their cytotoxicity were found to be very low by MTT assay.
In this study, expanded poly(tetrafluoro ethylene) (ePTFE) graft was modified to be used as a hemodialysis vascular access. Biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide-$co$-glycolide) (PLGA) was coated onto the inner surface of ePTFE graft with paclitaxel, which is often used as an anti-cancer agent and for reducing neointimal hyperplasia. Surface characterization before and after PLGA coating was carried out by SEM and ATR-FTIR. Porous sturcture of ePTFE was maintained after coating of PLGA solution. The amounts of coated PLGA and paclitaxel determined by ATR-FTIR and HPLC were 1.96 and 0.263 mg/$cm^2$, respectively. Young's modulus was decreased and tensile strength was increased by PLGA coating. Released paclitaxel as a function of incubation time was monitored by HPLC. Approximately 35% of coated paclitaxel was released steadily for 4 weeks with the biodegradation of PLGA. From these results, it is expected that the effect of paclitaxel on reducing neointimal hyperplasia and stenosis is maintained for a long time.

Biodegradable molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can be applied in the biomedical area of biosensors, drug delivery, etc. Therefore, in this study, biodegradable theophylline MIPs were synthesized via photopolymerization using a poly $(\varepsilon-caprolactone)$ (PCL) macromer as a cross-linker and their physical properties were investigated. The yield for the synthesis of the PCL macromer with terminal acrylate groups was ca. 78 mol%. The products were characterized by the combination of FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopic analyses. UV/Visible spectroscopic analysis for removing and rebinding theophylline was performed by monitoring the theophylline concentration in the solution. In vitro biodegradation tests of the theophylline MIPs performed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution at $37^{\circ}C$ showed good biodegradability of the MIPs.
Oligo(ethylene terephthalate)(OET), oligo(ethylene succinate-co-terephthalate)(OEST) and oligo(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate)(OBST), which are part of the poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) oligomer, were synthesized. Degradation test of oligomers carried out by the presence of lipase PS. There were two objectives in the experiment: first, to measure the weight remaining of the PET oligomer as increasing degradation time, and second to examine the degradation mechanism by analyzing the resulting degraded product. In the synthesis of OEST and OBST, by controlling the feed ratio of both OEST and OBST, we were able to obtain oligomer of different composition ratios. The various composition ratios resulted in oligomer of vastly different thermal properties. We observed that both OEST and OBST were degraded using lipase PS, but as the composition of terephthalic acid was increased, the lipase PS became less effective. We confirmed that the lipase PS easily decomposed polyester of the aliphatic compound.
Carmustine (l,3-bis(2-chloroethyI)-1-nitrosourea, BICNU) used as antineoplastic drug for the treatment of brain tumor is not appropriate for the long term delivery, because it has short biological half life. Therefore, poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) is useful as drug carrier for the long term delivery due to bulk erosion property. Glycolide monomer is applied to release of BICNU owing to non-toxic and monomeric components after biodegradation of PLGA. In this study, BICNU-loaded PLGA wafers with or without glycolide monomer were fabricated by conventional direct compression method for the sustained release of BICNU. These wafers were observed for their release profiles of BICNU and degradation rates by SEM, NMR, and GPC. Furthermore, we make multi-layer wafers and compare them with release profiles of conventional wafer. From these results, drug release of BICNU-loaded PLGA wafers was increased with increasing the glycolid monomer contents. We confirmed that glycolide monomer and BICNU contents in barrier-layer influenced the drug release profiles and degradation rate.
Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of chitosan for the purpose of useful biomaterials. The possibility of biomaterials prepared from natural polymer as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biocompatibility. These films were inserts in the back of rat and their biodegradability was investigated by the film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rat test showed that medium, high viscosity chitosan induced some suspects of inbiocompatibility in the tissue by goreign body reaction 48 and 72 hours after implantation. Also, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by low viscosity chitosan. This burn ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burn and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of the naked eye and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from chitosan was effective reductio of inflammation than negative group.

Gum is known as natural polymer. Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of natural gums(Xanthan, Locust bean, Guar) for the purpose of useful bioimplants. The possibility of bioimplants, which prepared from natural gums as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biodegradability. This biodegradable films were inserted in the back of rats and their of biodegradability were investigated by hematological change evaluation as a function of time to the biotransformation. Rats implantation test results showed that Guar induced increments of monocyte and basophil after 48 hours of implantation. And Locust bean showed increase of monocyte and neutrophile counts after 48 hours of implantation. And Xanthan induced decrease of monocyte and neutrophile at 24 hours after implantation. Guar and Locust showed high hemoglobin contents and hematocrit after 48 hours of implantation. Guar and Locust induced some suspects of incompatibility in the tissue after 48 hours, but three were little effects to the skin inflammation at 24 hours. These values of biodegradable films, which prepared from prepared from natural gums measured in this were some satisfiable results at short period with those of ideal skin bioimplants.
