Air-side Heat Transfer and Friction Characteristics of Fined-tube Heat Exchangers under Heating Condition (핀-관 열교환기의 난방운전 시 공기측 열전달 및 마찰특성)

  • An experimental study has been performed to investigate the characteristics of air-side heat transfer and friction of a fined tube heat exchanger under heating conditions. Air enthalpy calorimeter was used to obtain the performance evaluation and analysis of the fined tube heat exchanger. Eight finned tube heat exchangers with slit fin, louver fin, and plain fin were used. The air-side heat transfer coefficient was calculated by the log-mean-temperature-difference. Air-side heat transfer and friction were presented in terms of j factor and friction factor on Reynolds number. From the experimental result, it was found that the variations of air-side heat transfer and friction of fined tube heat exchanger with the change of the fin configuration, row number, fin pitch, and tube circuit were obtained. j factor and friction factor decreased with Reynolds number increased. The tube circuit affected the air-side heat transfer and friction. In the case of slit and louver fin, j factor of 1st row was higher than that of 2nd row. But, with increasing Re, j factor was reversed. The characteristics of j factor and friction factor of 2nd row heat exchanger were different according to the kind of fins.

Parthenolide Inhibits Ovalbumin-Induced cyclooxygenase-2 and Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression

  • In recent years, egg allergy has been raised as the most prevalent food hypersensitivity in the pediatric population. One of the major egg allergens is ovalbumin (OVA) which is the major protein in egg white, comprising 54% of its total protein content. Parthenolide isolated from Tanacetum partheniumb has been used to treat many chronic diseases for many years. In the present report, we present biochemical evidence that parthenolide inhibits the nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) activation induced by OVA. Parthenolide also inhibits OVA-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. These data suggest new approaches for the efficient alleviation of the allergic symptoms.

  • Nitric oxide is an important factor to regulate the biochemical reactions in the body such as expansion of blood vessel, neural conduction and antimicrobial activity. There are two forms of nitric oxide synthase and iNOS has attracted most attention because it is involved in the development of diabetes and cardiac disease condition. There are several regulatory sequences in the promoter region of iNOS gene. One of them is (CCTTT)n. It has been reported that the number of tandem repeat of (CCTTT)n varies from population to population. So, we analyzed (CCTTT)n polymorphism in Korean genome for the purpose of comparison. According to our present study Koreans are different from other Asians reported previously because $(CCTTT)_{10}$ is the highest incidence as opposed to $(CCTTT)_{12}$ for other countries. This study should facilitate the understanding of the expression of iNOS gene in different population.

Development of Dietary Supplement for the Growth and Exercise Performance Improvement (성장과 운동수행능력 향상에 도움을 주는 식이조성물의 개발)

  • We developed a dietary supplement using natural herbs and nutrients for the growth and exercise performance improvement. It called 50-22 supplement containing distilled extracts of natural herbs to remove bitterness and the addition of Vitamin B1, B6, Ca and xylitol. We investigated on the effect of 10-22 supplementation on the maximal exercise performance, IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor-1) concentration and antioxidant activity in SD rat model. In result, JR-22 supplement group was better than control group about 10% in exercise performance test and increased about 63% of IGF-1 concentration in blood. In addition, the oxidative damage induced by exercise was reduced by JR-22 supplementation. Therefore, we suggested that 50-22 supplementation enhanced effectively exercise performance and IGF-1 concentration and reduced to oxidative stress in muscles. Also, we analysed biochemical factors in blood for the safety of JR-22 supplement. We known that there is no change of blood lactic acid, ammonia, inorganic phosphorous ion and creatine kinase activity. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(3) : 349∼355, 2003)

Protein Kinase A Increases DNA-Binding Activity of Testis-Brain RNA-Binding Protein

  • Testis brain RNA-binding protein (TB-RBP) is a DNA/RNA binding protein. TB-RBP is mainly expressed in testis and brain and highly conserved protein with several functions, including chromosomal translocations, DNA repair, mitotic cell division, and mRNA transport, stabilization, and storage. In our previous study, we identified TB-RBP as an interacting partner for the catalytic subunit $(C{\alpha})$ of protein kinase A(PKA) and verified their interaction with several biochemical analyses. Here, we confirmed interaction between $C{\alpha}$. and TB-RBP in mammalian cells and determined the effect of $C{\alpha}$. on the function of TB-RBP. The activation of $C{\alpha}$. increased the TB-RBP function as a DNA-binding protein. These results suggest that the function of TB-RBP can be modulated by PKA and provide insights into the diverse role of PKA.

Isoliquiritigenin (ILG) is an active component present in licorice and has been used to treat many chronic diseases for many years. In this study, we present biochemical evidence that ILG inhibits OVA-induced nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) activation. ILG also inhibits OVA-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. These data suggest that ILG has anti-allergy effects.

  • Organisms living in the Arctic and Antarctic regions are exposed to strong constraints, of which temperature is a driving factor. Evolution has led to special adaptations, some with important implications at the biochemical, physiological, and molecular levels. The northern and southern polar oceans have very different characteristics. Tectonic and oceanographic events have played a key role in delimiting the two polar ecosystems and influencing evolution. Antarctica has been isolated and cold longer than the Arctic; its ice sheet developed at least 10 million years earlier. As an intermediate system, the Arctic is a connection between the more extreme, simpler Antarctic system and the very complex temperate and tropical systems. By studying the molecular bases of cold adaptation in polar fish, and taking advantage of the information available on hemoglobin structure and function, we analysed the evolutionary history of the ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}globins$ of Antarctic and Arctic hemoglobin using the molecular clock hypothesis as a basis for reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships among species.

Preventive Effects of Co-treatment with Fucoidan and Lutein on the Development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in DSS Mouse Model

  • We investigated the effects of fucoidan and lutein against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice colitis. Evaluations were made of the body weight, histological index such as crypt injury and inflammation score, biochemical factor such as serum amyloid (SAA) and MPO level data. The combination of fucoidan and lutein reduced the score of crypt injury and inflammation and markedly showed more decrease of the SAA and MPO levels than 5-ASA group. In addition, each sample of fucoidan and lutein was reduced the level of IL-6 which is stimulated by a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in HT-29 cell line in vitro. Therefore, fucoidan and lutein may be useful as a dietary substance for preventing inflammatory bowel disease in humans.

  • The molecular mechanisms by which a variety of naturally-occurring dietary compounds exert chemopreventive effects have been a subject of intense scientific investigations. Induction of phase II detoxification and anti-oxidant enzymes through activation of Nrf2/ARE-dependent gene is recognized as one of the major cellular defense mechanisms against oxidative or xenobiotic stresses and currently represents a critical chemopreventive mechanism of action. In the present review, the functional significance of Keap1/Nrf2 protein module in regulating ARE-dependent phase II detoxification and anti-oxidant gene expression is discussed. The biochemical mechanisms underlying the phosphorylation and expression of Keap1/Nrf2 proteins that are controlled by the intracellular signaling kinases and ubiquitin-mediated E3 ligase system as well as control of nucleocytoplasmic translocation of Nrf2 by its innate nuclear export signal (NES) are described.

  • In this study, we attempted to characterize the biomolecular effects of an atmospheric-pressure cold plasma (APCP) system which utilizes helium/oxygen $(He/O_2)$. APCP using $He/O_2$ generates a low level of UV while generating reactive oxygen radicals which probably serve as the primary factor in sterilization; these reactive oxygen radicals have the advantage of being capable to access the interiors of the structures of microbial cells. The damaging effects of plasma exposure on polypeptides, DNA, and enzyme proteins in the cell were assessed using biochemical methods.
