  • This examined some conditions for the induction of ${\beta}$-D-galactosidase synthesis in Candida kefyr CBS 834. The optimal pH, temperature, and inoculum size either for growth or${\beta}$-D-galactosidase synthesis were 5.5, $30^{\circ}C$ and above 0.2 at A610nm, respectively. Enzyme activity began to increase at 2h after the addition of inducer, and continued to increase linearly up to $2{\sim}3h$ before reaching stationary phase, and thereafter its activity was decreased. ${\beta}$-D-galactosidase was induced either by lactose or galactose but not either by glucose or ethanol. The greater activity of ${\beta}$-D-galactosidase on galactose than on lactose indicated that the former might be natural inducer for ${\beta}$-D-galactosidase synthesis. The rate of its induction as a function of lactose concentration showed that enzyme activity increased linearly above 4mM, while it was very low below that. Glucose represed the induction of ${\beta}$-D-galactosidase, and the period of adaptation to inducer from other carbon sources was relatively short.

  • A general theory of polymer adsorption at a semi-permeable oil-water interface of the biphasic solution is presented. The configurational factor of the solution in the presence of the semi-open boundary at the interface is evaluated by the quasicrystalline lattice model. The present theory gives the feature of the bulk concentration equilibria between oil-water subsystems and the surface excesses of ${\Gamma}^{\alpha}$ and ${\Gamma}^\{beta}$ of the polymer segments as a function of the degree of polymerization $\gamma$, the Flory-Huggins parameter in $\beta$-phase $x_{\rho}^{{\beta}_{\rho}}$, the differential adsorption energy parameter in $\beta$-phase $x_{\sigma}^{{\beta}_{\rho}}$, the differential interaction energy parameter ${\Delta}x_{\rho}$ and the bulk concentration of the polymer in ${\beta}-phase ${\varphi}_2^{{\beta(*)}_2}$. From our numerical results, the characteristics of ${\Gamma}^{\alpha}$ are shown to be significantly different from those of ${\Gamma}^{\beta}$ in the case of high polymers, and this would be the most apparent feature of the adsorption behavior of the polymer at a semi-permeable oil-water interface, which is sensitively dependent on ${\Delta}x_{\rho}$ and r.

  • This paper proposes a discrete logarithm algorithm that remarkably reduces the execution time of Pollard's Rho algorithm. Pollard's Rho algorithm computes congruence or collision of ${\alpha}^a{\beta}^b{\equiv}{\alpha}^A{\beta}^B$ (modp) from the initial value a = b = 0, only to derive ${\gamma}$ from $(a+b{\gamma})=(A+B{\gamma})$, ${\gamma}(B-b)=(a-A)$. The basic Pollard's Rho algorithm computes $x_i=(x_{i-1})^2,{\alpha}x_{i-1},{\beta}x_{i-1}$ given ${\alpha}^a{\beta}^b{\equiv}x$(modp), and the general algorithm computes $x_i=(x_{i-1})^2$, $Mx_{i-1}$, $Nx_{i-1}$ for randomly selected $M={\alpha}^m$, $N={\beta}^n$. This paper proposes 4-model Pollard Rho algorithm that seeks ${\beta}_{\gamma}={\alpha}^{\gamma},{\beta}_{\gamma}={\alpha}^{(p-1)/2+{\gamma}}$, and ${\beta}_{{\gamma}^{-1}}={\alpha}^{(p-1)-{\gamma}}$) from $m=n={\lceil}{\sqrt{n}{\rceil}$, (a,b) = (0,0), (1,1). The proposed algorithm has proven to improve the performance of the (0,0)-basic Pollard's Rho algorithm by 71.70%.

  • $TGF-{\beta}$ signaling plays a tumor suppressive role in normal and premalignant cells but promotes tumor progression during the late stages of tumor development. The $TGF-{\beta}$ signaling pathway is tightly regulated at various levels, including transcriptional and post-translational mechanisms. Ubiquitination of signaling components, such as receptors and Smad proteins is one of the key regulatory mechanisms of $TGF-{\beta}$ signaling. Tripartite motif (TRIM) family of proteins is a highly conserved group of E3 ubiquitin ligase proteins that have been implicated in a variety of cellular functions, including cell growth, differentiation, immune response, and carcinogenesis. Recent emerging studies have shown that some TRIM family proteins function as important regulators in tumor initiation and progression. This review summarizes current knowledge of TRIM family proteins regulating the $TGF-{\beta}$ signaling pathway with relevance to cancer.

  • In recent years, one-dimensional (1D) magnetic nanostructures, such as magnetic nanorods and chains of magnetic nanoparticles have received great attentions due to the breadth of applications. Especially, magnetic nanorods has been opened an area of active research and applications in medicine, sensors, optofluidics, magnetic swimming, and microrheology since they possess the unique magnetic and geometric features. This study focuses on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of an infinitely long crystal ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorod. To elucidate the structural properties and dynamics behavior of ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorods, MD simulation is a powerful technique. The structural properties such as equation of state and radial distribution function of bulk ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ are performed by lattice dynamics (LD) simulations. In this work, we consider three main mechanisms affecting on deformation characteristics of a ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorod: 1) temperature, 2) the rate of mechanical compression, and 3) the rate of mechanical torsion.

  • To evaluate the effects of sleep habits on the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm of the electroencephalogram (EEG), female college student subjects were divided into four groups, according to their sleep habits, as follows: GSHG (Good Sleep Habit Group), CSHG (Common Sleep Habit Group: late bedtime), CSDG (Cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group), and NSDG (Non-cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group). Brain function was stimulated by reading a book for 3 min in the morning (9~12 am) and the EEG was measured. According to the results, the powers of the beta waves and sensory motor rhythm were not different during the resting period among the four groups. However, during the reading stimulation period, the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm in the GSHG were significantly greater than in the other groups ($p$ <0.05). Beta powers during stimulation also increased in all brain areas in the GSHG ($p$ <0.05). Interestingly, these were decreased in the frontal and temporal lobes in the CSHG by the reading stimulation ($p$ <0.05). On the other hand, sensory motor rhythm, which represents focusing efficacy, only improved in the GSHG. These results indicate that the brain's focusing function during the reading stimulation was not properly operating in the morning in the female college students who had a delayed bedtime and bad sleep habits.

  • Purpose : This study was designed to examine the blood glucose control and increase immunity effects of ${\beta}-glucan$ added cooked barley noodle in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mice with a high-fat diet. Method : Forty-eight male ICR mice (6-week-old) were fed AIN-93 diet for 4 weeks. Mice were divided into six groups: normal, diabetic, cooked barley noodle, ${\beta}-glucan$ (5 %) control and two experimental groups (${\beta}-glucan$ 2.5 % and 5 %, cooked barley noodle contained diet with ${\beta}-glucan$ 2.5 % and 5 % w/w). Diabetes mellitus was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (150 mg/kg). Result : Blood glucose level was significantly decreased in groups consuming cooked barley noodles, but no significant difference was exhibited in diabetic and ${\beta}-glucan$ control group. These results were in accordance with the result of oral glucose tolerance test. Blood interfereon $(IFN)-{\gamma}$ was measured in order to identify increase immunity effect of ${\beta}-glucan$ in diabetic mice. Inhibited $IFN-{\gamma}$ concentration was recovered in cooked barley noodle and ${\beta}-glucan$ control group. Moreover, $IFN-{\gamma}$ concentration was dramatically elevated in ${\beta}-glucan$ contained cooked barley noodle groups in a dose dependent manner. Streptozotocin induced AST and ALT activities were decreased in ${\beta}-glucan$ contained cooked barley noodle groups with a strong lipid lowering effect. Conclusion : Although addition of ${\beta}-glucan$n did not give any significant synergistic effect on cooked barley noodle in blood glucose regulation, suppressed $IFN-{\gamma}$ production by STZ was dramatically enhanced by ${\beta}-glucan$ supplementation in a dose dependent manner. Liver function and blood lipid profile were also in accordance with the increase immunity effect of ${\beta}-glucan$. Consequently, ${\beta}-glucan$ added cooked barley noodle can be consumed as good diets for patients with chronic diseases with reduced immunity.
