  • This study examined the mediating effects of irrational beliefs on the relationships of middle school students' autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses(impulsive reaction, verbal aggression, physical confrontation and indirect expression). A sample of 346 first and second year students of middle school participated in the autonomy of psychological growth environment scale, the irrational beliefs scale and behavioral anger responses scale. Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed. The results showed that: ⑴ The relations among autonomy of psychological growth environment, irrational beliefs and behavioral anger responses were significant. The autonomy of psychological growth environment had negative correlations with irrational beliefs and behavioral anger responses. Irrational beliefs produced positive correlations with behavioral anger responses. There were positive correlations among the subtypes of behavioral anger responses. ⑵ There were mediating effects of irrational beliefs between autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses. The effects of autonomy of psychological growth environment on impulsive reaction, physical confrontation and indirect expression were fully mediated by irrational beliefs. However, the effect of autonomy of psychological growth environment on verbal aggression was partially mediated by irrational beliefs. This study demonstrated that irrational beliefs mediate the relationship between autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses.

  • This study examined the effects of parental control and children's autonomy on self-esteem, using a sample of 415 school-age children (208 boys and 207 girls) recruited in Seoul. Ordinary Least Square regressions revealed a variety of gender-based differences in the associations among these three variables. Boys with high maternal behavioral control had high levels of self-esteem, whereas girls under low paternal psychological and high behavioral control reported high levels of self-esteem. Boys with high maternal behavioral control and girls with high paternal behavioral control also reported high levels of autonomy. Autonomy was found to exert a positive impact on self-esteem for both boy and girls. Autonomy played a mediating role in the relationships between maternal behavioral control and self-esteem for boys, and between paternal behavioral control and self-esteem for girls. These findings highlight the differential influences of psychological control and behavioral control on autonomy and self-esteem, as well as the relative impact of the opposite sex parent on the development of autonomy and self-esteem in late childhood.

  • Objective: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the direct effect of preschoolers' behavioral inhibition and indirect effects through maternal overprotective parenting and autonomy support on preschoolers' anxiety. Methods: A total of 295 preschoolers and their mothers were the subjects of this study. Mothers completed a questionnaire that included measures of their parenting behavior, preschoolers' behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: First, preschoolers' behavioral inhibition had a direct effect on their anxiety. Preschoolers with higher behavioral inhibition displayed higher levels of anxiety. Second, maternal overprotective parenting mediated the relationship between preschoolers' behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Third, maternal autonomy support mediated the relationship between preschoolers' behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Conclusion/Implications: The findings of this study emphasize the importance of reducing maternal overprotective parenting and promoting autonomy support to prevent preschoolers' anxiety. These findings could be used as a foundation for developing parent education programs for mothers with behaviorally inhibited preschoolers.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of young children's behavioral inhibition on self-determination, examining the sequential mediating effects of mothers' parenting anxiety and autonomy support. Methods: Participants in this study were 225 mothers with children aged 6 years. An online survey was conducted, and SPSS Statistics 23.0 was used for basic analysis. The research model used the Process Macro 4.0 program. Results: The higher the level of behavioral inhibition, the lower the child's self-determination. Furthermore, a mediating effect was confirmed when parenting anxiety was added. However, in the single mediation model and the sequential mediation model in which autonomy support was added, the direct effects of behavioral inhibition temperament and parenting anxiety on self-determination disappeared. As a result, behavioral inhibition characteristics were found to have an indirect effect on self-determination through the sequential mediating effects of mother's parenting anxiety and autonomy support. Conclusion/Implications: If a mother with a child with a behaviorally inhibited temperament properly handles the negative emotions experienced during parenting based on her understanding of the child and supports the child to have a high degree of autonomy, she can enhance the child's right to self-determination.

  • The influence of depression, self-esteem, and well-being components of maternal psychological environment on child behavior problems was examined in Korean and American populations. Findings were that the level of mother's self-esteem was lower in Korean than in American mothers; the level of mother's "autonomy" and "environmental mastery" was lower in Korean than in American mothers; and "somatic complaints" were more frequent in the Korean group. The relationship between maternal psychological environment and child behavior problems was greater in the American group. In the Korean group, autonomy and enviornmental mastery were negative components causing both internalized and externalized behavor problems in children. Mothers' depression was the most powerful variable, affecting internalized and externalized behavior problems in both Korean and American groups.

  • This study investigated the association between children's perceptions of autonomy support from mothers and teachers in relation to academic procrastination. It also examined the role of self-efficacy for self-regulated learning in mediating these effects. The sample comprised 372 fifth and sixth grade elementary school students from Seoul, Korea. Each completed a questionnaire regarding mothers' and teachers' autonomy support, children's self-regulated learning efficacy, and academic procrastination. The results indicated that whereas mothers' autonomy support had a direct effect on children's academic procrastination, teachers' support did not. In other words, children who perceived higher levels of autonomy support from mothers tended to exhibit less academic procrastination. Regarding indirect paths, children who perceived higher levels of mothers' and teachers' autonomy support displayed greater efficacy for self-regulated learning, which corresponded to lower levels of academic procrastination. The discussion highlights the vital roles of autonomy support from mothers and teachers in enhancing children's feelings of effective self-regulated learning and encouraging them to complete academic tasks. Furthermore, the present study considered not only outward behavioral factors but also the underlying cognitive and affective aspects of delaying behavior that underpin the effects of self-regulated learning efficacy and autonomy support of mothers and teachers on academic procrastination.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to identify factors influencing a relapse among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: Of 250 participants enrolled in the original study 75 were selected as there was no relapse for more than one year following the initial treatment and 54 were selected because there was a relapse. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test or F test to determine if there were any significant differences in the study variables relative to the status of relapse. Predictors were calculated by logistic regression. Results: Autonomy supported by healthcare providers was the significant predictor for relapse in patients with CAD. Patients with low autonomy supported by healthcare providers was 3.91 times more likely to relapse than patients with high autonomy supported. Patients with diabetes were at greater risk of recurrence. Conclusion: Secondary prevention of CAD is a major task for patients with CAD. Behavioral strategies for cardiovascular risk reduction are essential and autonomy supported by healthcare providers should be included in their strategies.
