A total of 238 accessions of peppers (Capsicum spp.) were evaluated for resistance to powdery mildew (Leveillula taurica (Lev.) Arn) in 1998-1999. KC604, 605, 606 and 608 of C. baccatum, KC616 of C. chinense, and KC638, 640, 641, 642, 643 and 644 of C. pubescens were highly resistant and remained disease-free. KC47-1 (PI244670), KC319-1, KC545, KC320 showed only mild infection compared with susceptible control group, 'Chungok' and others. Therefore, they were considered moderately resistant. Among them, KC47-1, KC319-1 and KC320 are sources of resistance to gray leaf spot caused by Stemphylium spp. while KC47-1 is also resistant to bacterial leaf spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Doidge) Dye). Therefore, they may be used in breeding for multiple resistance to those diseases.
Functional microorganisms decompose various organic matter by enzyme activity and suppress plant disease caused by pathogen. This study was conducted to isolate and select functional microorganisms with protein or carbohydrate degradation activities and antagonistic activity against turfgrass fungal pathogens for eco-friendly turfgrass management in golf course from compost containing livestock manure of poultry or swine. Totally 68 isolates collected from livestock manure compost strains were isolated and tested for their activities of amylase, protease and lipase and antagonistic activities against Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2, R. solani AG1-1, and Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. Among the isolates, 34 strains were selected as functional microbes showing higher activities of amylase and protease. Three isolates of ASC-14, ASC-18, and ASC-35 among the 34 strains were selected as antifungal bacterial strains repressing the above 3 turfgrass fungal pathogens. Analysis results of 16s rRNA gene sequence and phylogenic cluster indicated that ASC-14 and ASC-18 belonged to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, while ASC-35 was B. subtilis, respectively.
Twenty-nine P. polymyxa strains isolated from rhizospheres of various crops were clustered into five genotypic groups on the basis of BOX-PCR analysis. The characteristics of several plant growth-promoting factors among the isolates revealed the distinct attributes in each allocated group. Under gnotobiotic conditions, inoculation of pepper roots with P. polymyxa isolates significantly increased the biomass in 17 of total 29 treated plants with untreated plants. Experiments on induced systemic resistance (ISR) against bacterial spot pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria in pepper by P. polymyxa strains were conducted and only one isolate (KNUC265) was selected. Further studies into ISR mediation by the KNUC265 strain against the soft-rot pathogen Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora in tobacco demonstrated that the tobacco seedlings exposed to either bacterial volatiles or diffusible metabolites exhibited a reduction in disease severity. In conclusion, ISR and plant growth promotion triggered by P. polymyxa isolates were systemically investigated on pepper for the first time. The P. polymyxa KNUC265 strain, which elicited both ISR and plant growth promotion, could be potentially used in improving the yield of pepper and possibly of other crops.

The advantage of biofloc technology (BFT) in aquaculture is in the prevention of pathogenic transmission. In this study, we performed an investigation on viral, bacterial, and microsporidian parasite infections targeting a total of 194 whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei reared in seven BFT-farms on the west coast of Korea in 2021. Hepatopancreatic and cuticular epithelium and pereiopods tissues of shrimp were tested for the four pathogens, Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP), Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing Acute Hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (VPAHPND), white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), and hepatopancreatic parvovirus (HPV). The microsporidian parasite EHP was detected in the hepatopancreatic tissue of BFT whiteleg shrimp in the Ganghwa region, whereas no other pathogenic bacteria or virus was detected on the shrimp in the seven BFT-farms. As a result of bacterial flora in the rearing water of BFT whiteleg shrimp using DNA microbiome technology, V. chemaguriensis and V. alfacsensis were contained at 0.05% and 0.01%, respectively, but no VPAHPND was detected. These findings will serve as a basis for supporting safe BFT-aquaculture of whiteleg shrimp.
PI201232, a pepper line resistant to Phytophthora capsici Leonian, was crossed with PI2713222 and P1163192, resistant to Xanthomonas campestTis pv. vesicatoria (Doidge) Dye and inheritance of the resistance to each disease and genetic relationship between the two disease resistances was studied. Non-hypersensitive resistance to race 3 of X. c. pv. vesicatoria of PI271322 was inherited in a quantitative mode. Resitance to P. capsici of PI201232 was inherited in a mode close to two dominant alleles. Hypersensitive resistance to race 1 of X. c. pv. vesicatoria of PI271322 was inherited in a mode of single dominant allele. PI 163192 was consistently resistant to both race 1 and race 3 of X c. pv. vesicatoria and the resistance was inherited in a quantitative mode with high dominance effect. Resistance to X. c. pv. vesicatoria was inherited independently from resistance to P. capsici.
Bacterial black spot disease of prune fruit (Prunus salicina cv. formosa) has outbroke around major prune production area, Gimcheon, Euiseong and Gunwi in Gyungbuk province and has caused severe economic loss. Integrons PCR primer was designed along with sample pre-incubation and nested PCR method to enhance detection sensitivity for early detection of bacteria in fields. Designed integrons PCR primer successfully detected Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni from field collected samples, fruit, leaf, branch and even in raindrop collected from prune orchard. Pre-incubation along with nested PCR enhanced sensitivity to detect X. arboricola pv. pruni from seemingly healthy looking, symptomless branches. Designed integrons PCR can be used in prune nursery fields and in plant quarantine practice for the detection of X. arboricola pv. pruni.
Vegetables including Chinese cabbage and radish have been grown in alpine areas such as Muju, Namweon, Jinan and Jangsu during the shortage period of vegetables. The incidence of various diseases, environmental factors such as temperatures and rainfalls, and aphid populations as virus vector were observed at 10-day intervals from July to September in those areas. Disease incidence showed no significant difference among locations. Major diseases in Chin ese cabbage were bacterial soft rot, white spot, downy mildew, mosaic virus, Alternaria leaf spot and Fusarium seedling blight. Major diseases in radish were virus, white rust, black rot, root rot, leaf spot and Fusarium seedling blight. Disease incidence reached peak on Aug. 20 with $27\%$ infection in radish and with $20\%$ infection in Chinese cabbage during the growing season, and declined thereafter. Percentage of infection in each growth stage showed $25\%$ at root thickening stage and $26\%$ at the harvest time in radish; and the head formation stage, $24\%$ at the harvest time. The data indicate that disease incidence in radish increased rapidly at late growing stage and progressively increased in Chinese cabbage Seedling blight caused by Fusarium sp. and root rot caused by Aphanomyces sp. were also observed in those areas. Cool and wet weather appeared to be favorable for disease incidences during the rainy period of growing season although average temperature was about $25^{\circ}C$. Populations of aphids were lower in the alpine vegetable growing area than that of flat areas. Aphids as virus vectors from total aphids collected were $73.5\%$ or 289 virus vectors /993 total aphids in Namweon and $18.1\%$ or 31 virus vectors/171 total aphids in Muju. The most prerevalent species of aphids was Myzus persicae Sulz.

Pepper seedlings of 6-leaf stage were inoculated with cell suspension of Xanthomonas euvesicatoria 1523 7 days after the application of Bion-M by soil-drenching. Disease severity in the treatment with 20 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl, with which Bion-M was composed, was 19%, whereas that of the untreated control was 75%. The resulting control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl was calaulated as much as 74.7%. The control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl was dependent with the applied concentrations and ranged 29.3% to 49.3% at 4.0 and 0.8 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl, respectively. Phytotoxicity was observed at 20.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, as lower leaves became to be yellowed and defoliated. The cell density of inoculum suspension of X. euvesicatoria 1523 affected the control value of acibenzolar-S-methyl. With optical density (O.D.) of 0.5 the control value of 4.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of acibenzolar-S-methyl was 86.0%. However, the control value improved as high as 97.8% at the O.D. value of 0.1. The control value was 75.0% in adult plant of pepper, when acibenzolar-S-methyl was treated by soil-drenching 7 days before inoculation with cell suspension of X. euvesicatoria 1523. The control effect of acibenzolar-S-methyl on pepper bacterial spot was obtained in pepper field, showing that the control value at 10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ was 71.2%.
A leading sweet pepper cultivar, Keystone Resistant Giant #3, was crossed with a line with resistance to Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, PI271322, for incorporation of the resistance and to study the inheritance of resistance to the disease. Seedlings of parents, $F_1$, $F_2$ and backcross populations of a cross between Keystone Resistant Giant #3 and PI271322 were inoculated with race 1 and race 3 of Xanthamonas campestris pv. vesicatoria by infiltrating bacterial suspension into abaxial side of leaves. PI271322 was carrying a gene ($Bs_3$) for hypersensitive resistance to race 1 of X. c. pv. vesicatoria and also a component of non-hypersensitive resistance to race 3 inheriting in a quantitative mode. Correlation coefficient between disease indices to race 1 and race 3 of non-hypersensitive plants in $F_2$ population was highly significant, thus indicating that a component of non-hypersensitive general resistance in PI271322 acted consistently to both races. Individual plants with resistance to both race 1 and race 3 of X. c. pv. vesicatoria were selected and a breeding program for incorporation of the resistance is continued.
During the period from 1999 to 2008, we surveyed the major diseases incidence of rice in Korea. Leaf blast showed 0.85% of the diseased leaf area in 2000 and then consistently decreased to 0.02% by 2008. However, panicle blast irregularly appeared by the years depending on weather conditions for disease development from heading to milk stage of rice. Diseased lesion height of sheath blight had the lowest (10.1%) incidence in 2001 and the highest (21.4%) incidence in 2007. A negative corelation ($r=-0.88^*$) was measured between diseased lesion height of sheat blight and sunshine hours from mid- to late August. In Chunbuk, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam provinces, brown spot occurrence declined since 2001, however, in Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeonnam provinces, it increased since 2005. False smut drastically decreased after showing the highest incidence of 7.59% in panicles in 2000. The correlation coefficient between diseased panicles of false smut and rainfall during the late August was calculated as $0.94^{**}$. Bacterial leaf blight severely increased in the chronically infested fields in Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, Gyeongnam, and Chungnam province since 2003.
