TWO-DIMENSIONAL SIMULATION OF HYDROGEN IODIDE DECOMPOSITION REACTION USING FLUENT CODE FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION USING NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY

  • The operating characteristics of hydrogen iodide (HI) decomposition for hydrogen production were investigated using the commercial computational fluid dynamics code, and various factors, such as hydrogen production, heat of reaction, and temperature distribution, were studied to compare device performance with that expected for device development. Hydrogen production increased with an increase of the surface-to-volume (STV) ratio. With an increase of hydrogen production, the reaction heat increased. The internal pressure and velocity of the HI decomposer were estimated through pressure drop and reducing velocity from the preheating zone. The mass of $H_2O$ was independent of the STV ratio, whereas that of HI decreased with increasing STV ratio.

A Comparison of the Experiment Results and the Radical Degradation Pathways in PCE through Atomic Charge Calculation

  • The intermediate product resulting from the radical degradation experiment of PCE and the atomic charge gained through Gaussian03W were compared against each other. The result was that the ratio of PCE radical degradation was almost 98% or higher after the 9 hr point in reaction time. The reaction speed constant was $0.16hr^{-1}$ and it followed the first reaction. We could see that at each location of the PCE molecule, dechlorination happened at a point where the negative atomic charge was the greatest. Moreover, the intermediate product of PCE radical degradation that was confirmed in the experiment and literature coincided exactly with the intermediate product in the atomic charge calculation. Therefore, when the atomic charge is calculated, the radical degradation pathway of the organic chlorine compound could be forecast.

  • The sulfur-iodine thermochemical water splitting process of GA(General atomic) cycle was studied to produce hydrogen from water by $H_2-I_2-SO_2$ reactions. The experimental scale was 500g based on iodine. The reaction took 100 minutes, products could be separated two liquid phases due to their density difference:HI solution had a density of 2.39~2.61g/cc, and $H_2SO_4$ solution had 1.37~1.38g/cc. The condition of reaction was when weight ratio of $I_2/H_2O$ was 2/1 resulting in good phase separation and productivity.

Formation and Growth of Hydride Blisters in Zr-2.5Nb Pressure Tubes

  • Hydride blisters were formed on the outer surface of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube by a non- uniform steady thermal diffusion process. A thermal gradient was applied to the pressure tube with a heat bath kept at a temperature of 415$^{\circ}C$ and an aluminum cold finger cooled with flowing water of 15$^{\circ}C$. Optical microscopy and tree-dimensional laser profilometry were used to characterize the hydride blisters with different hydrogen concentrations and thermal diffusion time. Hydride blisters were expected to start at a hydrogen concentration of 30 - 70 ppm and a thermal diffusion time of 4 - 6$\times$10$^{5}$ sec. The hydride blister size increases with higher hydrogen concentrations and longer thermal diffusion time . Some of the samples revealed cracks on the hydride blisters. The ratio of hydride blister depth to height was estimated as approximately 8: 1.

  • An optimized method for determining beta-emitting $^{241}$ Pu in the presence of alpha-emitting nuclides was developed using a liquid scintillation counting system. PSA-level was setting using pulse-shape discrimination. The $^{241}$ Pu counting channel was adjusted for maximum value of FM using the $^{241}$ Pu standard source. The volume of scintillant was determined for the maximum value of counting efficiency. The optimized method of $^{241}$ Pu has been applied to environmental samples to measure concentration of $^{241}$ Pu in soils and mosses. Also it has been identified the origin of Pu deposited in Korea from the activity ratio $^{241}$ Pu / $^{239,240}$Pu.

  • When a heavy-duty power manipulator with high reduction ratio joints is used as telemanipulator in teleoperated systems, its control inputs are frequently saturated resulting in deteriorated stability and poor position tracking performance. This paper proposes a bilateral control algorithm for 3-DOF heavy-duty power manipulators, which compensates for saturation. The proposed bilateral control algorithm provides precise position control performance regardless of saturation.

  • Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) is well-known for fabricating conformal and uniform films with a well-controlled thickness at the atomic level over any type of supporting substrate. We prepared nickel oxide (NiO) thin films via PEALD using bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)-nickel ($Ni(EtCp)_2$) and $O_2$ plasma. To optimize the PEALD process, the effects of parameters such as the precursor pulsing time, purging time, $O_2$ plasma exposure time, and power were examined. The optimal PEALD process has a wide deposition-temperature range of $100-325^{\circ}C$ and a growth rate of $0.037{\pm}0.002nm$ per cycle. The NiO films deposited on a silicon substrate with a high aspect ratio exhibited excellent conformality and high linearity with respect to the number of PEALD cycles, without nucleation delay.

  • 우라늄 변환시설 가동 중 발생하여 라군(lagoon)에 저장중인 방사성 슬러지 폐기물에 대한 처리는 시설 해체과정에서 매우 중요한 업무 중 하나이다. 슬러지 구성성분 중 다량을 차지하는 질산암모늄의 폭발 위험성 등으로 인해 미생물을 이용한 질산염의 분해는 질산염을 안정적으로 처리할 수 있는 효과적인 방법이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 라군 슬러지의 약 60 wt%를 차지하는 질산염을 혐기성 균주의 하나인 Pseudomonas halodenidificans를 이용하여 탈질하기위한 공정 변수에 대한 영향을 평가하였다. 온도, 질산염 농도, 전자공여체의 영향, C/N 비율, 초기 접종하는 균주의 비율, pH등의 공정변수에 대하여 실험한 이번 결과는 향후 연속식 공정 설계를 위한 기초 자료로 사용될 것이다.

LOCAL BURNUP CHARACTERISTICS OF PWR SPENT NUCLEAR FUELS DISCHARGED FROM YEONGGWANG-2 NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

  • Spent $UO_2$ nuclear fuel discharged from a nuclear power plant (NPP) contains fission products, U, Pu, and other actinides. Due to neutron capture by $^{238}U$ in the rim region and a temperature gradient between the center and the rim of a fuel pellet, a considerable increase in the concentration of fission products, Pu, and other actinides are expected in the pellet periphery of high burnup fuel. The characterization of the radial profiles of the various isotopic concentrations is our main concern. For an analysis, spent nuclear fuels originating from the Yeonggwang-2 pressurized water reactor (PWR) were chosen as the test specimens. In this work, the distributions of some actinide isotopes were measured from center to rim of the spent fuel specimens by a radiation shielded laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) system. Sampling was performed along the diameter of the specimen by reducing the sampling intervals from 500 ${\mu}m$ in the center to 100 ${\mu}m$ in the pellet periphery region. It was observed that the isotopic concentration ratios for minor actinides in the center of the specimen remain almost constant and increase near the pellet periphery due to the rim effect apart from the $^{236}U$ to $^{235}U$ ratio, which remains approximately constant. In addition, the distributions of local burnup were derived from the measured isotope ratios by applying the relationship between burnup and isotopic ratio for plutonium and minor actinides calculated by the ORIGEN2 code.

전자선 조사 방법을 통한 생분해성고분자의 표면개질 특성 평가 (Surface Modification of Poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) Nanofibers by Electron-beam Irradiation)

  • Electrospun nanofibers prepared with synthetic biodegradable polymer have some limitations in regulating adhesion, proliferation, and spreading of cells because of their surface hydrophobicity and absence of cell-interaction. In this study, we functionalized the electrospun poly(L-lactide-co-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PLCL) nanofibers with acrylic acid (AAc) to modulate their surface hydrophilicity using electron-beam irradiation method and then measured grafting ratio of AAc, water contact angle, and ATR-FTIR of AAc-grafted nanofibers. A grafting ratio of AAc on the nanofibers was increased as irradiation dose and AAc concentration were increased. AAc-grafted nanofibers also have higher wettability than non-modified nanofibers. In conclusion, those surface-modified nanofibers may be an essential candidate to regulate cell attachment in tissue engineering applications.
