  • This paper focuses on a horizontal waypoint tracking and a speed control of large diameter unmanned underwater vehicles (LDUUVs) with X-stern configuration plane. The concerned design problem is converted into an asymptotic stabilization of the error dynamics with respect to the desired yaw angle and surge speed. It is proved that the error dynamics under the proposed control scheme based on the linear control and the feedback linearization can be considered as a cascade system; the cascade system is asymptotically stable if its nominal systems are so. This stability connection enables to separately deal with the waypoint tracking problem and the speed control one. By using the sector nonlinearity, the nominal system with nonlinearities is modeled as a polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) system with parametric uncertainties. Then, sufficient linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions for its asymptotic stabilizability are derived in the sense of Lyapunov stability criterion. An example is given to show the validity of the proposed methodology.

  • An asymptotic solution of electromagnetic waves scattered by an arbitrary-angled dielectric wedge in the E-polarized plane wave incidence is obtained by adding a correction to the physical optical fields given in the previous paper of these companion papers, Part I. The source for the asymptotic correction field valid in the far-field region can be equivalent to the multipole line sources at the tip of the wedge, of which coefficients are evaluated numerically by solving a dual series equation. The corrected field patterns are plotted for the typical case treated in Part I.

  • Non-uniform and unsteady inflow into a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) brings about an asymmetric flow field on the rotor plane and an unsteady aerodynamic load on the blades. In the present paper effects of yawed inflow and wind shear are analyzed by an inviscid aerodynamic model based on the asymptotic acceleration potential method. In the analysis the rotor blades are represented by spanwise and chordwise pressure distribution composed of analytical first-order asymptotic solutions for the Laplace equation. As the actual wind field experienced by a HAWT is turbulent, the effects of the turbulence are also examined using the Veers' model.

  • A semi-infinite parallel crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under anti-plane clamped displacement is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform a Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined, where the results give the more general expression applicable to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the parallel crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor and energy release rate are also obtained as a closed form, which are the results applicable to the problem both of dynamic and static crack under the same geometry as this study. The stress intensity factor approaches zero at the critical crack velocity which is less than the shear wave velocity, but in typical case of isotropic or orthotropic material agrees with the velocity of shear wave. Also a circular shear stress around crack tip is considered, from which the stress is shown to be approximately symmetric about the horizontal axis. Referring to the maximum stress criteria, it could be shown that a brenched crack is formed by crack growth as crack velocity increases.

  • A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strips under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform the problem is formulated and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. Using the near tip fields of stresses and displacements, the dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form of the stress intensiy factor.

  • This paper suggests a new non-linear friction compensation for digital control systems. This control adopts a hysteresis nonlinear element which can introduce the phase lead of the control system to compensate the phase delay comes from the inherent time delay of a digital control. A proper Lyapunov function is selected and the Lyapunov direct method is used to prove the asymptotic stability of the suggested control.

  • In this paper, a new seven-parameter Mittag-Leffler function of a single complex variable is proposed as a generalization of the standard Mittag-Leffler function, certain generalizations of Mittag-Leffler function, hypergeometric function and confluent hypergeometric function. Certain essential analytic properties are mainly discussed, such as radius of convergence, order, type, differentiation, Mellin-Barnes integral representation and Euler transform in the complex plane. Its relation to Fox-Wright function and H-function is also developed.

Binary Nature Revealed in Circumstellar Spiral-Shell Patterns

  • With the advent of high-resolution high-sensitivity observations, spiral patterns have been revealed around several asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Such patterns can provide possible evidence for the existence of central binary stars embedded in outflowing circumstellar envelopes. It is, however, not generally recognized that the binary induced pattern, vertically extended from the orbital plane, exhibits a ring-like pattern with an inclined viewing angle. I will first review the binary-induced spiral-shell patterns on the AGB circumstellar envelopes with the effect of inclination angle with respect to the orbital plane, of which large inclination cases reveal incomplete ring-like patterns. I will describe a method of extracting such spiral-shell from the gas kinematics of an incomplete ring-like pattern to place constraints on the characteristics of the (unknown) central binary stars. This first success may open the possibility of connecting the ring-like patterns commonly found in the AGB circumstellar envelopes and in the outer parts of (pre-)planetary nebulae and pointing to the conceivable presence of central binary systems, which may give a clue for the onset of asymmetrical planetary nebulae.

  • Stress intensity factor of semi-infinite parallel crack propagation with constant velocity in dissimilar orthotropic strip under out-of-plane clamped desplacement is investigated. Using Fourier integral transforms the boundary value problem is derived by a pair of dual integral equation and finally reduced to a single Wiener-Hopf equation. By applying Wiener-Hopf technique the equation is solved. Applying this result the asymptotic stress fields near the crack tip are determined, from which the stress intensity factor is obtained in closed form. The more the ratio of anisotropy or the ratio of bi-material shear modulus increase in the main material including the crack, the more the stress intensity factor increases. Discontinuity in the stress intensity factor is found as the parallel crack approaches the interface. In special case, the results of isotropic materials agree well with those by the previous researchers.
