A prototype probabilistic approach to thickness design for asphalt pavement surface course was developed using first-order second moment probability model. The tensile strain (load effect) developing at the bottom of surface layer due to the wheel load and the critical strain (resistance) of asphalt concrete were used as random variables for pavement reliability analysis. Based on the parameters for load effect and resistance data collected from reference and field, simulated data were generated by Monte Carlo method for reliability evaluation of the pavement for a typical rural highway. Thickness of pavement surface course was defined in terms of target reliability of the pavement, growth factor of traffic, design life of pavement and resistance of the asphalt concrete to be placed on the pavement. According to these rationales, prototype thickness design chrats were sugested through example studies. From these, similar design charts can be developed for many pavements if appropriate data and target reliability are determined.
PURPOSES : This study aims to evaluate the performance of interlocking block pavement system for low speed highway. METHODS : Through on-site monitoring, environmental impact assessment of interlocking block pavement such as heat island reduction, traffic safety, noise pollution were evaluated as compared with asphalt pavement. Also the pavement condition and roughness were evaluated according to performance period. RESULTS : Surface temperature of interlocking block pavement was about 7 degree lower than asphalt pavement in midsummer. Compared to asphalt pavement, vehicle speed reduction effect of interlocking block pavement was about 2kph. For low speed driving, the noise pollution was measured at a similar level for both asphalt and interlocking block pavement. After 42month service period, the breakage of block was only 0.24% for the whole surveyed area. IRI of interlock block pavement was estimated within the range of 5~8m/km. CONCLUSIONS : Depending on the performance monitoring results such as heat island reduction, providing traffic safety and keeping a good pavement condition for a long service period, it assures that interlocking block pavement was applicable for low speed road.
PURPOSES : The objective of this paper is to develop a pavement performance model based on the Bayesian algorithm, and compare the measured and predicted performance data. METHODS : In this paper, several pavement types such as SMA (stone mastic asphalt), PSMA (polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt), PMA (polymer-modified asphalt), SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified asphalt, and DGA (dense-graded asphalt) are modeled in terms of the performance evaluation of pavement structures, using the Bayesian algorithm. RESULTS : From case studies related to the performance model development, the statistical parameters of the mean value and standard deviation can be obtained through the Bayesian algorithm, using the initial performance data of two different pavement cases. Furthermore, an accurate performance model can be developed, based on the comparison between the measured and predicted performance data. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the case studies, it is concluded that the determined coefficients of the nonlinear performance models can be used to accurately predict the long-term performance behaviors of DGA and modified asphalt concrete pavements. In addition, the developed models were evaluated through comparison studies between the initial measurement and prediction data, as well as between the final measurement and prediction data. In the model development, the initial measured data were used.
The asphalt pavement is usually non-uniform since achieving a non-segregated and homogeneous asphalt mixture is very difficult. The segregation can occur in the mixed material before it is fed onto the road and it become segregated as it is being placed onto the road surface. Note that this segregation determines the performance of the asphalt pavement. Hence, it is necessary to check the segregation by estimating the density of the asphalt pavement in the field. In this paper, a research on estimating the density of the asphalt mixture by measuring the dielectric constant of the material is conducted. An RF transceiver and an antenna are designed and tested to a series of asphalt density samples, and discussions are shown.
PURPOSES : Recently, attempts have been made to evaluate tire-pavement noise based on a measure of Mean Profile Depth (MPD). However, equivalent values of MPD appear to correspond to different levels of tire-pavement noise, which indicates that other factors such as texture wavelength need to be included to improve the accuracy of noise prediction. A single index to represent texture wavelength is proposed in this study. A consistent relationship between tire-pavement noise and texture wavelength on asphalt concrete pavement is observed. METHODS : Profile data and tire-pavement noise data were collected from a number of expressway sections in Korea. In addition, texture wavelength was defined by a Peak Number (PN), which was calculated using profile data. Statistical analysis was performed to find the relationship between the PN and tire-pavement noise. RESULTS : As a result of this study, a linear relationship between PN and tire-pavement noise is observed on asphalt concrete pavement. CONCLUSIONS : Tire-pavement noise on asphalt concrete pavement can be predicted from PN information.
Geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement is a pavement type applicable to overlay for repair in addition to new construction. The geosynthetic materials are placed between the asphalt layers to stop or delay propagation of the cracking existing at lower layers and to reduce the rutting. In this study, the cracking, rutting, IRI, and deflection were investigated to compare the performance between geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement and ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement. Based on field conditions, the 11 sections were classified into 3 groups; sections proper to compare, sections with restrictions to compare, sections with difficulties in comparing, and the data was statistically analyzed. Larger resistance to rutting and increased IRI were measured at the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement sections comparing to the ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement sections. However, the deflections of the pavements were similar and the resistance to the cracking could not be compared because of short pavement lives.
Water retaining pavement is a pavement to lower the surface temperature by using evaporation of the water that the pavement contains when the pavement is heated by the sun in the daytime. The objective of this study is to develop water retaining materials. In this study we evaluated the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material. We produced dense grade asphalt pavement, porous asphalt pavement, semi-rigid Pavement, semi-rigid pavement included a charcoal and semi-rigid pavement included a sepiolite, and then tested surface temperature characteristics. The test result says that water retaining pavements using a sepiolite and a charcoal lower surface temperature more than $10^{\circ}C$ compared to dense grade asphalt pavement. We confirm the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material according to the test results.
PURPOSES : The permeable pavement type has been rapidly developed for solving problems regarding traffic noise in the area of housing complex and heavy rainwater drainage in order to account for the climate change. In this regards, the objective of this study is to figure out the characteristics of pavement types. METHODS : The laboratory test for deriving optimum asphalt content (OAC) was conducted using the mixtures of the permeable asphalt surface for the pavement surface from Marshall compaction method. Based on its results, the pavement construction at the test field was conducted. After that, the site performance tests for measuring the traffic noise, strength and permeability were carried out for the relative evaluation in 2 months after the traffic opening. The specific site tests are noble close proximity method (NCPX), Light falling deflectometer test (LFWD) and the compact permeability test. RESULTS : The ordered highest values of the traffic noise level can be found such as normal dense graded asphalt, drainage and porous structure types. In the results from LFWD, the strength values of the porous and drainage asphalt types had been lower, but the strength of normal asphalt structure had relatively stayed high. CONCLUSIONS :The porous structure has been shown to perform significantly better in permeability and noise reduction than others. In addition to this study, the evaluation of the properties and the determination of the optimum thickness for the subgrade course under the porous pavement will be conducted using ground investigation technique in the further research.

The results of a recent case study for material characterizations and structural evaluation to design asphalt overlay thickness of William P Hobby airport in Houston, Texas are presented herein. The existing runway 12R-30L of Hobby airport consisted of thick asphalt overlay over Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and the localized surface shoving as evident in the closure of surface groove has been observed recently. Using the field cored asphalt concrete mixtures, measurements of percent air voids, asphalt content and aggregate gradation were conducted to find out the causations of surface shoving and groove closure. The FAA layered elastic program, LEDFAA was utilized to evaluate pavement structural conditions for new asphalt overlay. Two different composition assumptions for existing pavement were made to evaluate the pavement as followings: 1) APC, Asphalt Concrete Overlay over PCC pavement and 2) AC, Asphalt Concrete pavement. Based on laboratory testing results, a ratio of percent passing #200 to asphalt content ranged 1.1 to 2.2, which is considered a high ratio and a tendency of tender mix design was observed. Thus, the localized surface shoving and groove closure of the runway 12R-30L could be attributed to the use of excessive fine contents and tender mix design. Based on the structural evaluation results, it was ascertained that the analysis assuming the pavement structure as AC pavement gives more realistic structural life when the asphalt overlay is thicker enough compared to PCC layer because the existing PCC pavement under asphalt overlay acts more like a high quality base material.

The purpose of this study is to propose a pavement analysis system which considers dynamic effects resulted from the various vehicle speeds. Vehicle loading effects were estimated by loading frequency and dynamic loads under various vehicle speeds. In addition, a proposed analysis model takes the non-linear temperature using a predictive model for dynamic modulus in asphalt layer and the non-linear stress in the unbound material. To examine adequacy of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of non-linear temperature in asphalt layer and non-linear stress conditions in unbound material, this study divided layers of asphalt pavement structures with 10 layers in asphalt, 2 layers in subbase and 1 layer in subgrade. In order to verify the pavement analysis system that considers various speeds, deflections of pavement calculated using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program, were compared with the results of field tests under various speeds.
