  • The archival objects are tangible evidence reflecting public work as forming archives which are administrative, historic, symbolic, cultural and artistic value. They are produced from the various countries so that they have different material and manufacture techniques. However there are difficulties in conservation and management because the material investigation and conservation management system are not established. Therefore this research presents fundamental data for the efficient conservation management by material investigation and condition check metal archival objects. Among the public official presents made of metal, 12 pieces which are discoloration, oxidation, loss or crack are chosen for this research. In order to examine extensive condition of metal archival objects, the condition check card used from the domestic museum and the national museum in Japan are collected and then the new check card is produced. X-ray is used to know the making technique, binding means between different material. Portable-XRF is also used for the chemical composition analysis of metal archival objects, and then classifying respectively according to their material. As a result of condition check, it is possible to investgate the appearance character, deteriorated parts and weak parts of structure. Also P-XRF could find out the composition of metal archival objects which is different from existing condition check card. Therefore the research results can be used as fundamental data for further conservation and management as well as long-term conservation.

  • This essay introduces the basic method and program required to meet some necessary conditions of building university archives. By the phrase 'method and program', I intend the effective means of regularly but circumstantially controling the ways to the archival purposes proper which can be defined as the keeping of evidences and the broadening of information pool in terms of the evidential and informational natures or values of records. My starting point is about the matters of overcoming a standard method of induction which has long prescribed much passive procedures in the archival work. Considering the differences in the records and archives management-practices between West and Korea, I tentatively try to add some active elements to the archival work among which the collection for the expanding evidences and informations may firstly emphasized. While this collecting activity normally depends on the existing 'collections' and 'manuscripts', I cannot exclude the possibility of collections the materials, being likely to be registered in any poor or insufficient record groups. In the similar context, this kind of activity may and must be expanded beyond the university boundaries so at to arrange the cornerstones of archive-based local studies in the various disciplines. Here I premise another role of university archives, the role as 'science archives'. These archives within university archives seem likely to function in likewise the special collections within Western university libraries. What I mean here, however, is the archival groups purposedly gathered or acquisited according to more detail and narrower plan in order to meet the various demands from the different disciplines for the primary sources. The archival procedures from this revised method and program may, I hope, satisfy some of the preconditions of building university archives before the archives will actually function as a sub-institution of an university preserving legal, administrative and financial evidences, thus keeping identity and continuity of the university on the one hand, and as a local information center of supplying the archival contents on effectual demand from the field of local studies on the other. Finally, I conclude with a suggestion concerning the cooperation of all the parties of archival works. Proposing the 'Regional Research Center Program' in the field of technology and engineering as a model for the cooperation, I suggest that universities, private/public organizations, and central and local governments may work together for surveying the scattered ancient and modern documents as well as for building archives under the matching fund.

  • This study analyzed the usefulness of Web 2.0 techniques for improving archival information service. As a result, Web 2.0 was found to be useful for information service in National Archives of Korea(NAK). The results show that Open API is the most influential factor and RSS is the second-most useful factor for information services. These results can be used as a framework for developing Web 2.0-based information services in the NAK.

  • The purpose of this study is to find necessary factors and to suggest the future directions for the successful graduate archival education in Korea by comparing current programs hi Korea and North America. Name of the schools, credits, required and elective courses, practice, research and thesis are compared by analyzing web sites and literature review. Development of more various Master's programs, a separate degree in Master of Archival Studies, more credits for the degree, standardization of curriculum, and the working environments for practicum, internship and research are found as important elements for the program. In the end, more collaborations with other disciplines, more faculties with working experiences and Ph. D. degree in archival studies, communications among the universities, archival institutions and professional societies/associations, continuous research on the programs, improvement of the quality of archivists, strong national supports for archives and records and establishment of the strong quality control for being archivists are suggested for the future directions.

  • This study aimed to analyze and collect research trends of archival management standards in Korea. For this purpose, keywords from the titles, author keywords, and abstracts of papers related to records management standards were statistically analyzed to investigate the major keywords with high-frequency. Network analysis with high frequency keywords was also conducted to identify the subject areas of research in archival management standards. The analysis period is from 2000 to the present, and a total of 212 papers were collected from domestic academic paper search sites such as RISS and ScienceON. As a result of the analysis, from 2000 to 2010, OAIS for archive design, digital record preservation with OAIS, and analysis on ISO standards were mainly conducted in research areas. From 2011 until now, records management certification and ISAD(G)'s conversion to RiC emerged as new research areas. This study will be expected to be basic data to understand research trends in records management standards in Korea and to be a reference for research on records management standards studies.

  • This article intends to provide a direction for reconstructing the national regime of archival appraisal in electronic record environments. Functional appraisal, which inevitably carries out for appraising electronic records, has defects in aspect of selecting archives important in a national point of views. To do so, this article discusses defects of functional appraisal, and then suggests the necessity of archival appraisal strategies that complements functional appraisal. To investigate this archival appraisal strategies, it analyzes Australia's Whole-of-Government Functional Analysis, United Kingdom's Acquisition Policy and Appraisal Policy, Germany's Cooperative Cross-Archives Appraisal and Canada's Macro Appraisal. Ultimately, this analysis is able to establish a base of the regime of archival appraisal which will harmonize primary value at current stage with secondary value at non-current stage in a national point of views.

  • The research aims to suggest descriptive elements for developing archival authority records in university archives through converging archival information descriptive rules with EAC-CFP, data structure standards. To achieve the purpose, the research conducted the following research phases: first, to analyze the main characteristics of record producers according to the features of both functions and organizations of the university. Second, to analyze the descriptive elements by comparing the rules between ISAAR(CPF) and the guidelines of the authority records of NAK and suggest descriptive elements to build archival authority records. Finally, to suggest the finally deducted descriptive elements by matching up with those of EAC-CPF. The significance of the result is to provide both standardized access points to retrieve university records and to search the contextual information of record production in the online environments by converging the data standard structure, EAC-CPF.

  • The role of an archivist should include not only traditional archives management but also new archives management based on an understanding of electronic records and information technology. In this study, to verify the adequacy and content validity of the components, knowledge categories, and knowledge contents of the guideline for a graduate program in archival studies, the Delphi survey was carried out. As a result of the Delphi survey, the components of the guideline consisted of "preface," "curriculum," "faculty," "structure of the learning process," "administrative resources," and "conclusions," and the educational content consisted of 8 knowledge categories and 44 knowledge contents. This study aims to present the minimum components to be followed in the graduate program of archival science through the development of the guideline model and present educational contents to educate archivists with theoretical and practical capabilities. The model can be used as basic data for a future guideline for a graduate program in archival studies.
