In this study, the finite element analysis using joint elements, bolt elements, and shell elements is presented to investigate the behavior of bolted connections. The contact of plates and the high-strength, pretensioned bolts are simply idealized by joint elements and bolt elements, respectively. The initial stiffness is determined through the presented method and the non-linear analysis is archived by a constant-arc-length method based on Newton-Raphson method. The analysis results of a semi-rigid connection(web & flange angles) and a moment connection (shear & moment plates) demonstrate the exactness and applicability of the presented method. And the results indicates that the consideration of slip and 3-dimensional deformation is needed for an accurate prediction of bolted connections.
Children are particularly vulnerable to adverse health effects associated with heavy metal exposure. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between proximity to an industry complex and blood lead and urinary cadmium levels for children aged 7-13 who lived in Ulsan where a big petrochemical complex is located. We conducted a questionnaire survey to collect data including sociodemographics, daily habits, residential environment, etc. We also analyzed blood lead and urinary cadmium levels using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Data were analyzed using regression analysis. All statistical analyses were conducted with SAS software version 9.2. We calculated distance by using a Geographic Information System (ArcGIS version 10.0). The geometric mean blood lead level was 1.55 ${\mu}g/dL$ (boys: 1.59 ${\mu}g/dL$, girls: 1.51 ${\mu}g/dL$), and the geometric mean urinary cadmium level was 0.51 ${\mu}g/g$ creatinine (boys: 0.45 ${\mu}g/g$ creatinine, girls: 0.58 ${\mu}g/g$ creatinine). In the results of regression analyses, we found that urinary cadmium levels significantly decreased as distance between residence and industrial complex increased after adjusting for age, gender, income, passive smoking and the length of residence. This result was opposite to that for lead levels. Our observations support the hypothesis that urinary cadmium levels in children are related to their proximity to an industrial complex.

Overhead catenary system of electric railway has overlap sections which devide and tighten trolley wire supplying electric power to train, where current collection performances may become worse according to railway speed-up. Current collection tests conducted at 400 km/h test-bed section of Honam high-speed railway show that balanced line arrangement at overlap section is needed to secure current collection without arc generation between trolley wire and train current collection device. This paper proposes a design procedure of the overlap section to allow for tension increase and uplift of the trolley wires according to railway speed-up. By applying the proposed procedure to the overhead catenary system of Honam high-speed railway, it is suggested that the minimum span length should be 33.2 m for railway speed-up to 350 km/h and 43.7 m for speed-up to 400 km/h.

The thermal postbuckling and vibration characteristics of cylindrical composite panel subject to thermal loads are analyzed using finite elements. The von-Karman nonlinear displacement-strain relation based on the layerwise theory is applied to consider large deflections due to thermal loads. Cylindrical arc-length method is used to take into account the snapping phenomena. Thermal snapping and vibration characteristics are investigated for various structural parameters such as thickness ratio, shallowness angle and boundary conditions. The present results show that thermal snapping changes the mode shapes as well as static deformations.
Plant leaf classification is a significant application of image processing techniques in modern agriculture. In this paper, a multi-granular angle description method is proposed for plant leaf classification and retrieval. The proposed method can describe leaf information from coarse to fine using multi-granular angle features. In the proposed method, each leaf contour is partitioned first with equal arc length under different granularities. And then three kinds of angle features are derived under each granular partition of leaf contour: angle value, angle histogram, and angular ternary pattern. These multi-granular angle features can capture both local and globe information of the leaf contour, and make a comprehensive description. In leaf matching stage, the simple city block metric is used to compute the dissimilarity of each pair of leaf under different granularities. And the matching scores at different granularities are fused based on quotient space theory to obtain the final leaf similarity measurement. Plant leaf classification and retrieval experiments are conducted on two challenging leaf image databases: Swedish leaf database and Flavia leaf database. The experimental results and the comparison with state-of-the-art methods indicate that proposed method has promising classification and retrieval performance.

An experimental study on the ultimate behaviors of the mild carbon steel (SPHC) fillet-welded connection is presented in this paper. Seven specimens were fabricated by the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). All specimens failed by typical block shear fracture in the base metal of welded connections not weld metal. Block shear fracture observed in the base metal of welded connection is a combination of single tensile fracture transverse to the loading direction and two shear fractures longitudinal to the loading direction. Test strengths were compared with strength predictions by the current design equations and suggested equations by previous researchers. It is known that current design specifications (AISC2010 and KBC2016) and Oosterhof & Driver's equation underestimated overly the ultimate strength of the welded connection by on average 44%, 31%, respectively and prediction by Topkaya's equation was the closest to the test results. Consequently, modified equation is required to be proposed considering the stress triaxiality effect and material property difference on the block shear strength for base metal fracture in welded connections fabricated with mild carbon steel.

In general, lithography techniques are applied when machining single-crystal silicon in nanoscale applications; however, these techniques involve low degrees of freedom for the vertical shapes. By applying mechanical techniques to machine silicon, nanopatterns having various types of vertical shapes can be manufactured. In this study, we determined the ductile-brittle machining transition point and analyzed the- variation of the specific cutting resistance within the ductile machining region in nanoscale applications. When brittle fracture occurred during the nanoscale cutting, the depth of cut and cutting force increased and decreased rapidly, respectively. The first point of rapid increase in the depth of cut was defined as the ductile-brittle machining point. Subsequently, the shape of the machining tool was observed using a scanning electron microscope to calibrate the machining area, considering the tip blunting. The specific cutting resistance decreased continuously and converged to a certain value during the nanoscale cutting. The decrease and convergence in the value can be attributed to the decrease in the ratio of the arc length to the area of the machining tool and silicon.
This paper numerically investigated the behavior of built-up square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns under combined preload and axial compression. The finite element (FE) models of target columns were verified in terms of failure mode, axial load-deformation curve and ultimate strength. A full-range analysis on the axial load-deformation response as well as the interaction behavior was conducted to reveal the composite mechanism. The parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of material strengths and geometric sizes. Subsequently, influence of construction preload on the full-range behavior and confinement effect was investigated. Numerical results indicate that the axial load-deformation curve can be divided into four working stages where the contact pressure of curling rib arc gradually disappears as the steel tube buckles; increasing width-to-thickness (B/t) ratio can enhance the strength enhancement index (e.g., an increment of 1.88% from B/t=40 to B/t=100), though ultimate strength and ductility are decreased; stiffener length and lip inclination angle display a slight influence on strength enhancement index and ductility; construction preload can degrade the plastic deformation capacity and postpone the origin appearance of contact pressure, thus making a decrease of 14.81%~27.23% in ductility. Finally, a revised equation for determining strain εscy corresponding to ultimate strength was proposed to evaluate the plastic deformation capacity of built-up square CFST columns.

The insulator used for the transmission line is a device that is bonded with a cap, pin, ceramic, and cement to withstand insulation capacity and mechanical load. The insulator design can help to reduce the dispersion of the electric field; thus, the optimization of today's design, especially as demanded power grows, is critical. The designs of four manufacturers were used to perform a comparative analysis. Under dry circumstances of the new product, an electric field distribution study was done with no pollutants attached. Manufacturer D's design has the best voltage uniformity of 24.33% and the arc length of 500 mm or more. Manufacturer C's design has an equalizing voltage of more than 2% higher than that of other manufacturers. The importance of the design of the insulator and the number of connections according to the installation conditions is very efficient for transmission lines that will increase in the future.
Based on the ideas of variational differential quadrature (VDQ) and finite element method (FEM), a numerical approach named as VDQFEM is applied herein to study the large deformations of plate-type structures under static loading with arbitrary shape hole made of functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) in the context of higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The material properties of composite are approximated based upon the modified Halpin-Tsai model and rule of mixture. Furthermore, various FG distribution patterns are considered along the thickness direction of plate for GPLs. Using novel vector/matrix relations, the governing equations are derived through a variational approach. The matricized formulation can be efficiently employed in the coding process of numerical methods. In VDQFEM, the space domain of structure is first transformed into a number of finite elements. Then, the VDQ discretization technique is implemented within each element. As the last step, the assemblage procedure is performed to derive the set of governing equations which is solved via the pseudo arc-length continuation algorithm. Also, since HSDT is used herein, the mixed formulation approach is proposed to accommodate the continuity of first-order derivatives on the common boundaries of elements. Rectangular and circular plates under various boundary conditions with circular/rectangular/elliptical cutout are selected to generate the numerical results. In the numerical examples, the effects of geometrical properties and reinforcement with GPL on the nonlinear maximum deflection-transverse load amplitude curve are studied.
