  • In this paper the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP(sequential linear programming) CONLIN(convex linearization) MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore when it is considered with the expense of computation MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem it was applied to the helicopter tail boom con-sidering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. it is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approxima-tion scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

  • In this paper, a useful rigid-plastic finite element method with various numerical schemes is presented for simulation of an orbital forming process. A new approach to reduce volume change during simulation is presented and an approximation method to reduce computational time is also presented. An actual orbital forming process found in a bearing making industry is simulated by the presented approach. The simulated results of the orbital forming process are compared with the experimental results.

  • A consistent general order nodal method for solving the 3-D neutron diffusion equation in (x-y-z) geometry has ben derived by using a weighted integral technique and expanding the spatial variables by the Legendre orthogonal series function. The equation set derived can be converted into any order nodal schemes. It forms a compact system for general order of nodal moments. The method utilizes the analytic solutions of the transverse-integrated quasi -one dimensional equations and a consistent expansion for the spatial variables so that it renders the use of an approximation for the transverse leakages no necessary. Thus, we can expect extremely accurate solutions and the solution would converge exactly when the mesh width is decreased or the approximation order is increased since the equation set is consistent mathematically.

  • We propose a spectral-efficient coordinated direct and relayed transmission (CDRT) scheme for a relay-assisted downlink system with two users. The proposed scheme is based on backscatter communication (BC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique. With the proposed BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme, both users can receive one packet within one time slot. In contrast, in existing NOMA-CDRT schemes, the far user is only able to receive one packet in two time slots due to the half-duplex operation of the relay. We investigate the outage of the BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme, and derive the outage probability expressions in closed-form based on Gamma distribution approximation and Gaussian approximation. Numerical results show that the analytical results are accurate and the BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme outperforms the conventional NOMA-CDRT significantly.

  • The aim of this paper is to introduce a new iterative process and show that our iteration scheme is faster than other existing iteration schemes with the help of numerical examples. Next, we have established convergence and stability results for the approximation of fixed points of the contractive-like mapping in the framework of uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we have established some convergence results for the approximation of the fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping.

  • This paper proposes a frequency transfer function synthesis for approximating a high-order model with resonance to a low-order model in the frequency domain. The presented model approximation method is based on minimizing the error function weighted by the numerator polynomial of approximated models, which is used of the RLS(Recursive Least Square) technique to estimate the coefficient vector of approximated models. The proposed method provides better fitting in a low frequency and peak resonance. And an example is given to illustrate feasibilities of the suggested schemes.

  • In-network storage is an effective technique for avoiding network congestion and reducing power consumption in continuous data collection in wireless sensor networks. In recent years, network coding based storage design has been proposed as a means to achieving ubiquitous access that permits any query to be satisfied by a few random (nearby) storage nodes. To maintain data consistency in continuous data collection applications, the readings of a sensor over time must be sent to the same set of storage nodes. In this paper, we present an efficient approach to updating data at storage nodes to maintain data consistency at the storage nodes without decoding out the old data and re-encoding with new data. We studied a transmission strategy that identifies a set of storage nodes for each source sensor that minimizes the transmission cost and achieves ubiquitous access by transmitting sparsely using the sparse matrix theory. We demonstrate that the problem of minimizing the cost of transmission with coding is NP-hard. We present an approximation algorithm based on regarding every storage node with memory size B as B tiny nodes that can store only one packet. We analyzed the approximation ratio of the proposed approximation solution, and compared the performance of the proposed coding approach with other coding schemes presented in the literature. The simulation results confirm that significant performance improvement can be achieved with the proposed transmission strategy.

  • In this note, we propose two methods of adaptive sliding mode control(SMC) schemes in which fuzzy systems(FS) are utilized to approximate the unknown system functions. In the first method, a FS is utilized to approximate the unknown function f of the nonlinear system $\chi$$^{(n)}$$\chi$=f(equation omitted), t)+b(equation omitted), t)u and the robust adaptive law is proposed to reduce the approximation errors between the true nonlinear function and fuzzy approximator, FS. In the second method, two FSs are utilized to approximate f and b, respectively. The robust control law is also designed. The stabilities of proposed control schemes are proved.

  • This paper describes a numerical study of three-dimensional buoyant turbulent flow in a stairwell model with three convective differencing schemes, which include the upwind differencing scheme, the hybrid scheme and QUICK scheme. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved with a two-equation turbulence model. The Boussinesq approximation is used to model buoyancy terms in the governing equations. Three-dimensional predictions of the velocity and temperature fields are presented and are compared with experimental data. Three-dimensional simulations with each scheme have predicted the overall features of the flow fairly satisfactorily. A better agreement with experimental is achieved with QUICK scheme.

  • During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and numerous inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. The complexity of these constitutive equations generally requires a stable and accurate numerical method. To obtain the increment of state variable, its evolution laws are linearized by several approximation methods, such as general midpoint rule(GMR) or general trapezoidal rule(GTR). In this investigation, semi-implicit integration schemes using GTR and GMR were developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The comparison of integration schemes was conducted on the simple tension case, and simple shear case and nonproportional loading case. The fully implicit integration(FI) was the most stable but amplified the truncation error when the nonlinearity of state variable is strong. The semi-implicit integration using GTR gave the most accurate results at tension and shear problem. The numerical solutions with refined time increment were always placed between results of GTR and those of FI. GTR integration with adjusting midpoint parameter can be recommended as the best integration method for viscoplastic equation considering nonlinear kinematic hardening.
