  • This study was carried out to develop a controlled-release insecticide formulation for the control of rose aphid (Macrosiphum ibarae) in rose and cotton aphid (Myzus persicae) in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum var. Meibung) in greenhouse. Imidacloprid[1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine] was chosen as a toxicant. Two synthetic polymers, low density polyethylene(LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA), were used as polymer matrices. The tested plastic sheet formulations were prepared by heat-aided extrusion procedures after mixing imidacloprid technical and the polymers of three different combinations, and physicochemical properties as well as efficacy of the formulations were investigated. The amounts of imidacloprid recovered and incorporated in the formulations were recorded over 90% and 80%, respectively. Release of the active ingredient from the formulations was remarkably affected by mixing rates of polymers. The active ingredient in the formulations was chemically unstable with over 10% degradation rates after 90 day storage at $50{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The residual amounts of imidacloprid in the soil treated with the formulations were paralleled with the release pattern of the formulations. Efficacy of the formulations on rose and cotton aphid was maintained over 90% even 120days after treatment under greenhouse.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate Insecticide susceptibility of the spiraea aphid (Aphis citricola) in apple orchards In Korea, using dipping method. Although insecticIde susceptibility vaned with local and seasonal populations, the susceptibility to demeLon S-rnethyl and phosphamidons was different from that Lo the other insecticides. The LCso values were 10 ppm for deltamethrin and chloropyrifos, 103 ~ 629 ppm for demeton S-methy1, acephate, phosphamidon, monocrotophos and vamldothion, 12,200 ppm for EPN, and 1,745 ppm for pirimicarb. 'When Insecticide susceptibility was compared between the S-clone selected from a population on the host plant spiraea and the R-clone selected from a population on the apple tree, the resistance ratio as expressed by RIS ratio of $LC_{50}$ was 78 for phosphamidon and 546 for pirimicarb. Esterase zymogram determined by the agar gel electrophoresIs revealed a significant difference between the clones. The activity of the E2, E5, E6 and E7 of the R-clone was higher than that of the S-clone, It is suggesLed that the Increased esterase activity may be involved in the mechanism of insecticide resistance in the spiraea aphid, although the involvement of other factor(s) may not be ruled out.

  • Tropical plants of mango(Mangefera indica), dragon fruit(Hylocereus undatus), and atemoya(Annona cherimola ${\times}$ A. squamosa) are cultivated in Jeju, Korea. A pest survey on those tropical fruits was conducted from 2008 to 2011. Major pests of Mango were thrips, aphid, mealybug, and lepidoptera species. Thrips palmi and Scirtothrips dorsalis were the most important pests in mango fields. T. palmi mainly injured the leaf but S. dorsalis injured the leaf and fruit. Lepidoptera mango pests injured leaves but some larva of Adoxophyes honmai injured fruit surface around the stem. Aphid pests, Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae, injured the shoots and Pseudococcus kraunhiae occurred on the stem and fruit. Ant species, A. gossypii, and S. litura, were important pests on dragon fruit. Ants and aphid occurred and injured the stem, flower, and fruit. Spodoptera litura larva severely injured the stem. Among the atemoya pests, S. litura and Homona magnanima caused severe damage.

  • Population of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae(Sulz.), were successively selected(up to 20th generation) in the laboratory by the insecticide oxydemeton-methyl (Metasystox-R 25Ec) and the resistance was linearly increased with the selected generations. The population developed 355.5-to 359.9-fold resistance to oxydemeton-methyl at 20th generation-selection. The population showed cross resistance to the insectides cypermethrin(770.1-to 778.5-fold), acephate(25.6-to 33.2-fold) and pirimicarb(3.4-to 3.6-fold). The different esterase isozymes were detected by the electrophoresis from the selected and non-selected strains and the band of the ${\beta}-2$ from the selected strain showed greater esterase activity than that of the non. selected strain.

  • The green peach aphid Myzus persicae(Sulzer), is known as the most important vector of potato leaf-roll virus and PVY. Yield of potato plants infested with these viruses are remarkably lower than non-infested plants. A study was conducted to investigate the life history of the green peach aphid at Suweon, Korea (Lat. $37^{\circ}$'N., Long. $126^{\circ}59$'E). The following were obtained: 1. Overwintering eggs hatched from late March to early April, with a hatching rate averaging ninety-five percent. 2. The fundatrigeniae leave the primary host(Punus persica) in early to mid May and migrate to the secondary hosts. 3. From mid to late Oct., the gymnoparae migrate from the secondary hosts to the primary hosts. 4. From early to mid Nov., gymnoparae lay fertilized eggs around buds, in bark crevices, or between bifurcated twigs of the primary hosts. 5. The early-born progeny have 23 generations and the late-born progeny have 9 generations on peach trees, potatoes and raddish from Apr. to Oct. 6. The average length of life was about 28.5 days, with a developmental period of approximate 10.8 days and a reproductive period of 15.8 days. 7. The average number of nymphs produced by a female was fifty, with a maximum number of 118. 8. The average number of nymphs produced by a female per day was about 3.2, with a maximum number of 13.

  • To investigate feeding behaviour of the greenpeach aphid (Myzus persicae) on several plants, DC electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique was used. We chose 5 plants including pepper, melon, cabbage, radish, and eggplant which were known as major host Plants of this species. This study was focused whether feeding patterns of the aphid were different and which plants would be the most preferable among 5 host plants. The time from initial proboscis contact with a each leaf until the first electrical contact, as a measure of the time taken for the stylet penetration, the time from electrical contact to the first potential drop as a time consumed until intracellular sampling, the number of potential drops per an hour during periods of regular intercellular pathway probing, and the time from electrical contact to tile first phloem specific pattern indicating the time taken to reach and attempt to feed upon the phloem were analysed. As a result, except the number of potential drop, there was no significant differency of feeding patterns among 5 plants. However, the feeding patterns related on host acceptability were observed more frequently from Pepper, radish, and e99r1an1 than melon and cabbage.

  • Occurrence pattern of major insect pests on 7 recommended potato cultivars in Korea was investigated from sowing to harvesting time at Kangneung and Daegwallyung experiment fields in 1996. Green peach aphid (Mym persicae Sulzer), potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas) and beet armyworm (Spodoptera enigua Hubner) were the major insect pests on potato leaves, and wireworm (Selatosomus puncticollis Mot.) was the major pest on tubers. There was a slight difference of average number of aphids per 50 leaves among cultivars; ranged from 22.7 on cv. Dejima to 46.3 on cv. Superior. Numbers of leaves damaged by beet armyworm larvae on cv. Shepody and cv. Jopung were 11.0 and 14.3, and these cultivars are thought to be resistant against the larvae infestation. However, degree of damage on cv. Dejima and cv. Namsuh was higher 10 times than cv. Shepody and cv. Jopung. In wireworm, the percentage of damaged tubers on cv. Irish Cobbler was lowest of 8.1%, and followed by cv. Superior, cv. Dejima, cv. Jopung, and cv. Atlantic. Whereas, those on cv. Namsuh and cv. Shepody were significantly high of 50.0% and 46.8%.

  • Adult development and fecundity of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae $S\H{u}lzer$, were studied at $15{\sim}32.5^{\circ}C$ with $60{\sim}70%$ RH under 16L:8D and the results were put together to build a life table. The longevity shortened as temperatures rose at and below $25^{\circ}C$ whereas it remained relatively constant at $27.5^{\circ}C$. Total fecundity was not significantly different at all temperatures except at $30^{\circ}C$. Daily fecundity gradually increased from $15\;to\;22.5^{\circ}C$. It was 5.1 at $25^{\circ}C$ and as temperatures either went down or up, it decreased to 2.8 at both $15^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$. Fecundity model built from total fecundity at various temperatures suggests that $18.3^{\circ}C$ was the optimum temperature for the maximum progeny of 51. Net reproduction rate RO was highest of 36.5 at $27.5^{\circ}C$. The intrinsic rate of increase per day $r_m$ and the finite rate of increase per day $\lambda$ were highest of 0.4 and 1.6, respectively and the doubling time Dt was shortest of 1.6. Constructed life table suggests that the optimum temperature for adult development for the green peach aphid was $27.5^{\circ}C$ at which the mean generation time was 8.1.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the ratio and number of the Rhus javanica gall formed by chinese sumac aphid, Scheleechtendalia chinensis, in several different conditions in which R. javanica lives. The density of 11 to 15-year-old R. javanica was more higher and the number of galls was also higher than 1 to 5- or over 16-year-old one at these sites. The formed gall according to four directions such as the East, West, South and North was founded the highest at the East and followed South, North, and West order. The formative rate of R. javanica gall did not differ in the mixture forest, and in the habitat having a heap of a little stone and mosses near a valley was better than in the site of road perimeter. Through an index of the gall diameter and the number of chinese sumac aphid, we evaluated the gall processing and development formed by the aphid. As the density of aphids increase, the size of the gall was also more plumped. The part of phyllotaxy of R. javanica gall in leaf and pinnate of was increased in the middle and upper part of terminal leaflet and leaflet was more occupied than wing. R. javanica which did not form a gall in natural environmental, formed gall by a artificial inoculation of S. chinensis. Some gall disappeared during a gall development from various environmental conditions.

  • Aphids can damage plants directly by absorbing their phloem sap and indirectly by transferring plant viruses and causing sooty mold. We compared the thermal effect on the development, survivorship, and reproduction of four cereal crop-damaging aphid species, Rhopalosiphum padi, Aulacorthum solani, Aphis craccivora, and Acyrthosiphon pisum using a life table analysis method. We investigated the stage-specific development period, survivorship, adult longevity, and fecundity of the above mentioned four aphids at 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30℃, respectively, and analyzed their life table parameters using the age-stage, two-sex life table analysis. A. solani nymphs could not complete their development to adulthood at 30℃. The intrinsic increase rate of R. padi was the highest at all tested temperatures except for that at 15℃ (0.12, 0.34, 0.47, and 0.32 at 10, 20, 25, and 30℃, respectively), and that of A. pisum displayed negative values at 30℃ (-0.04). It is speculated that R. padi would be a dominant species under high temperature conditions and A. solani is a highly adaptive species at low temperatures through the comparative analysis of the life table parameters of four aphid species damaging to cereal crops.
