This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial, antivirus properties of Saururus chinensis extracts. The n-hexane extracts from Saururus chinensis showed the active antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Saururus chiensis n-hexane extracts was 1.25 mg/ml against B. subtilis and 2.5 mg/ml against S. aureus. The cytotoxicity effects on MDBK (Madin-Darby bovine kidney) cell were observed at the various n-hexane extract concentrations. In $TCID_{50}$ assay, 0.6 mg/ml of n-hexane extracts decreased BVD (bovine viral diarrhea) virus by 1.4 log, whereas other extracts did not show antiviral activity. In this study, The results suggested that n-hexane extracts and fractions of Saururus chinensis can be a candidate materal of feed additive to chemical antibiotics and antivirus substances.
Dyeability and antimicrobial activity of Saururus chinensis on to silk and cotton fabrics has been studied. The dyestuff was extracted with distilled water. Silk fabric showed higher K/S value than cotton fabric at the same condition. And with the simmordanting by Fe, Cu gave good improvements of the K/S values. Surface color of dyed fabrics was various according to the used mordants: Cr mordanted fabric was to be cleared, Fe mordanted fabric was the greatest color difference. The fastness was significantly improved in mordanting. The Fe, Cu mordanted silk fabrics was the greatest antimicrobial activity.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of cotton and silk/rayon fabrics dyed with Saururus chinensis extract against antibiotic-resistant strains. The concentration of the concentrated dye in the Saururus chinensis extracts was 1.1% (o.w.f), and the liquor ratio was 1:10 at 30-70℃. The mordanting method was a post mordanting method. The concentration of Al2(SO4)3, CuSO4 5H2O and FeSO4 and7H2O mordant was 5% (o.w.f), and the liquor ratio was 1:40. In order to assess the antimicrobial activity of naturally dyed fabrics, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 33591, was used by incubating it in Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHA) including Oxacillin (2㎍/ml) and Fungizone (2.5㎍/ml) and Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI; Detroit, MI, USA.) The investigation of the reduction of the rate of antibiotic-resistant strains to dyed cotton fabrics and silk/rayon fabrics revealed that Cu mordanting fabric has the highest antimicrobial effects, with the rate of 99.7%, and Fe mordanting fabric has the lowest, with 77.7%. Non-mordant cotton fabrics also show a high reduction rate of strains (94.6%). In the case of dyed silk/rayon fabrics, it indicates a high reduction in the rate of strains in all fabrics with non-mordant treatment (94.2%), Al mordanting (99.6%), and Cu and Fe mordanting(99.9%).
Saururus-chinensis was used for the natural due stuff extraction and concentration to produce the condensed dye liquid. Using this liquid, the silk and the cotton fabrics were dyed. And then the K/S value, color difference were measured in order to determine the dye ability and the antimicrobial activity. The K/S values of silk were much higher than those of cotton. In terms of the silk fabric, the Al, Cr-premordanting and Fe, Cu-simmordanting method was most efficient of the mordanting method. The various suface colors on the dyed fabric were resulted according to used mordants and mordanting methods. The dye fastness was significantly improved when mordants were added. Among them, Al-mordant improved more than 1 level. The Cu, Fe-mordants showed the greatest antimicrobial activity on both of mordant treat silk and cotton.

As part of our screening of anticariogenic agents from medicinal plants, the ethanol extracts of 25 herbs widely used in the fork medicine were tested for the antimicrobial activity against a cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. The ethanol extracts of Coptis chinensis, Sophora flavescens, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Mentha arvensis, and Saururus chinensis showed antimicrobial activities against S. mutans. The extracts of Coptis chinensis and Sophora flavescens among these medicinal plants showed significant antomicrobial activity against S. mutans. These results suggested that the extracts of Coptis chinensis and Sophora flavescens could be the potential source of antimicrobial agent against S. mutans ATCC 25175.

In order to develop natural food preservatives, the ethanol and water extracts of the Saururus chinensis Baill were prepared. Antimicrobial activity was examined against 10 kinds of harmful microorganisms. The ethanol and water extracts showed the most active antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis and E. coli. The ethanol extract showed stronger antimicrobial activity than that of the water extract. However, the extracts did not show any antimicrobial activity against lactic acid bacteria and yeast. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of ethanol extracts against B. subtilis and E. coli were 5 to 10 mg/mL, respectively. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract was not destroyed at 40-12$0^{\circ}C$ and pH 3∼11. The ethanol extract was fractionated in the order of hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and water fractions. The highest antimicrobial activity was found in the diethyl ether fraction.
In this study, the functional cosmetic activity of water and ethanol extracts from Saururus chinensis by elicitor treatment are examined. Anti-oxidative activity 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and antioxidant protection factor of elicitor treated S. chinensis extract increased in concentration dependent manner as concentration increased from 1.5 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group A) to 3.0 mg elicitor/leaf 1 g (group B). Also, 70% ethanol extract showed higher anti-oxidative activity than water extract. Elicitor treated S. chinensis extract showed similar inhibitory effect on elastase activity and whitening effect indicating low effect of elicitor on elastase inhibition and whitening effect. However, it showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity compared to control group. Both group A and B showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity then control group indicating that elicitor treatment is suitable for biomass method used for industrializing useful compounds. Therefore, elicitor treatment during S. chinensis cultivation will increase bioactivity in the plant source which will yield high quality for industrialization.
In this research, botanical extracts containing green tea, Saururus chinensis and Prunus padus were tested to see possibility as shampoo. Leaves of Green tea and Saururus chinensis were extracted with hot water. Prunus padus bark extract was applied reverse osmosis and ultrasonic extraction. When interfacial tension was measured among shampoo including botanical extracts, Sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) and Quillaja Bark Saponin(QBS), that of shampoo was lower than that of SDS and QBS at lower concentration, however, it showed similar interfacial tension at 100% concentration. Shampoo showed moderate antimicrobial activity in Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Botanical extract did not indicate cell toxicity up to $350{\mu}g/ml$ concentration in MTT assay. Shampoo containing botanical extract was stable for 3 months, however, it showed considerable variation in pH and viscosity. In conclusion, shampoo containing botanical extract shows strong possibility for natural shampoo if the formulation is modified.
Seven native and four introduced herbs namely $Thymus$$quinquecostatus$, $Chrysanthemum$$zawadskii$ var. $latilobum$, $Rosmarinus$$officinalis$, etc. were selected for analysis of the DPPH radical scavenging and anti-microbial activity of their extracts. These perennial herbs are classified as $Labiatae$ and $Compositae$ except for $Saururus$$chinensis$ and can be propagated through seedling and cuttage. These edible herbs are used as medicinal as well as ornamental plants. Their extract has electron donating ability which ranges from 69.7 to 78.7% for native herbs and 67.4 to 75.4% for introduced herbs. Native herbs have higher (3.54%) average DPPH radical scavenging than introduced herbs. In native herbs, maximum DPPH radical scavenging activity was observed in $Agastache$$rugosa$ (78.7%) followed by $Saururus$$chinensis$ while $Chamaemelum$$nobile$ showed highest activity among the introduced herbs. Many herbs viz. $Saururus$$chinensis$, $Chrysanthemum$$zawadskii$ var. $latilobum$ and $Solidago$$virga-aurea$ var. $gigantean$ showed excellent anti-microbial activity against gram positive $Enterococcus$$faecalis$, maximum (80.0%) by $Saururus$$chinensis$. Other herbs viz. $Solidago$$virga-aurea$ var. $gigantea$, $Chrysanthemum$$zawadskii$ var. $latilobum$, $Salvia$Salvia $plebeia$, $Chrysanthemum$$indicum$, $Rosmarinus$$officinalis$, $Chamaemelum$$nobile$ and $Lavandula$$stoechas$ showed anti-microbial activity against gram negative $Citrobacter$$freundii$. Especially, the inhibition of colony growth of $Citrobacter$$freundii$ was highest in the extract of $Chrysanthemum$$zawadskii$ var. $latilobum$, and $Chamaemelum$$nobile$.
The purpose of the study aimed to explore the possibility for natural preservative convergence materials by examining the antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effect of 19 wild plants in Jiri Mountain. Total polyphenols were higher in the order of CS(Camellia sinensis L., 87.9 mg GAE/ g), MP(Mentha piperascens Holmes., 85.1 mg), NN(Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., 65.0 mg) and PD(Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., 52.8 mg). Total flavonoids were high in NN(25.7 mg QUE / g) and MP (25.4 mg QUE / g). CS(58.1%), NN(47.9%), and MP(40.6%) showed high ABTS radical scavenging ability and the result was similar in DPPH radical scavenging ability. The extracts of HC(Hemerocallis coreana Nakai.), PD, and CO(Cornus officinalis Siebold et Zucc.) showed the highest inhibitory effect on the growth of E. coli. The extracts of PK(Pulsatilla koreana Nakai ex Nakai.), SC(Saururus chinensis Baill.), and MC(Smilax china L.) completely inhibited the proliferation of S. aureus, showing the possibility to be developed as natural preservatives and disinfectants.
