  • An active RC 2nd order Butterworth filter suitable for a baseband channel-selection filter of a direct conversion receiver is presented. The linearity of the 2nd order Butterworth filter is analyzed. In order to improve the linearity of the filter, the operational amplifiers should have a high linear gain and low 3rd harmonic, and the filter should be designed to have large feedback factor. This second order Butterworth filter achieves-14dBV in-channel (400kHz, 500kHz) IIP3, +29dBV out-channel (10MHz, 20.2MHz) IIP3 and 15.6 $nV/\sqrt{Hz}$ input-referred noise and dissipates 10.8mW from a 2.7-V supply. The analysis and experimental results are in good agreement

  • This paper presents the experimental results of a low-power low-cost RF transceiver for the 915 MHz band IEEE 802.15.4b standard. Low power and low cost are achieved by optimizing the transceiver architecture and circuit design techniques. The proposed transceiver shares the analog baseband section for both receive and transmit modes to reduce the silicon area. The RF transceiver consumes 11.2 mA in receive mode and 22.5 mA in transmit mode under a supply voltage of 1.8 V, in which 5 mA of quadrature voltage controlled oscillator is included. The proposed transceiver is implemented in a 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process and occupies 10 $mm^2$ of silicon area.

  • A fully integrated multistandard multiband CMOS mobile TV tuner with small silicon area and low power consumption is proposed for receiving multiple mobile digital TV signals and FM signal. In order to reduce the silicon area of the multistandard multiband receiver, other RF front-end circuits except LNAs are shared and a local oscillator (LO) signal generation architecture with a single VCO for a frequency synthesizer is proposed. To reduce the low frequency noise and the power consumption, a vertical NPN BJT is used in an analog baseband circuits. The RF tuner IC is implemented in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The RF tuner IC satisfies all specifications for DVB-H/T, T-DMB, and ISDB-T with a sufficient margin and a successful demonstration has been carried out for DVB-H/T, T-DMB, and ISDB-T with a digital demodulator.

  • In this paper, we propose a transceiver for noncoherent OOK(On-Off Keying) Ultra Wide Band system based on magnitude detection. The proposed transceiver are designed using 0.18 micron CMOS technology and verified by simulation using SPICE and measurement. The proposed transceiver consist of parallelizer, Analog-to-Digital converter, clock generator, PLL and impulse generator. The time resolution of 1ns is obtained with 125MHz system clocks and 8x parallelization is carried out. The synchronized eight outputs with 2-bit resolution are delivered to the baseband. Impulse generator produces 1ns width pulse using digital CMOS gates. The simulation results and measurement show the feasibility of the proposed transceiver for UWB communication system.

  • This paper presents a 868/915 MHz CMOS RF transceiver for the ZigBee application. Using a switchless matching network, the off chip switch is removed to achieve the low cost RF transceiver, and by the elimination of the switch's insertion loss we can achieve the benefits for the RF receiver's noise figure and transmitter's power efficiency at the given output power. The receiver is composed of low-noise amplifier, mixer, and baseband analog(BBA) circuit. The transmitter is composed of BBA, mixer, and driver amplifier. And, the integer N type frequency synthesizer is designed. The proposed ZigBee RF full transceiver is implemented on the $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Measurement results show that the maximum gain and the noise figure of the receiver are 97.6 dB and 6.8 dB, respectively. The receiver consumes 32 mA in the receiver mode and the transmitter 33 mA in the transmission mode.

  • In this paper, we propose a full digital frequency and phase locked loop for CATV and HDTV receivers adopting VSB modulation. The CATV and HDTV receivers proposed by the Grand-Alliance in USA are ultilizing analog signal processing technology for carrier recovery. By the way, it is not a good architecture for the development of single chip ASIC operating in digital domain. To solve this problem while improving the performance, we first down convert the received r.f. signal to a near baseband signal for a low-rate AD converter and then we use digital signal processing techniques. The proposed system has the frequency pull-in range of -200 KHz +2.50 KHz. Moreover, it has the ability of adaptive loop bandwidth control according to the amount of frequency offset to improve the acquisition time while reducing the phase noise.

  • In the bandpass sampling(BPS), the sampling frequency for the analog-to-digital converter is lower than that of the signal to be sampled. Since the BPS operation results in the signal spectrum to be copied on the baseband, it is possible for the frequency down-converter to be conveniently omitted. The second-order BPS system is introduced in order to cancel the aliased interference components from the BPS output that may be generated by the BPS processing. In this paper, we introduce a design method for the optimal phase of the interpolant filter in the second-order BPS system which enables to maximally cancel the aliased components. Being mathematically derived, this method can always be applied independently to the spectral characteristics of the BPS input signal. The performance improvements by the suggested method has been measured statistically with various power spectra of the received signal, and it has been shown that the maximal amount of the improvements reaches up to 5~20 [dB] in comparison with the previous suboptimal algorithm.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated a receiving modem that can be applied to guided weapons can change real-time targets with little effect of fading. The designed modem consists of synchronous detector, timing error estimator, timing recovery, differential decoder and viterbi decoder, and it's implemented in FPGA so that it can be redesigned and modified according to requirements. The modem board was directly converted from IF frequency to baseband and converted into digital data through ADC. It is confirmed that it is applicable to the guided weapons that changing real-time targets through simulations, measurements and test.

  • This paper presents a fully digital gain control system with a new high bandwidth and wide dynamic range power detector for DVB-S2 application. Because the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of DVB-S2 system is so high and the settling time requirement is so stringent, the conventional closed-loop analog gain control scheme cannot be used. The digital gain control is necessary for the robust gain control and the direct digital interface with the baseband modem. Also, it has several advantages over the analog gain control in terms of the settling time and insensitivity to the process, voltage and temperature variation. In order to have a wide gain range with fine step resolution, a new AGC system is proposed. The system is composed of high-bandwidth digital VGAs, wide dynamic range power detectors with RMS detector, low power SAR type ADC, and a digital gain controller. To reduce the power consumption and chip area, only one SAR type ADC is used, and its input is time-interleaved based on four power detectors. Simulation and measurement results show that the new AGC system converges with gain error less than 0.25 dB to the desired level within $10{\mu}s$. It is implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The measurement results of the proposed IF AGC system exhibit 80-dB gain range with 0.25-dB resolution, 8 nV/$\sqrt{Hz}$ input referred noise, and 5-dBm $IIP_3$ at 60-mW power consumption. The power detector shows the 35dB dynamic range for 100 MHz input.
