PURPOSE: This study was conducted to verify the effects of a functional correction of the pain of patients with chronic low back pain(CLBP), and to examine the effect of dysfunctional factors on health-related quality of life. METHODS: A preliminary survey was first conducted on 90 patients with CLBP after functional orthodontic treatment. Some revised questionnaires were also prepared. The survey was distributed for approximately eight weeks, and 215 copies were used as the final analysis data, except for questionnaires that were inadequate, error or non-response. RESULTS: Path analysis using the structural equation model of CLBP patients showed a positive correlation between all the path coefficients and the potential factors. The multidimensional relationship between pain and dysfunction after orthognathic treatment was confirmed using three subdivisions of the pain variables as independent variables and the dysfunctional variables as the dependent variables. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the effects of pain on the dysfunction. To identify the multidimensional relationship between dysfunction and the health-related quality of life, eight sub-factors of dysfunctional variables were set as the independent variables, and multiple regression was analyses were performed with the dependent variables of the health-related quality of life. CONCLUSION: This study examined the structural and influence relationships of the functional correction with pain, dysfunction, and health-related quality of life. The results, suggest that a functional orthodontic treatment can be used as a positive program for the health-related quality of life. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it provieds useful information for intervention such as psychosocial change of patients.
Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of a teaching model to improve cultural competency (TMCC) for Korean undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest/posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted with a convenience sample of 168 undergraduate nursing students in South Korea. The experimental group of 121 seniors was taught a 13-week teaching model in order to improve cultural competence. A control group with 47 junior students underwent nursing major courses, but did not take this teaching model. Before and after the program, students' level of cultural competency was measured using the Questionnaire for Cultural Competence (QCC) consisting of three sub-scales: "awareness and desire," "encounter," and "nursing skill and knowledge." Results: After the experiment, the experimental group showed significantly higher improvement in the Questionnaire for Cultural Competence in the three sub-scales of "awareness and desire," "encounter," and "nursing skill and knowledge" than the control group (p=<.050). Conclusion: A teaching model to improve cultural competence was effective in improving Korean undergraduate nursing students' cultural competency. Further studies need to be repeated in order to identify the effectiveness of the teaching model to improve cultural competency with graduate or clinical nurses.
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of spouses participating in health coaching on stage of the change, health behaviors, and physiological indicators among male office workers with cardiocerebrovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and compare the findings with trainers who provided health coaching only to workers. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was used. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from a manufacturing research and development company in the city of Gyeonggi province. The health coaching program for the experimental group (n=26) included individual counseling sessions according to workers' stage of change, and provision of customized health information materials on CVD prevention to workers and their spouses for 12 weeks through mobile phone and email. Results: After 12 weeks of intervention, the total score for health behavior, and scores on the sub-areas of exercise and health checkups significantly improved in the experimental group, but there were no significant differences in the scores of stage of the change and physical indicators. The results of a paired t-test showed a significant decrease in the body mass index, abdominal circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglyceride values, and a significant increase in the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol value in the experimental group after the intervention. Conclusion: To improve the health of male workers with CVD risk factors in the workplace, sharing health information with their spouses has proven to be more effective than health coaching for only workers. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies to encourage spousal participation when planning workplace health education for changing health-related behaviors.
Objective : The main purpose of this study is to find a reasonable solutions for utilization of herbal formulas based on the medical classics. Methods : We used official Ten 'Selected Korean Medical Classics(SKMC)'. For input of formulas from SKMC, we had to select proper editions of them. After consultations with experts of 'The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula Study' and 'Korean Society of Medical History', we chose the proper editions of SKMC, and according to those books, we built formulas database using microsoft office excel sheets, respectively. Results : After whole input procedures, we requested several experts to inspect the results and also, to correct errors in them. Input categories were name of formula, name of classic, classification, original source, composition herb, weight, unit of weight, weight conversion index, converted weight, basic formula, indications, reason for modification, preparing method, taking method and contraindications. Final number of whole formulas in DB was 32,882. Conclusions : We used SKMC and built database using excel program. Through this procedure, we can provide a developmental ways to make a foundation for herbal formulas from the medical classics, so that we can make herbal formulas be standardized or industrialized more efficiently.
Purpose: Previous studies have reported that action observation training has beneficial effects on enhancing the motor task, such as balance and gait functions. On the other hand, there have been few studies combined with action observation training and auditory feedback. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of action observation training with auditory feedback on the gait function in stroke patients with hemiparesis Methods: A total of 24 inpatients with post-stroke hemiparesis were assigned randomly to either an experimental group 1 (EG 1, n=8), experiment group 2 (EG 2, n=8), control group (CG, n=8, EG 1). The EG 2 and CG watched video clip demonstrating three functional walking tasks with auditory feedback, without auditory feedback, and showing a landscape image, respectively. The exercise program consisted of 30 minutes, five times a week, for four weeks. The participants were measured to 10MWT (10 m walk test), 6MWT (6 minutes walking distance test), TUG (timed up and go test), DGI (dynamic gait index), time and steps of F8WT (figure-of-8 walk test). Results: In the intra-group comparison after the intervention, EG 1 and EG 2 showed a significantly different gait function (10MWT, 6MWT, DGI, TUG, F8WT) (p<0.05). In the inter-group comparison after intervention, EG 1 showed significant improvements in the entire gait parameters and EG 2 only showed significant improvement in DGI and TUG compared to CG (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings show that action observation training with auditory feedback may be used beneficially for improving the gait function of stroke patients with hemiparesis.
PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the effect of patient-selected, task-oriented training on activities of daily living, quality of life, and depression for stroke patients. METHODS: This study included 40 stroke subjects, randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. Both the experimental group and the control group included 20 stroke patients. Patients from the experimental group selected and performed task-oriented training. In the exercise program, the patient chose two categories from six categories and trained for 30 minutes a day, three times a week, for four weeks. Patients from the control group performed conventional task-oriented training. Outcomes were measured using the Korean version of a modified Barthel Index (K-MBI), the Korean Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (K-IADL), the Stroke-specific Quality of Life (SS-QOL), the Short Form 8 (SF-8), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), both before and after training. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the before- and after-intervention data of the K-MBI and the K-IADL (p<.05) for both groups. Also, there were more significant improvements in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<.05) for the SS-QOL, SF-8 and BDI. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that patients-selected, task-oriented training had positive effects on stroke patients' activities of daily living, quality of life, and depression.
Background: Neck pain is a major health problem in developed countries and has a lifetime prevalence of 50%. Major problems include a reduced cervical range of motion, muscle stiffness, dysfunction, postural changes, and decrease in psychosocial level. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the effects of applying the upper trapezius inhibition dynamic taping to patients with chronic neck pain on their neck pain, functional level, cervical range of motion, psychosocial level, and neck posture. Methods: The study design was a randomized controlled trial. A total of 40 patients with neck pain participated in this study and were randomly assigned to a Dynamic Taping group (n = 20) or Sham Taping group (n = 20). In both groups, basic intervention cervical pain control therapy and shoulder stabilization exercise program were performed. In addition, dynamic taping and sham taping were applied to participants in the Dynamic Taping and Sham Taping groups to inhibit the trapezius muscle, respectively. Childhood obesity causes a higher risk of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. In addition, obese children experience an increased risk of respiratory problems, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects. This study aimed to investigate how an exercise intervention affects health-related physical fitness and inflammatory-related blood factors in obese children after. We hypothesized that there would be positive effects on serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), connecting peptide(C-peptide) and resistin, as well as in muscle and cardiovascular-related physical capacities, after an exercise intervention in obese children. Thirty-seven obese children haveperformed health-related fitness tests and provided blood samples for the analysis of changes in circulating biomarkers, both before and after an 8-week exercise intervention, which includes stretching, aerobic exercise, resistance exercise and sports games. The results indicate that exercise training beneficially affects body compositions, especially percentage body fat and muscle mass, without influencing to body weight and height. The results of the physical fitness tests show that muscle and cardiovascular capacity were increased in obese children in response to exercise training. Simultaneously, the exercise training decreased circulating levels of C-peptide, which equated to a "large" effect size. Although there were no significant effects on the levels of IGF-1 and resistin, they show a "small" effect size. Therefore, our findings suggest that the exercise intervention have beneficial effects on body composition and physical fitness levels in obese children, whichmight be associated with the decline in circulating C-peptide.
Purpose: The study was to examine the effects of the individual education about chemotherapy for cancer patients as well as their family who are receiving the first chemotherapy on self-care knowledge, self-care performance, family support, and anxiety level. Methods: A non-equivalent control group was used in this interventional study.
