This paper deals with a theoretical method to calculate natural frequencies of a fixed-free rectangular tank partially in contact with an outer water gap. Orthogonal polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions of the tank are used as admissible functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz method. A quarter model of the liquid-coupled system is constructed and it is simplified to a line supported flat plate in contact with the liquid. The liquid displacement potential functions satisfying the Laplace equation and water boundary conditions are derived, and the finite Fourier transform is accomplished in conjunction with the compatibility requirement along the contacting interfaces between the tank and water. An eigenvalue problem is derived so that the natural frequencies of the wet rectangular tank can be extracted. The predictions from the proposed analytical method show good agreement with the finite element analysis results.
We investigated complex damped modes in beams in the presence of a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between two elastic layers. The problem was solved using two approaches, (1) Rayleigh beam theory and analyzed using the Ritz method, and (2) by using 2D plane stress elasticity based finite-element method. The damping in the layers was modeled using the complex modulus. Simply-supported, cantilever, and viscously supported boundary conditions were considered in this study. Simple trigonometric functions were used as admissible functions in the Ritz method. The key idea behind sandwich structure is to increase damping in a beam as affected by the presence of a highly-damped core layer vibrating mainly in shear. Different assumptions are utilized in the literature, to model shear deformation in the core layer. In this manuscript, we used FEM without any kinematic assumptions for the transverse shear in both the core and elastic layers. Moreover, numerical examples were studied, where the base and constraining layers were also damped. The loss factor was calculated by modal strain energy method, and by solving a complex eigenvalue problem. The efficiency of the modal strain energy method was tested for different loss factors in the core layer. Complex mode shapes of the beam were also examined in the study, and a comparison was made between viscoelastically and viscously damped structures. The numerical results were compared with those available in the literature, and the results were found to be satisfactory.
Underground tunnelling is one of the sustainable construction methods which can facilitate the increasing passenger transportation in the urban areas and benefit the community in the long term. Tunnelling in various ground conditions requires careful consideration of the stability factor. This paper investigates three dimensional stability of a shallow circular tunnel in a layered soil. Upper bound theorem of limit analysis was utilised to solve the tunnel face stability problem. A three dimensional kinematic admissible failure mechanism was improved to model a layered soil and limiting assumptions of the previous studies were resolved. The study includes calculation of the minimum support pressure acting on the face of the excavation in closed-face excavations. The effects of the characteristics of the layers on the minimum support pressure were examined. It was found that the ratio of the thickness of cover layers particularly when a weak layer is overlying a stronger layer, has the most significant influence on the minimum tunnel support pressure. Comparisons have been made with the results of the numerical modelling using FLAC3D software. Results of the current study were in a remarkable agreement with those of numerical modelling.
In this paper, new three-dimensional vibration data for the solid cylinders of the N-sided polygonal cross-section with V-notches or sharp cracks are presented, and a Ritz procedure is employed, which incorporates a mathematically complete set of algebraic-trigonometric polynomials in conjunction with an admissible set of edge functions that explicitly model the tri-axial stress singularities that exist along a terminus edge of the V-notch. Convergence studies demonstrate the necessity of adding the edge functions to achieve the accurate frequencies and mode shapes of N-sided polygonal cylindrical solids with stress singularities.

Forging of internal involute gears with alloy steel has been analyzed by means of upper bound method. Kinematically admissible velocity fields for forging of internal gear were proposed. It was assumed that the shape of free flow surface during forging operation is a straight line perpendicular to the plane of symmetry. Using the suggested velocity fields, forging loads and relative pressures were calculated by numerical method. Consequently forging die should be successfully designed without fracture or failure during forging operation. Experiments were carried out with the designed die and SCM415 alloy steel as billet material. The calculated loads were compared with experimental one and they are in good agreement with experimental inspections. As a result, the calculated solutions would be useful to predict the loads and the designed die is suitable for forging of internal involute spur gear with alloy steel. The forged gear is measured to be KS 4 class and its class should be improved by subsequent working such as shaving after forging operation.
A matched asymptotic analysis is conducted for a compressible rotating flow in a cylindrical container when a mechanical and/or a thermal disturbance is imposed on the wall. The system Ekman number is assumed to be very small. The conditions for the Taylor-Proudman column in the interior, which were also given in the companion paper Park & Hyun, 2002) by means of the energy balancing analysis, have been re-derived. The concept of the variable, the energy content $e[{\equiv}T+2 {\alpha}^2 {\gamma}{\nu}]$, is reformulated, and its effectiveness in characterizing the energy transport mechanism is delineated. It is seen that, under the condition of the Taylor-Proudman column, numerous admissible theoretical solutions for interior flow exist with an associated wail boundary condition. Some canonical examples are illustrated with comprehensive physical descriptions. The differential heating problem on the top and bottom endwall disks is revisited by using the concept of the energy content. The results are shown to be in line with the previous findings.

Pipe expansion involves various methods to enlarge the diameter of the pipes with the use of a mandrel or punch placed inside the pipe. In this study, the upper bound method was used to analyze the pipe expanding process as well as design a die. A kinematically admissible velocity field was derived for the upper bound analysis with the occurrence of pipe thinning during the expansion factored in. The analysis confirms that a semi-cone angle of the punch between 15ween pip is most advantageous for pipe expansion. The results of the upper bound analysis, which were also consistent with those of the FEM, can be useful for the design of a pipe expansion die.
A minimum-time trajectory planning for two robot arms with designated paths and coordination is proposed. The problem considered in this paper is a subproblem of hierarchically decomposed trajectory planning approach for multiple robots : i) path planning, ii) coordination planning, iii) velocity planning. In coordination planning stage, coordination space, a specific form of configuration space, is constructed to determine collision region and collision-free region, and a collision-free coordination curve (CFCC) passing collision-free region is selected. In velocity planning stage, normal dynamic equations of the robots, described by joint angles, velocities and accelerations, are converted into simpler forms which are described by traveling distance along collision-free coordination curve. By utilizing maximum allowable torques and joint velocity limits, admissible range of velocity and acceleration along CFCC is derived, and a minimum-time velocity planning is calculated in phase plane. Also the planning algorithm itself is converted to simple numerical iterative calculation form based on the concept of neural optimization network, which gives a feasible approximate solution to this planning problem. To show the usefulness of proposed method, an example of trajectory planning for 2 SCARA type robots in common workspace is illustrated.
Purpose: Given the mixture components - process variables experimental data, we propose the strategy to find the proper combined model. Methods: Process variables are factors in an experiment that are not mixture components but could affect the blending properties of the mixture ingredients. For example, the effectiveness of an etching solution which is measured as an etch rate is not only a function of the proportions of the three acids that are combined to form the mixture, but also depends on the temperature of the solution and the agitation rate. Efficient designs for the mixture components - process variables experiments depend on the mixture components - process variables model which is called a combined model. We often use the product model between the canonical polynomial model for the mixture and process variables model as a combined model. Results: First we choose the reasonable starting models among the class of admissible product models and practical combined models suggested by Lim(2011) based on the model selection criteria and then, search for candidate models which are subset models of the starting model by the sequential variables selection method or all possible regressions procedure. Conclusion: Good candidate models are screened by the evaluation of model selection criteria and checking the residual plots for the validity of the model assumption. The strategy to find the proper combined model is illustrated with examples in this paper.

This paper presents not only the robust stabilization technique but also robust non-fragile controller design method for discrete-time singular systems and static state feedback controller with multiplicative uncertainty. The condition for the existence of robust stabilization controller, the admissible controller design method, and the measure of non-fragility in controller are proposed via LMI(linear matrix inequality) approach. In order to get the maximum measure of non-fragility, the obtained sufficient condition can be rewritten as LMI optimization form in terms of transformed variable. Therefore, the presented robust non-fragile controller for discrete-time singular systems guarantees robust stability in spite of parameter uncertainty and controller fragility. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the validity of the design method.
