  • Gray mold severely occurred up to 50% in freesia and gladiolus grown in the fields and greenhouses in Korea from 1998 to 2000. Symptoms appeared as spot and blight on loaves and flowers of infected plants. A total of 25 isolates was obtained from infected plant parts. All the isolates were identified as Botrytis gladiolorum based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Gray mold symptoms similar to those observed in the fields and greenhouses were induced on the plants of freesia and gladiolus by artificial inoculation with four isolates of the fungus. This is the first report of gray mold of freesia caused by B. gladiolorum in Korea.

  • Aloe, being used widely as a health food and also as a traditional folk remedy for burns and constipation, contains quinone derivatives particularly in its skin. Thus, we have investigated the effect of extracts of Aloe in ethanol metabolism. The dried powder of water extract of skinned Aloe (300 mg/kg body weight given to rats by oral adminstration at 30 min prior to oral adminstration of ethanol given at a does of 4 gm/kg) and the freeze-dried Aloe gel commercial product (600 mg/kg) which was prepared after selective elimination of quinones were found not to increase the ethanol metabolism rate in vivo. This result suggested that quinones, missing from the above preparations, might be responsible for enhancing ethanol metabolism rate.

  • This research aims to compare between regression and neural network in terms of the predictive ability of the overhead costs in hospitals. For this purpose, this research uses the number of out-patients and complex medical treatments as explaining variables. Thirty-one hospitals were used for the empirical test The test result shows that the regression model has a more predictive ability than the neural network.

  • Recently, CMM have been recognized as a critical factor to validate the competitiveness of software organizations, even if the organizations have already achieved the ISO9001 certification. Furthermore, the new version of ISO9001:2000 is being required instead of ISO9001:1994. Both CMM and ISO9001 have a common point 1ha t they pursuit quality improvement fur the organizations processes and products. Therefore, it is important to understand the similarities of specific requirements between the two models in software organizations which attempt to employ both of the models. from this background, this paper compares CMM and ISO9001 by considering the versions in 1994 and 2000 of ISO9001. The results of this research are likely to help software organizations make a decision for a strategy to adopt CMM and ISO9001.
